You know, sometimes you take a photo and it's ok not to do anything with it. You don't even have to delete it, but why you would take the time to edit, upload, and post half this shit is beyond me.

I don't know much about jewelery work, but I can tell you to search for "small object lighting" and pretty sure you can come up with a good variety of books. A nice macro lens is a must and shoot at narrow aperture since the closer the object is to the lens, the narrower the DOF will be. Product photography is the hardest area to master because if you are not good with understanding the fundamentals, understand how light works then just pay someone to do it. It's a lot of technical skill to learn and understand, specially when lighting shiny small objects.

she's paying me to learn, so I'll see what happens i guess, i found a few good books on amazon. now i have to talk her in to buying them. i think she understands that the better my pictures are the more she will sell, so hopefully she will be willing to buy the things i need.

BAM I just saved you hundreds of dollars on books!

I made one with a box I got from the Wine Source, 2 or three sheets of poster-sized tracing paper, one sheet of poster paper and some masking tape. I don't have a flash so I used some work lights. I put the camera on a tripod, the box and subject on a table, the lights around the box. I should have taken a picture of the setup, but I took a bunch of pictures of ebay things and flowers and stuff and I learned at least as much doing it as I would have from a book.

One thing to note is that reflective surfaces can show reflections of the inside of the box, so you either need to get very anal about its construction or buy one of the ones that really is made for this.

another thing I learned: shooting on a mirror sucks because you get a double reflection, so either get a special front surface mirror or get something with a glossy surface, apparently there is tile at Home Depot that is reflective on the top surface.

This morning in class, a student asked how she can become one of the top photographers in the world. This is how the conversation went.

Teacher "well, you have to work hard at it".
She responds "but how exactly?".
"Well, you just work constantly everyday, on projects you enjoy and you end up getting noticed by your work."
"What work should I focus on to get noticed faster?"
"Most of these photographers that we have been talking about sacrifice a lot to be in the top 1%, mostly in their personal lives..."
"I could sacrifice that!".

I made the biggest carlface palm slap to my head when I heard that. Some people... She reminded me of Kiwi, probably worse than Kiwi, but at least her pictures are at least somewhat decent. She has no passion, just greed... I don't think she'll last. I call it now.

no, but she is a blonde. It just hurts when she talks. She even emailed me earlier this week trying to give me pointers on how to build a website... yeah... um ok, I'm fairly certain she doesn't have an intel 8008 processor stashed in her attic.

and for the record, my website sucks ass. Spending 10 mins to develop it and never looked back. Once I get more time, I'll devote to it, but I only work on sites that I get money from.

alright, i need to buy a UV filter for my new 28-135mm IS USM. i really only use these filters as protection, as i guess most people do...so i'm wondering what the difference is between the cheaper ones and the more expensive ones. are there clarity issues with UV filters?

^^i'm guessing she's going for shift-lens effect

thats pretty popular right now

especially among people who are taking what they think are "good" photos for the first time and get most of their influences from other internet photographers who don't have anyone with experience critiquing their photographs

They Hoya HMC UVs are supposed to be a good bang for the buck.

But i'm growing skeptical of their need. Part of me wants to take all my UVs off and let the lenses "breath". Not like any of my lenses are worth a shit anyway. thoughts?

I shot a cheer competition Saturday and I just feel dirty taking pictures at the event. Too much jailbait going on there plus 99% of the dance routines is what I seen in the nightclubs... parenting fail.

I had to rotate it like .75 degrees CCW I think, and crop a tad bit, ha. first time i've used the grid in PS that I can remember. it is handy.

thanks

haha, I should find the one cheerleader that was playing with a teddy bear. She threw it up and when I took the pic, it look like it was attacking her face... pedobear style... lol

I didn't have this kind of weirdness factor when I covered some women's volleyball...

was middle & highschool volleyball. I guess it wasn't as weird because they weren't dancing provocatively or stretching their legs into odd angles. Plus (no pedo) the cheerleaders had interesting panties on...
