"True. The iPhone really needs push like the BB but until then sending a picture via text is a little more immediate. Also people are more likely to check a text than an email. I wish AT&T would atleast give you the text or notify you you were getting a MMS. My friend had been sending me MMSs for over a month until he realized iPhones couldn't get them."

I've been getting MMS on the iPhone since day 1. I just can't send any. Not sure whats going on with your friends carrier but its supposed to generate a txt with a url, username, password so you can view the MMS from a browser.

Also you guys are under the assumption that everyone can check email on their phones which isn't the case. Which is why txt/MMS is practical.

the url/password thing is fucking bullshit and very poorly executed. how hard is it to make a link that has the password/username integrated into the link so you can just touch it and be taken tot the link? having to type that shit in is stupid, esp on a phone.

i've gotten those from day one as well and it's easy enough to send them by sending the picture via email to phone#@mm.att.net or whatever the address is. its just that i shouldn't HAVE to do that.

I wasn't implying it was good...just pointing out that there isn't a reason why they weren't getting MMS on their iPhone if their friend has been sending them for months.

but yeah...it is shit and very poorly implemented.

everyone should list all the apps they've downloaded, i'm intrigued as to the contents of you people's phones "

The BB gmail push works a lot better than the crappy iPhone "gpush" app.

Both my friend on AT&T and my girlfriend on verizon have sent me MMSs and i've never gotten anything on my iPhone before. I wonder what the deal is.

i'm talking about exchange push. it works perfectly, and it truly is push - i get the new email notification on my phone at almost exactly the same time as i do from outlook on my desktop.

seriously. it scared me how much i had spent/downloaded.

but if you really want to... i basically just wrote some regex stuff to gather all the titles from the receipts that apple sends you via email whenever you buy something from the itunes store since they were just sitting in my gmail account anyway. apple does provide a mechanism for a personal RSS feed showing the last 20 (25?) apps you've purchased, but that's as far as it goes back.

eh.. it's close enough. and i wouldn't say "most" people use gmail. i have a copy of all my mail forwarded to gmail but use exchange most of the time. plenty of other people that have big boy/girl jobs do the same.

and evan... $202.51 in apps? haha

it is usually VERY slow for me when I get them..but I have always (at least as far as i'm aware of) gotten that text with the login info to my MMS message. if you aren't then there's something wrong with your account I'd guess.. call at&t

Are you saying that you're forwarding your work mail to gmail? I hope not...

Also, if you're forwarding your personal mail to gmail, you might as well just have your friends use your gmail account - that way you can switch jobs, ISPs, or domain names without concern.

Not sure what "big boy/girl jobs" has to do with gmail

Why would someone with a "big boy/girl job" use their work account for personal email? Sounds like a recipe for disaster

also sounds like a total n00b thing to do

mainly because my family owns where i work.. so it doesn't really matter.

and i was more or less kidding about the big boys/girls thing but you guys gotta get alll pissy. i agree the whole google push thing would be pretty cool/nice to have. although not really a huge deal since it updates pretty quick anyways if you change it to check every 15 mins.

I have push both for my work email (Exchange) and my personal email (mobileme)...works great. I've been really disappointed in gmail and its performance (web) which is why i started using my mobileme account as my main personal account.

I don't use the web interface for mobileme...just phone and postbox on the computer.

I've had so much trouble with gmail downloading to any mail client and even to my phone. and I try to avoid using the web UI because every time I do it times out on everything. I guess its ok though because its still 'beta'... #googlefail

Yeah gmail is really fast and responsive. Never timed out on me. Works great with any email client and the iPhone. Aside from no native push on iPhone it's great. Great options and lab features.

I've had gmail since the beginning and I feel like performance has gone downhill.

^ and ^^ you must not have been trying to access gmail on the days its been down. because even google admits to it being down.

You have a computer from the 90's?

http://www.slate.com/id/2227215/

Quote :
"In a blog post last year, Matthew Glotzbach, a product manager in Google's enterprise software division, reported that Gmail had been down, on average, about 10 to 15 minutes per month over the previous year. As he pointed out, that's an extremely good record. All e-mail systems suffer both "planned" and "unplanned" outages. Gmail never has planned outages (engineers work on the system while it's up), and its unplanned outage time is far shorter than that of in-house business e-mail, which typically sees about 40 to 90 minutes of downtime per month, according to one survey (subscription required) of corporate IT managers."

Quote :
"Indeed, Gmail's uptime is comparable to that of other systems whose reliability we take for granted. The power grid in the United States is online about 99.9 percent of the time—the average household will see fewer than eight to 10 hours of downtime per year. The landline telephone network operates with similar uptime; you've probably picked up the phone to find a dead line once or twice, but it's very, very rare. And I can tell you from personal experience that Gmail is at least as reliable as my home TV and Internet connections, which go down about once or twice a month, usually for a few minutes or so."

And the gmail was only down via http. If it was set up through an email client with pop/imap it still worked (including mobile devices like iPhone).

Quote :
"I've had so much trouble with gmail downloading to any mail client and even to my phone."

You know they do make tutorials for that. You seem to be the only one complaining about gmail.

I very much doubt you get long loading messages all the time with gmail. Web UI is great. Very responsive and fast. Can you name a web UI for mail that works better than gmail?

^^If you do just a tiny bit of searching on google. you will see I'm not alone with the long loading times in gmail.

I just posted TWO separate incidents that i found with less than 1 minute of searching on google. So you should rephrase that to...yes I'm aware gmail goes down from time to time. And I never said the UI sucks, i said the performance and long load times/time outs suck.

^pretty cool but I can see some issues with some things. For example when scrolling through apps and you get to the next line...why not start at the beginning of the next line so the user doesn't have to switch from scrolling left to right. If they're visually impaired what do they care if they're on the next line...it should just cycle through them like they're all in a straight row.

so i bought an ipod classic yesterday that way i could have my entire music collection at my fingertips. I already have the phone, so the touch wasn't necessary and i would have outgrown it in a few months. I love having everything available while travelling or in my car, but wow i really didn't realize how attached i have become to the quick scroll availability on the phones/touches. going from a-z on the scroll wheel is tedious and it'll take me awhile to get used to it again.

I HATE how long the load time for album art is on the iPod classics, too... makes the device feel so unresponsive.
