Taking so long? It's been like three months.

It took them four years to get Bush/SC and everyone in the world knew what happened there...

^^come on man

please don't play like you don't know the differences between the two cases. you know damn well why it took the bush case so long...and that the delay had nothing in common with the unc case regarding their current players

But how am I wrong? The NCAA is one of the most inefficient organizations around. Anyone expecting something as big as this to be wrapped up in a month is being foolish..

I mean we are still getting new and damning news weekly...

I don't see the basic differences. You have players who took money from agents and/or people who they weren't suppose to take money from. You have both the players and the people that gave them the money trying to hide it and stonewall. That's why it took so long in the Bush/USC case and why it's taking so long in the UNC case. People are still trying not to get caught/in trouble.

No. The difference is that Reggie Bush was no longer a student athlete. The NCAA can't make him interview or cooperate. In UNC's case, they can.

the other difference is USC went undefeated and won a national title

UNC won 8 games and lost the muffler bowl

But they can't MAKE people tell the truth. The NCAA came to UNC the first time with general inquiries. Either nobody admitted to anything or they lied. Then they came back with some more evidence and maybe got a few more people to sing. I don't think anyone has revealed anything significant until they've had contrary evidence shoved in their face (it's been documented that players haven't been "truthful" and "forthcoming" with their evidence.)

If everyone told the truth you wouldn't have to wait several years for a murder trial after an initial arrest.

These things take time.

Yeah I am in no hurry to see this play out. It would be nice for the team to be decimated with suspensions by the time we play them this year, but otherwise, the longer the better. Regardless of suspensions though, we should still beat them if we play well.

"kiljadn, my issue is this.. How could there have been a NCAA suspension? They haven't ruled on anything yet? The AP articles said that UNC and the NCAA ruled him eligible so it must have been UNC that held him out of games by choice. I don't see why a redshift wouldn't be allowed.

If it turns out Houston did do something wrong -- and most signs point to that -- then the NCAA will rule on that accordingly. You guys are all going to irrationally hate on me and I'm fine with that but I don't crucify until I get the facts."

So I'm assuming that you're of the mindset that Braylon Edwards should have been able to take a taxi home when the police pulled him over for driving drunk, too.

He did something wrong, obviously. He wouldn't have been suspended - and that's exactly what it was, a suspension, no matter what the UNC spin machine puts on it - if he hadn't.

UNC is spinning it to make it seem like they were performing preemptive due diligence regarding a player in "question." No. That's not how it works.

The NCAA is taking what UNC is doing to these players as suspensions - not this bullshit that UNC is spewing out. As far as i know, the NCAA only communicates directly with the public in very certain instances. That means they're handing these suspensions down, and UNC is "re-characterizing" them for public consumption. The NCAA unfortunately doesn't seem to care about how they spin it in public - they know that a suspension is a suspension. Also, the NCAA can't make UNC do the right thing and pull a player's scholarship, but they can say "Player X needs to serve a 4 game suspension. Player Y needs a 6 week suspension."

UNC then comes back and says "We are 'holding Player X out for 4 games' until we get this situation straightened out."

It's like a defense lawyer saying "We're going to 'hold out' John Wayne Gacy from the game of Life for 40 years until we get this whole murder situation straightened out."

If the NCAA can rule on AJ Greene in less than a week, they damn sure can figure out a bunch of cheating UNC kids. Don't confuse the fact that they are digging deep on the whole agent shit with the very easy low-hanging fruit of suspending players. These players have been suspended and I doubt you'll see any word more about them when the NCAA makes their ruling on the bigger issues.

Forget about Houston who isn't necessarily suspended. They are offering to use a redshirt on Brown who is suspended for the entire year (not just sitting out SUSPENDED). How do you defend that NYM?

^ I wonder what sort of bullshit they used to get him back...truly amazing. He can cheat, take an 'F', and still play. Amazing. I hate UNC but I always thought of them academically as a little bit of a higher standard than that.

