^^Rush, thanks for answering that. It'll probably be a while. The last step was supposed to take 9 months and it took over 2 years Had to go to the Congressman's office to get it going finally.

How old is the scope? Sounds like recoil got the best of it. I've still got the brand new nikon for sale.

what is a good yugo m24/47 worth?

good wood, bore, bluing...

along with 200 rounds of 8mm surplus.

just curious about opinions here- best guess based on no pics (but they look good to me).

I have no idea on the age.

it was a little loose on the rail, got a metric allen wrench and tightened it today but wont help a bit about it not being able to sight in.

thinking of just selling it and getting a new cheap scope...dunno tho

I know it's probably a long shot, but does anyone have any hands on experience with the FNH FNAR .308 rifle?

I have this pistol, it was my dad's. Some of the metal is looking pretty rough, you can see the pitting and rust. How would I go about refurbishing it? Disassembly/steel wool/buff & polish? Also, I need to find a ramrod for it, it was missing. Could probably make one. Also, knowing nothing about this style of gun, what would it take to fire it?

Links to pics because they're huge, if someone with premie wants to post them go for it.

most of the time, refurbishing old guns like that will hurt the value

eh, it's just a replica, i'm pretty sure, don't think there's any real value to it. won't ever get rid of it, and i'd enjoy fixing it up

thanks for your input, though, haha. somehow i KNEW that would be the first response

[Edited on September 27, 2011 at 12:59 PM. Reason : like 95% sure it's not "valuable", but there are absolutely zero markings, so i cannot confirm.]

in that case, 0000 steel wool

if you plan to hold on to it for a while, i'd get it re-blued. where are you these days? there's a guy in Rosewood who does great work at a fair price.

is it all metal? if so, carb bath/ultrasonic (call a mechanic friend if you don't have one)

then again carburetor cleaner in any form is usually my solution to everything. Someone will likely tell you it's a terrible idea but that's what i'd do

Use 0000 steel wool and oil to rub the rust off.
If it was mine I'd rub as much rust off as I could, oil it real well, and just put it on the shelf.
It's probably not worth enough to justify paying someone to blue it unless you simply want to do it.

Put it on a piece of foil and stick it in the oven on low (200° or less) and see if the cosmoline will melt and drip out.
Another option is to pour boiling water on it to melt the cosmoline out.
Finish cleaning it with brake cleaner if it's metal.

I think break cleaner is cleaner than carb cleaner. Correct me if I'm wrong, but doesn't carb cleaner have a few ingredients to act as lube for carb parts? That's no big deal in most cases but if you're using it to do somethign like prep metal for refinishing then it could ruin the finish.

yeah, brake parts cleaner has to be completely oil free and won't leave any residue

well i was thinking carb cleaner specifically for it's minor lubricity

this is a sheath we're talking about, trying to minimize impact on the bayonet. I don't think it'll ruin the finish but if there's a chance then yeah go with brake cleaner

either way, you get the idea

then again, lacquer thinner may have the best of both worlds...the strength of carb cleaner without the residue. essentially paint-prep it, but you're probably going to want to protect it somehow anyway with a light coat of oil. any rust on the blade or scabbard?

i just filled it up and emptied it out multiple times with gun cleaner, which feels very similar to carb or brake cleaner when i get it on my hands.

shook it up each time and dumped it out- it progressively got less disgusting each time.

after the white crust and cosmoline were gone it looked like i had some surface rust in there, so i used some phosphoric acid to turn that into ferric phosphate (which i didnt learn until later was similar to a bluing process).

so i was quite happy that the rust was turned into a black agent that would actually prevent future rust? anyway, it sounds good in principle. anything that was seriously rusted im sure turned into black goo and ran out the bottom of the scabbard...

so then i cleaned everything up real good with 97% rubbing alcohol- by now all these various chemicals had removed the already shitty finish on the scabbard.

i used a tube of the cold blue paste to remedy this and it actually looks quite good now. the knife itself already looked amazing and the scabbard is good enough now im not afraid to put it on there.

neat little project.

i love old military rifles...

i wonder if the ding in my mosin's stock is from crushing some nazi's head?

i wonder if my enfield is the one that almost took hitler's head off in ww1? it DOES have a stamp on the receiver indicating it was in the greek civil war.

i wonder if my m1 carbine jumped out of planes over the pacific... or if my mauser was in any baltic conflict?

impossible to know in most cases but interesting to consider!

