The name, build quality, barrel quality, milled lowers, two stage match triggers, magpul furniture. The only AR brand with a higher reputation is probably Knights or Noveske - and Knights primarily sells to military & contractors

I think the 5.56 OBR has a 1/2" MOA guarantee. The customers tend to be mostly people who compete or military / contractors. Wait time for a full OBR for a civilian is usually >6 months because deployed military get moved to the front of the line

You can always try your hand at the monthly OBR givaway by LaRue:

went to pdhsc for the first time yesterday. is it common to get hit with shrapnel from other shooters? i got hit in the chest a few times, and a piece glanced off my gf's arm and drew blood. I didn't talk to the RSO about it, perhaps i should have...

we both had a good time, and it was a great first experience for her. now I have somebody to go to the range with

I've been hit a few times, but never hard enough to draw blood

Look around the floor back by the tables and you'll see lots of bullets that have bounced back there. I'm not really sure what people are shooting to cause it to ricochet but it seems fairly common

I too have been hit once, though it didn't hurt. A buddy of mine was hit once as well and it seemed to hurt him a good bit.

I got hit several times there, once right in my eye protection... and it was a pretty good hit- I was very happy I had them on

I don't know why it happens there more so than other places (or is this common at other ranges, and I just haven't noticed it). I'd imagine most people aren't hitting the target returns

i've been hit with splatter with bits of the copper jacket still in it. I can/has drawn blood. most of this has been from shooting steel targets.

are you talking about shooting paper on the static range (right side) or the range on the left side with steel poppers/plates?

this was on the static range.

the guy next to us had a 22, i think it was the keltec 30 round .22wmr, bc he was pretty much going nonstop the entire time. i'm pretty sure thats what was hitting us

anyone on here familiar with HK91 rear sight? got some questions about the spring and detent. i need to know about disassembly of the rear sight. i need to disassemble far enough to get the detent ball out. it will not come out on it's own.

i've had the rotary diopter screwed off the base but don't know if it's possible to go further.

I've got a digital copy of a G3 manual, the sights are the same as the 91, it's got an exploded diagram of the rear sight assembly if you want me to send it to you.

Going to purchase my first firearm in the next couple of weeks. I'm pretty set on something springfield.

Either a SS 1911 just like the one above or an XD-M. I'm not really concerned with CC at this point, so something with a ~5" barrel is fine for me.

Is the 1911 worth the extra money over the XD-M?

while the 1911 is nice, I much prefer the XD or XDm. I absolutely love mine. Though, I do want a 1911, I'm waiting on that one because, personally, I either want a custom 1911 or a real classic 1911. The standard, run of the mill, recent made 1911s don't do much for me.

If it's your first, get the XD-M. Much simpler to work on, operate, and can more easily double as a carry weapon if you decide to do so. It's just an all-around easier to use platform, imo. You may want a 1911 later on, but at that point versatility won't be a big deal since you already have something to fill that role.

They are running an attractive special on XDms right now. 3 extra mags and a mag pouch when you purchase any caliber/size. I'll probably end up going with that, but I really really like pretty things and that 1911 is beyond gorgeous.

Say I go XDm, 9mm, s&w, or ACP?

9mm or 40
9mm = enough stopping power, fun to shoot, cheaper ammo
40 = more stopping power, still fun to shoot, but more expensive ammo

Though I have a 40 and absolutely love it.

thanks i have that tho. I have removed the drum from the base. i have taken it down as far as i can. i think to disassemble further it would mess up the sight.

since it's your first firearm, i'd suggest 9mm simply because it's cheap and you'll be able to practice more at a lower cost. and it's fine for carrying sometime down the road.

I'm looking into getting a tube style red dot sight. Price range is ~$90 and I'm looking for something that is sturdy and preferably with <= 2 MOA. Just about everything I found is >= 3 MOA given the financial constraint.

I found a Millet 1" scope and heard many great things about it. I am curious if there's anything better I should consider without stepping away from the price point too much.

Picked up a CZ-USA Redhead 26" 12ga Over/Under shotgun today so I can stop shooting skeet with my Mossberg 590 pump

Patterned it at the indoor range today, can't wait to try it on the skeet range...it seems like a nice compromise between cheap O/U's that don't hold up well and the $1,800+ range of O/U's.

Absolutely not. The 1911 is the most overrated firearm out there. It is not anywhere near as reliable as the XD will be, holds less rounds, and costs more.

meh- this is totally up for debate... it is like comparing a honda accord to a mustang. One is reliable and economical, and the other is a highly customizable toy that can be used for pretty much the same stuff

not the best analogy, but there are plenty of reasons for and against the 1911. It is a classic gun (there is a reason it is still in high demand after being around for a hundred years) that has a huge following. And the XD is a great example of the "new" polymer guns. It can take more of a beating than the 1911, and is probably more "practical," but the 1911 definitely has its place.

I definitely agree, it does have its place but I do stick with my opinion that it is incredibly overrated. People would have you think that it is the most amazing gun on the face of this planet. I like 1911's but I can be realistic about their pros and cons.

Just interviewed at USA Tactical Firearms (http://www.usatf.us) and it went well.
They make AR-15 uppers and lowers, as well as full rifles, and are located in Statesville.
Wish me luck.

awesome. good luck, post updates!

on a different note: reading about the gun-free school zones act makes me think twice about driving around in NC while carrying concealed.

I'm a south carolina resident with a valid ccw, but the ccw exemption to gun free school zones only applies to the licensee's home state. So, any time I visit my parents' house here in Raleigh (< 1/4 mile from a school), I cannot carry concealed without committing a federal offense.

not as big of a deal in rural areas, but in major cities, it is almost impossible for people from out of state to legally carry concealed.

and another thing: discharging a firearm (even for self-defense) within 1000' of a school is also a federal offense, unless it is on private property and not otherwise against state or local laws.

there's something wrong with this picture

just picked up a brand new XD-9 last friday from my local gun shop. it is my first gun and first gun purchase; i wanted to go 9mm because of how common and cheap ammo is for it. plus i want to hone my skills first before moving onto bigger calibers. but pretty excited none-the-less

this is what i got:

How dirty is it?
You can use a rag with hot water and wipe it out. Just make sure you squeeze most of the water out of the rag.
If it's really dirty then put a couple drips of plain hand soap on the rag, work up a lather, then squeeze almost all of the soapy water out of the rag before you wipe. Follow that with a clean slightly damp rag.
If the leather is dry you can put a TINY amount of leather conditioner on it. The best way to do that is put a little conditioner on a rag and wipe it on.

How concerned are you about that shiny gun? If you don't want any wear then don't holster it. The reality is any holster will wear the finish on any gun with use.

anyone with a LCP want to weigh in on carry options/holsters.

I currently pocket carry with an uncle mike's pocket holster. I like pocket carry; however, the holster doesn't fit my LCP too well/or it's just been messed up by use. The butt sticks out of the side/back and my LCP doesn't fit in the holster squarely.

Considering another pocket holster, or just going for IWB with a crossbreed.

I want to buy a pistol in a private deal. I have the purchase permit required by state law, however in the private sale neither one of us knows what to do with it.

Does he just need to see it, or does he need to keep it?

My other pistol was bought at a pawn shop and they dealt with the paperwork for the most part.

Thanks in advance

By law he is supposed to take your permit and keep it. I normally just let the person bring me a copy, as I know they are hard to get.
