I've never owned a handgun.

Tell me why I shouldn't go out and buy a subcompact.

probably because you don't have a purchase permit for one. go get a permit first

don't buy a subcompact unless you plan on getting your CHP

cause without a CHP, all you can do is either open carry or shoot it at the range. a full size will be more fun (higher capacity) and more accurate at the range and the small size of the subcompact is not necessary for OC. if you want home defense, get a shotgun.

[Edited on July 31, 2011 at 8:33 PM. Reason : subcompact is for CC and nothing else imo]

Because recoil, blast, and noise will all be much worse. The small grips and short sight radius will also take some getting used to. Lighter guns can't dampen your fine movements like a larger gun will, so you have to be more steady to hold it on target. Bigger guns are easier to shoot, period (excluding ones that are too heavy to hold steady).

I think these tiny little back-ups that guys are carrying are just odd choices. Maybe they really like pocket carry.

I'm 5'10'' and 162" and my CC is a Glock 17. I don't wear a vest or any stupid shit like that either.

I just went from a XD 4" to a XD sub compact (both 9mm) and accuracy is a non issue. I think i am shooting better at 5 - 10 yard ranges. I actually enjoy the subcompact just as much. AND i taught my girlfriend to shoot on the sub compact and she was hitting 10's and bullseye consistently at 5 and 7 yards. Her first time ever shooting and nervous as hell.

I dont believe this has been covered quite yet, so, I have a question for everyone. Im looking for some new hearing protection and have narrowed it down to:

(1) Pelotor: http://www.amazon.com/Peltor-97010-Ultimate-10-Hearing-Protector/dp/B000PW98WO/ref=sr_1_1?s=hi&ie=UTF8&qid=1312243130&sr=1-1
(2) HL: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001DZX86O/ref=cm_cr_asin_lnk

My buddy has the Pelotors, which are great with respect to sound protection, but theyre just so huge (my head literally doubles, or more than doubles, in width. Im concerned that these would get in the way with rifles (which my friend does not shoot). So, the HLs *look* thinner, and appear to offer the same protection, but I cant tell how big they are. Everyone, ideas? Low profile alternatives under around 50 bucks?

^^ Dumb question -- when the batteries run out, I presume you lose the lower db conversations, not lose the higher db protection? Im just concerned they would run out mid-session and I would have reduced protection.

Gun show this weekend! Who all is going? I need to pick up some more reload items (powder and primers)... I may be tempted in finally throwing down some $$$ for a Kel-tec Sub-2k in Glock 40... we'll see.

From page 110 the Hi-Point was awful. Hated it. I ended up getting rid of it for a Kel-Tec SU-16. It came with a bunch of tactical goodies which is right up my alley. I didn't realize .223 ammo was so cheap.

i want to buy a single action revolver.

mostly for plinking, so 22lr isnt out of the question.

been looking mostly at rugers and ubertis.

i have a ton of 30 carbine laying around and found ruger makes a blackhawk in this caliber. seems odd but think it would be a fun way to shoot through all of it. i dont find my actual m1 that much fun to shoot.

but also considering the 357 / 9mm convertible (damn what a flexible gun) and possibly a 357 vaquero.

i like bisley grips A LOT dunno why. my friend has a ruger super blackhawk hunter in 45lc with those grips and its just so comfortable to shoot (even with buffalo bore loads). also, you dont see them everyday.

anyway, anyone have any amazing info to help me decide? how much should you pay for 7 boxes of 50 whitebox remington in 30 carbine? someone locally is selling it on carolinashootersforum and i personally think $155 is too much. all i have is surplus though, so who knows.

thanks!

^^I bought a Heritage .22/.22WM single-action. It was cheap, and it's fun. My only complaint is the plastic piece on the ejector rod is kinda sharp.

Didn't really see anything too good at the gun show. I was specifically looking for an M&P 15-22 MOE in FDE - unfortunately didn't even find an MOE version, let alone FDE

Saw a bunch of M1As that I wish I could afford. One day...

i inherited a 1911 that's mechanically sound but the stainless is pretty scratched and scuffed up.

what can i do to fix this without spending too much? or who can fix it, rather.

thanks in advance!

Wha kind of finish is the stainless? Brushed, bead blasted, satin, polished?

Bare metals are easy to fix but only if you have the tools to match the original finish.
If it's satin or brushed then you can redo the entire surface to a satin finish using wet/dry sandpaper in progressively finer grits (400-1000). I actually just refinished my wife's titanium engagement and wedding rings to 1000 grit with a very light polishing on top. Just keep all your lines straight. Many guys like the green scotch brite finish. It's easy to do and you always know where to get the same kind of pad in the future.
If it's a bead blasted finish you'll have to find someone with a sandblasted and glass. If it's polished then that's about as easy as it gets to fix. Just buy a tube of flitz.

Went to the gunshow today.

I'm still a CC newb, but held the 442 and the LCR today and must say the 442 felt much better. I think I'm going to go with it when I get my CC permit in a month or so. The price from most places for a new 442 was 380-400. That sound about right?

^^, ^^^ me too - I find it to be superior to the LCR and LCP... you'll also find that it is easier to hold onto the gun when firing

I also like the idea of "pull the trigger and gun goes bang" - a revolver jam is muuuuch much much more uncommon than a semi jam (you got something pretty messed up with your gun if that happens). And that is the whole reason for the pocket pistol in my opinion - If you need it, you reeeaaaally need it not to malfunction and go bang. Not saying that the LCP is in any way unreliable- I just prefer the peace of mind in addition to the fact that the 442 is easier to hold onto. As for the LCR- it feels good, but not as good as the S&W, which just feels a little beefier (in size of the handle, not weight) than the ruger. I haven't fired the LCR though (well I did dry fire to test out the supposedly amazing trigger pull, but was not overly impressed)

yes, in the handle- as a guy with big hands, these micro guns in 38sp pose a problem when firing. something with a fuller handle (read: beefier) is going to be easy to hold on to...

or are you commenting on me calling the "grip" the "handle?"

Just took Rush's class, and now I'm going through a huge range of theories when it comes to how I want to carry. I'm a bigger guy so I can conceal a compact with ease, but I definitely want something big enough that I can 4-finger.

Anyway, my actual quesion is -- where on your person do you carry and why?

^^I used to pocket carry my LCP, but have since upgraded to a Kahr CW9. I dont have a holster for it yet, I've been just putting it inside the waistband at the 4:00 position. It does not print, it stays put, does not stab my side and does not feel uncomforatable when I sit in the car or equipment.

pending receipt of my permit, I'll have a G26 around 4:00 in some kind of hybrid holster. still havent decided which one...

anybody heard of white hat holsters? basically a cheaper CBST with no crosses on the clips. its probably going to be either that, or the MTAC

as for why, I'm not comfortable enough (yet) with drawing the firearm to have it pointing at my gentleman's area/femoral artery (a la appendix carry). but perhaps one day