Where/who should I consult for information on a Mosin-Nagant? I'd like to add a .308 carbine to the collection this Christmas. There are a lot of varients and I was curious if someone could sum up nice and simply the desireable models and/or years.

For example, is this 1937 Tula Mosin-Nagant with matching numbers in excellent condition for $120 priced about right?

M38 or M44 are shorter carbines and are a little less accurate and hell on recoil (and more expensive) but MUCH more fun. The fireball at night is amazing.

The 91/30's are great, and hex recievers seem to be most desirable. I've had a few, and they are fun.

I have a buddy with a C&R license that can order you one for a little cheaper than that, and get some ammo as well. I'll talk to you about that on Sat....

i wouldnt call that one "in excellent condition."

and the numbers match because a few appear to be electro-penciled.

buttplate looks awful at that top where it screws in.

you can get a MUCH better one for that money or less at classicarms.us

ive owned tons of these and think i pretty much know everything there is to know about them. its a very simple gun, so that isnt saying a lot.

m44s are getting harder to fine and push $200 these days. beware sloppy triggers.

I got mine at North Raleigh Guns...they have probably about 70-80 of them of varying years and they're all hand-picked from their supplier (i.e. great condition, matching serials, etc). $120 for late models and $130 for earlier/pre-war. If you get there before they run out of extras you'll also get bayonet, strap, tool belt, and a few surplus goodies that are pretty damn cool. They also just know their shit...we sat there for a while and picked through them till I found one that just called out to me

Nope, all the ones I looked at were pretty damn clean. But I also only really picked apart a couple of them, most I would just pick up for general look and feel, test the tightness of the construction, front sight, bolt and trigger. Even the bore on mine is damn near spotless. A good once-over with some solvent and she'll be ready to go.

^^they had 4-5 in the shop and two huge gun crates in their storage next door. My 70-80 quote is a guess but they've got a shitload of them, for sure, and they're all in solid to excellent shape

I haven't even bought a shotgun yet (priority 1 on my "guns to buy" list), and now you guys are making me want to buy one of these rifles...and at a $130 price point, that's not too shabby.

Also, my wife said I could bring this gun up from my mom's once I teach her basic handgun safety and how to use it:

I just need to decide what my birthday present to myself is gonna be this year... I'm between a new firearm, a disc golf bag i've been wanting, and a tablet (I allow myself 1 indulgent present for myself every year). haha I know what everyone in here would suggest, but it is honestly a dead heat (although, at these prices, I could probably get the gun, some ammo, and the dg bag for what I would pay for the tablet)

Damn can't beat that if it was actually in good shape. But from what I understand these guns vary largely in quality, it's worth the $40 extra to me to know it's a solid original rifle and not busted up or a reman/refit

This morning I picked up two older shotguns.

Marlin 795 .22lr w/ Tech Sights

Ithaca M-66 SuperSingle 12 Gauge 3"

1964 Winchester Model 1400 (12 Gauge 2-3/4" semi-auto)

Now I just need to finish up with a Kel-Tec Sub 2000 in Glock .40, a Mosin-Nagant, and perhaps another pistol or two.

oh, when you said you "picked up" a couple shotguns i thought you meant you bought them and i was trying to figure out why anyone would pay for a single shot (besides some rare one, i guess).

My dad gave me an ooold double-barrel 12g, wanna say late 1800s. The thing is cool as shit (almost looks victorian, if that makes sense) but I'd scared to fire it. Definitely gonna have it looked over before I do.

Looks almost exactly like this, though I don't have it in front of me

When I make it back to the states in 2 weeks, I'll be looking to buy either a Smith & Wesson M&P15T or a Sig Sauer 556 Classic Swat. Leaning toward the 556.

What say ye, gun guys? Thoughts/recommendations?
