That's what really grinds my gears. Instead of taking the "these kids made poor choices and are now facing the consequences" route they took the "no one knew any of this was going on, we are the victims here, please feel sorry for us" route.

I am totally ignorant so please clear this up for me. Are these players actually being ruled ineligible by the NCAA Clearinghouse? Or are they being held out by UNC because they might be later ruled ineligible.

This misunderstanding is completely keeping me from agreeing 100% with you guys..

both. most of the hold outs are for the academic prong of the scandal, which the NCAA has not been involved in for the most part. They are just now sort of getting to that.

I like how Charles Brown, who was ruled ineligible for the LSU game (read: not a precautionary holdout from the game, but an actual ineligibility issue from either UNC or the NCAA), is planning on coming back next year as a redshirt senior

Although he might be full of shit and planning on going to the NFL draft

Only two, they served a 4 and 6 game suspension respectively. The rest were done for the year or ruled permanently ineligible (Austin, Little)

Houston, who was serving the 6 game suspension, was held out an additional game due to academic eligibility issues --UNC tried to "add" a class for him in Oct. when the add deadline was the end of August. Houston is trying to use a redshirt as well, although he may end up having to play this weekend with White out or if another RB gets hurt.

Lol. You run a program that has three prongs sticking in it but you are still winning games so here you go... Coach of the year! But that's only because you "didn't know."

You guys really don't get it yet do you? The tutor is complicit in this release. She is just one more cog in the UNC "not my fault" machine. The NCAA and the press were allowing UNC to handle the academic "prong" without any oversight. UNC took advantage of this situation and cleaned everything up. Most likely she is a willing (paid) scapegoat who will never have anything to say about the reality of the situation. So far UNC is pointing fingers (rogue agents, players and coach) and the tutor is just the next person who is to blame for the situation (poor unlucky UNC for all this to be happening to them). The interesting thing is this is most likely the "cleaned" version of the academic situation at UNC. I wonder what the real situation was like if this is just what they couldn't hide!

so let me get this straight... the tutor was paying the players too??? lol.

so, I guess Butch(or some booster) was paying the tutor like $1500/hr to "tutor his son"?

We HAVE to know how much the tutor was making now, Butch has to put this info out there or someone has to find a way to check tax returns or bank records.

Whether she's complicit or not, this is still big news. Regardless of how the info that the tutor paid for player expenses came to light, the natural question now becomes, "Where did the tutor get the money to pay for them?"

This is purely speculation, of course, but it's not too much of a stretch to connect the dots between "tutor paid for player expenses" and "tutor was employed by BMFD to 'help his son'."

former players with payouts

http://sports.espn.go.com/ncf/news/story?id=5793098
Quote :
"CHAPEL HILL, N.C. -- North Carolina said five people -- including former UNC player and current New York Giants receiver Hakeem Nicks -- provided "impermissible gifts of cash and jewelry and impermissible assistance" with travel and entertainment expenses. Nicks, who left Chapel Hill for the NFL after his junior season in 2008, provided $3,300 in benefits, while former UNC players Omar Brown ($1,865) and Mahlon Carey ($140) also were listed.

The news release also mentions San Francisco 49ers tight end Vernon Davis ($20) and "a person from Miami whose full name is not known ($323)."

ACC blog
ESPN.com's Heather Dinich writes about all things ACC in her conference blog.

• Blog network:
College Football Nation

The school identified all five people in reinstatement requests sent to the NCAA as part of the process to clear players in the probe.

Brown previously was linked to the investigation when the NCAA suspended cornerback Kendric Burney for six games and safety Deunta Williams for four games. The two players had traveled to California to visit the former UNC safety, who Williams said they had befriended a few years earlier.

The school said the amount -- totaling $5,648 between the five people -- also includes the estimated value of lodging at their homes during visits. Some of those benefits were repaid by the players or hosts before they knew they had broken NCAA rules.

The school also said that while Nicks, Carey and Brown thought they were helping friends and former Tar Heels, "there is no evidence that links them to inappropriate relationships with agents, prospective agents or runners."

Meanwhile, the university has formally broken ties with the tutor linked to the ongoing NCAA investigation of its football program.

In a letter dated Nov. 5 and released Thursday, athletic director Dick Baddour informed Jennifer Wiley of Chapel Hill that the university had learned she provided "impermissible extra benefits" to players, including about $2,000 in travel expenses this year. It also states she "provided impermissible academic assistance" to some student-athletes in 2009 and 2010.

"As a result of your actions, the eligibility status of several of our student-athletes has been adversely affected," it states.

The letter insisted she have no contact with any student-athlete for five years. It bars her from the Kenan Football Center and other campus athletic facilities in any role outside that of as a member of the general public during that time.

Wiley didn't respond to an e-mail from The Associated Press seeking comment Thursday, but Raleigh attorney Joe Cheshire issued a statement on her behalf saying she "acknowledges her role" in the investigation. Cheshire said Wiley allowed a player to use a credit card for a transaction, then was "immediately repaid" for that amount and "never knew this type of transaction was impermissible."

"She gave several years of her life trying to uplift, educate and enhance the lives of student-athletes that she worked with and befriended," Cheshire said. "All of these young men were of the highest caliber. She did not intend for her work to 'provide impermissible academic assistance' and to the extent it did, she is deeply saddened, particularly as it has affected the young men she cared so much about."

The NCAA began looking into agent-related benefits in the program over the summer before expanding the investigation to include possible academic violations involving Wiley, who also had worked as a tutor for coach Butch Davis' teenage son.

Thirteen players sat out the opener against LSU due to the investigation, with six players sitting out the entire season. Three of those were either dismissed from the team or declared "permanently ineligible" by the NCAA.

Five players have returned to game action, while a sixth -- tailback Ryan Houston -- was cleared to return after missing the first five games and had planned to redshirt. But Davis said this week Houston might return for the final three regular-season games after the Tar Heels lost leading rusher Johnny White to a broken collarbone and Shaun Draughn sprained an ankle.

Defensive lineman Michael McAdoo is the only player from the LSU group whose status is still in question. He hasn't played this season. Fullback Devon Ramsay played four games before the school decided to hold him out. He hasn't played since.

Information from The Associated Press contributed to this report."

fuck college sports. minor leagues for the pros. just start paying the fuckers and you would avoid bending and breaking the "rules".

A shitload of money is going away when they do start paying players - I give boosters the benefit of the doubt that they are not going to Cam Newton every 4+ star recruit. They might, and I'm out like a boner in sweat pants. No way am I paying for a bunch of guys who can't pass a HS equalivalency exam to get four years of bling, hoes, and Escamalades.

At some point, money will talk. Hopefully, the boosters with the most money stand behind the schools with integrity. I almost see a civil war erupting. Maybe it will coincide with the conference shake up.

Fuck college athletics - might save a few years off my life if I quit caring...last week took at least .3 years off. For those of you that say "good riddance" to my type, enjoy your minor leagues. It's worked out great for baseball.

Hell I don't even care for the idea of athletic scholarships for people that are idiots. I went to high school with a guy that could hardly spell his own fucking name, watched him get a free college "education" at UNC and then go on to the NFL, all because he's fat and tall. Makes me sick.
