Is there any option out there to hook up a keyboard/mouse type setup for the xbox and use it in games like Left4dead or halo instead of the standard controller? 10/26/2009 10:12:24 AM |

Damn that looks complicated to do.
But it looks like you can buy them all pre-assembled?
How does it work? Do you install updates for games via computer?
Never mind, their eBay page has far more information than their website.
damn so you have to have it connected to the PC while you play? My xbox wont be near a PC.

It's a lot less complicated than it used to be, since they weren't always prebuilt. I constructed one of the first generation XIMs and it worked flawlessly until I replaced it with one of the current generation XIM2s. Because it's a highly customizable device, you will have to configure it for each game with which you want to use it (e.g. one config for Bad Copmany, one for COD, one for Left 4 Dead, etc.).
You do have to have the device connected to a PC in order to run the software which translates mouse movement into joypad commands. The absolute beauty of it is that any key on the keyboard or mouse can be mapped to anything on the control pad. At any point in time, if you want to switch back to the control pad, you can just pick it up and play.
While the device may not be cheap, it has been worth EVERY penny and then some. I have bought so many games which I would not have touched if I had been limited to playing them with the control pad. If you have any questions about it, let me know. 10/26/2009 1:41:57 PM |

Do the quick mouse twitches to say completely turn a character around or look straight up and straight down translate well? 10/26/2009 2:15:53 PM |
Axelay All American 6276 Posts user info edit post |
It is totally dependent upon how the programmers coded "stick" movement in any particular game. COD4 is hands down the best example of almost completely flawless mouse control. You can play it with the XIM and probably not be able to tell the difference between PC and 360. Other games can be a bit more particular. Halo is the game for which the system was originally designed, so there's been more effort into making it a PC-like experience than say Bad Company. Other factors to consider are which type of mouse you're using. Really high DPI mice tend to work best with this device, but I'm still using a good ol' wireless Intellimouse Explorer. In all, so long as you're willing to continue to "tweak" the XIM settings and understand all of the mechanics of how you can affect its input translation, there aren't many control obstacles which can't be overcome. I can't tell you how much more I enjoy Gears of War when I can play it with a mouse and keyboard.
I'd say the single biggest factor for me in wanting to use this device is hatred for the control pad. I am just plain awful with the control pad in FPS games. After playing FPS games on the PC for so long, when they started coming out on the PSX and other systems, the skill just did not translate well from mouse to control pad for me. I absolutely could not develop the kind of precision to which I was accustomed, and it only led me to greater frustration. I'm probably willing to forgive more shortcomings of the XIM than a truly hardcore gamer due to the fact that I hate the control pad so much. 10/26/2009 10:00:54 PM |

Well, I have not always found this to be true. I'm hardly considered great at any of the FPS games which I play, but having the mouse and keyboard at least makes me viable. I've taken my XIM devices to Halo and COD LAN parties and got absolutely stomped on by people using the controller. I know that there are people out there who will beat me every time with the controller, and they'd never know that I'm using a mouse. It just means that they are better with their controller, and that they probably have a lot more experience using it than I do. It's all just a matter of personal preference.10/27/2009 1:33:51 PM |

Borderlands for sure. It's an excellent blend of role-playing elements and first person shooter. It's very much a gear-dependent game, complete with color coding and the whole 9. It's rumored to have the most largest array of weapons of any console game to date.
I've got a couple of gripes, there are some pretty glaring bugs that never should've made it to the version that hit shelves and you're forced to pick your class in the first ~3 minutes. Overall though, I'm definitely enjoying it, I'm thinking of actually purchasing a retail copy to safely get on board with the XBL group questing and whatnot.
The youtube video's don't do the game justice, but checkout gamespot.

The soldier class video is what sold me on the game.

is there really difference in the classes aside from the guns you start with and your "special" move? like i'm a hunter but i've picked up shotguns and other non-sniper related weapons 10/27/2009 3:44:19 PM |

^^I've heard it's like Diablo II with guns and a bit more varied gameplay than "left-click a few times, then right-click"... which sounds like a great fucking thing.
^To continue the Diablo II comparisons, you could pick up any class's weapon in that game, too, even in strictly single-player mode... and the requirements to wield something were typically just "have high enough strength" except for the occasional class-specific item. But the downside to this was that things tended to suck more on classes not meant to use them... I have to assume that Borderlands is using a similar "you can still use it, but you'll suck with it by comparison" mechanic. 10/27/2009 3:51:03 PM |
krs3g All American 1499 Posts user info edit post |
The differences really come in with the talent tree and the class mod. Any character can use any weapon but the class mods and the talent tree impact the effectiveness of said weapon use. For example, I'm a soldier and one aspect of my talent tree deals with improving the performance of the combat rifle - increasing damage, increasing clip size, reducing recoil. I'll rarely use a sniper rifle simply because it's not practical to do on a regular basis without the performance buffs.
I'd have to imagine hunters have something similar in regards to long-range weapons. 10/27/2009 3:59:26 PM |

