Basically all of this is on hold until our targets start losing in the NCAA tourney. Any announcement before the 18th of March or so is very unlikely so sit back and enjoy watching other teams be good this year.

i agree to an extent. and i'm not saying that PP and Rivals guys saying that Marshall's price tag is gonna be too high is gospel at all. they could be wrong, i'm not trying to stick up for them necessarily. but i also think that type of information is something that could be true at this stage. what i mean is, that is some information that our search team could have found out through his agent. yes, we won't get into the process of hiring a coach this early...but we can see if potential candidates may or may not have any interest as well or what their price tag is.

I agree that nobody knows shit right now but realistically speaking, I think it comes down to Keats, Wade, and Holtmann. Here's a quick comparison.

Chris Holtmann would be a solid hire in my opinion. Someone who wont command a ton of money but has coaching fundamentals to take talent to the next level. Consider what he is doing with Butler right now in that conference.

Those three on that list in that order are probably our best options outside of Archie that are realistic. We should be happy with Holtmann or Wade the problem will be if we get passed on by those guys.

outside of Archie...who else is on your realistic list? Wade and Holtmann (Keatts to a lesser extent, I think, but you can include him too) are gonna be on most P5 schools "wish lists" that have openings this year.

I don't think anyone would be too upset with landing any of those first 3. Keatts I think is a little more polarizing since he's similar to Gott(offense + recruiting), but I think he still has enough upside to please most.

Archie > Wade > Holtzman > Moton > Keatts

We've done the Keatts thing before, his name was Gottfried. Offense and recruiting with no defense doesn't work in the NCAAs. Defense wins period.

Wade IMO would be a triple if Archie is considered a homerun. Obviously if Marshall was in play, I'd have him equal/above Archie.

I would not be sad about Holtzman either. He's a strong candidate. If we get to Keatts/Moton/someone else, I might be boycott da school although I think Moton could be a steal as he's a Raleigh guy and could be an elite recruiter at a P5 school.

I truly feel better about this search than the last two when we went for huge names that were all low probabilities.

I don't think Archie is in play but we hang onto the idea idea that he is because he's an alum, but it doesn't make sense for him for a variety of reasons. I hope I'm wrong - would love to have him.

Wade is best case scenario now, and to be honest, I had him over Archie on my personal big Board.

Right now he is the favorite to get this job. Don't hold your breath for Archie, that ship has sailed.

i realize Keatts teams have ranked poorly defensively. i haven't watched any UNCW basketball, so i'm just looking at their roster here...their tallest player is 6'9", but he only gets 8 mins/game. of their guys getting regular minutes, their lineup is pretty small...only one guy at 6'7" is getting significant minutes. everybody else is guard size. i would guess that impacts their defensive stats.

it does look like UNCW does a decent job of forcing turnovers (14+ per game, 63rd in the nation)...that number is slightly better when viewed as turnovers per possession (56th in the nation). now, those are solid numbers, but certainly not great. they are a hell of a lot higher than State, though. we are 322nd in turnovers forced per possession.

i'm just looking at these stats to try to provide some context for myself...i don't really have a strong opinion on Keatts, i haven't seen UNCW play, and UNCW's poor defensive rankings certainly give me pause. maybe there's somebody a little more familiar with UNCW that can provide better context about their poor defensive numbers.

i disagree with this being the assessment of Gott. Gott had talent...he did a great job getting talent here. but he did a poor job assembling a team and he did a poor job of roster management. and we had plenty of talent...but the rosters weren't always built for success. while the talent was there, his roster management was totally unsustainable and caught up to him.

as for his offense....the last few years have been give TJ/Lacey/Cat/DSJ the ball and let them go for 20+ ppg and we've basically abandoned the UCLA offense he wants to run. i think you can win big with great recruiting and great offense (don't get me wrong, i wanna be good defensively). but that wasn't exactly what Gott was. we have no offensive identity aside from 1 on 1 shit with DSJ and 3PT shots and we have a mashed up roster every year of last second recruits and transfers in and out of the program.

Yeah you need to be able to score at any level of basketball. The thing on defense is you don't have to be good, you just can't be terrible. You might be able to win any individual game with at top 10 defense but you need some offense to win too. Ideally you are a top 30 program in both. I don't think you can do great ignoring one or the other.There are a couple of exceptions though and there isn't enough correlation to assume a trend from past results with offense or defense being hugely determining. Best bet is to be top 30 in both.

I will say I feel like your UVAs and Wisconsin that play "defense" and pace flame out way more in the tourney.

Gott was never a good offensive coach. He was a great recruiter of outstanding offensive players (TJ/Lacey/Cat/DSJ).

Between the three I listed, Wade is my favorite and I also think he's definitely attainable. Besides just his numbers, I think his attitude/style is right and he would just be a good overall fit here.

Holtman would probably be pretty solid and would make me feel like we had other options but took him. While I'd certainly be optimistic/happy with Keats, it would also indicate to me that we blew some area of the search. Moton coached at my high school and I'd be happy for him personally to get the job, but I'd also feel like we really fucking shit the bed in this search and would be praying to the ghost of V that it somehow works out.

If you include Gregg or Archie in the realistic list, I'd take them above Wade in that order.