I don't want to defend it. It shouldn't be allowed. From the beginning I've been talking about Houston. There is a difference between "suspended" and "held out." A huge one...

supposedly the class Burney cheated in wasn't the one he is currently taking so it doesn't affect his current NCAA eligibility, but he basically got off with no punishment for cheating in a class

Obviously a widespread academic fraud scandal like is what is purported to have been going on at UNC would be a NCAA issue but how is an isolated incident handled?

Say, for instance, Russell Wilson (yeah right!) was caught cheating. Would that be a NCAA issue or is that simply a "go see Paul Cousins" issue? I've always been curious about that.

Burney's cheating is not an issue for the NCAA as long as he is enrolled in enough classes to satisfy the requirements for eligibility, the choice to not punish Burney is all UNC

From that article above:
Quote :
"Defensive end Michael McAdoo and fullback Devon Ramsay have yet to play a game in 2010 as they are still being investigated."

Classic WRAL journalism there...Ramsay scored a TD in their opener, but has yet to play a game this year.
The comments are also hilarious...multiple people saying Burney was cleared by the NCAA, when the NCAA didnt have anything to do with it (not even worded that way in the article).

Wow. Seems like they're getting away with quite a lot. At this rate the NCAA will go back and vacate losses because they didn't get to use eligible players in all their games. Take away that loss because they could have won had all of those recently found eligible players been on the field.

If they are willing to exploit this loophole for a guilty player I don't know why you would begin to think that Houston is innocent. It seems they are just using the same loophole Houston probably just had a lesser number of games he was suspended from. UNC is using the term "cleared" waaay to loosely right now. "Cleared" seems to mean they weren't involved with agents and served their suspensions for cheating.

I can actually see why the institution allows him to take the additional 3 hours, because they feel like with only 3 hours left, if he can take a class and graduate, then so be it (he would just have to do it next semester if not now, he is going to graduate eventually)

that being said, I cannot understand how the NCAA and UNC is letting him get away with cheating on a class with absolutely ZERO suspension.

I have no problem with letting the kid graduate since he is so close, but the fact that he can still play football after all of this without penalty AT ALL is eek1

There's my rational argument fwiw

"Burney's situation is certainly more like most D-I players than let's say somebody "graduating" in 3 years from NC State while playing fulltime football and baseball. Maybe the NCAA needs to look at those transcripts. I'm sure it's full of calculus and other tough courses.....

UNC actually needed Burney last week so this action is proof that UNC is serious about getting these situation right and correct with NCAA approval."

lol. there are football players on all the non private schools that if not for football they would probably be hood rattin in the streets. football is the only reason they are in college.

wilson does not fall in to this category. he comes from a very intelligent family and would go to college regardless of sports.

Couldn't Burney simply have requested credit by examination for a 3 credit hour class. You take an exam and if you pass you get the credits without a grade. I was told while I was at state that you can request credit by exam for any class.

That is a dangerous place to go. Because some cheat (and that is pretty much established) all do?

Anyway I'm done "defending" them though that is a pretty loosely used word in this case.

And, fwiw, I am under the impression that when the NCAA hands down a suspension by law it has to be made public so the idea that a school can "spin it" is odd. Now the NCAA can say a player is ineligible which simply means he isn't using any eligibility because he isn't cleared. Syracuse had this happen a few years back and the guy was allowed to redshirt. UConn had it happen with Majok and though he was classified a sophomore he had 4 years of eligibility left.

I bet UNC is terrified to have these documents released...then there will be no more "sugar coating" the truth.

I think these documents are extremely damning of them and that is why they are not being forward with them...they can't sugar coat what has happened when they hide behind this so called "confidentiality" of these documents.

Ah, the DTH is part of a suit against UNC. They're cannibalizing themselves (presumably in an attempt to maintain SOME kind of integrity, or just because it's the right thing for a newspaper to do). Things like this have made the investigation the gift that keeps on giving.

And just in time for the holidays!