I just picked up a used xbox off ebay yesterday right at 100 bucks for 20gb, headset, 2 wireless controllers. Only after I bid and won did I think about the RRoD thing. How do I know if the model I just bought is post RRoD fix? The Mpn is B4J-00107 if that means anything. It also has an HDMI output.

From what I can tell, and remember I have not played it, is that it works pretty much like Diablo 2. The loot drops and its FFA.
I believe if you pick a piece of loot up, you can throw it back onto the ground for others to pick up; so you can 'trade' with friends but its not secure like say WoW.10/27/2009 9:30:24 PM |

I was having a heating issue, not RROD or anything but just frame rate reduction when shit got real in some of the more graphic-intensive games. My box was already out of warranty, so I decided to get on board with a few cooling mods (among other case mods, obviously.)
The stock fan has been connected directly to the 12V power source on the mobo. I added XCM core coolers, also wired to the 12V power source on the mobo. (out of the box they're powered by the DVD drive, but this can have majorly adverse consequences.) Vent added to right side of case to improve airflow generated by ^ Fan controller added to make the box viable as a DVD player again as the noise from fans when they're running @ top speed is pretty noticeable.
I've never had any frame rate reduction since putting the mods in place.
Those external cooling fans are shit and the 3rd party fans advertised to be 'whisper quiet' are just as loud as the stock fans.
Also, if you've got a wooden or enclosed entertainment center either take the box out of it or position it in a place large enough to circulate cool air.10/28/2009 3:08:41 AM |

What if it's Sunday?
Going back to Borderlands, I really can't tell the main difference between classes other than the special ability. I'm playing as a Soldier because I wanted the ability to heal myself, which has been extremely helpful. I basically powered through the medic tree to get the ability that every time I kill something, I go into a "regen" mode for several seconds and gain health. Helps a lot when being overwhelmed. Especially if I drop the turret at the same time and it's also healing me.
I wish they would have thought more about the loot system though. If I start co-oping and a fantastic combat rifle drops, it shouldn't be the fastest to run over to it. Brick should want shotguns, the hunter should want snipers, soldier and rifles, etc. The fact that every class can be good with every weapon doesn't make sense to me.
Are there any class specific weapons at all? At any point is there a "Hunter only" gun? I've obviously seen class specific mods, but that's not the same.10/28/2009 9:22:16 AM |
krs3g All American 1499 Posts user info edit post |
I agree with the issues on the loot system. The most thought they put into it was the tip on load screen that says 'the party does best when everyone has good gear...share the loot'. 10/28/2009 9:46:29 AM |

^^I'd be very surprised. I was loving this game to begin with but I'm hitting kind of a slump now that I'm in the mid-20s, it's all getting very repetitive. I ran across a couple of key blue and purple drops and I'm terribly overpowered for the quests. I've got more gripes with the loot system, my level 19 blues have been better than live 22+ purples in some instances. I'm not terribly certain that I'll complete the title any time soon now that I'm also rocking Tekken 6. 10/29/2009 10:49:35 AM |

"We have taken action against a small percentage of consoles that have been modified to play pirated game discs," a Microsoft spokesperson told IGN. "In line with our commitment to combat piracy and support safer and more secure gameplay for the more than 20 million members of our Xbox LIVE community, we are suspending these modded consoles from Xbox LIVE."
Though Microsoft wouldn't confirm specifically when these bannings took place, a quick look over on its official forums suggest it's been going on over the course of this past week. Plenty of users have created threads on the technical feedback forum reporting of having their Xbox 360 console banned.
Microsoft also added this is a standing policy and isn't tied to any specific time-frame.
"All consumers should know that piracy is illegal and that modifying their Xbox 360 console to play pirated discs violates the Xbox LIVE terms of use, will void their warranty and result in a ban from Xbox LIVE," the spokesperson added. I'm curious to know how these guys got caught. If it's playing shite versions of games on XBL, shame the hell on them. If it's an issue where M$ has the capability to actually check the firmware on the disc drive (which doesn't sound too far fetched) then it may present a real problem. Hopefully the next version of iExtreme will resolve the issue and even if not, its been a good run. 10/30/2009 9:45:36 PM |
