Good to have that confirmed. I thought when I was shooting maybe I'd achieved a clear objective to the picture, and that's the best one.

I haven't shot in months and months, and I feel shamefully rusty.

With this one, I am having trouble deciding how to crop. I settled on two, then picked the best one a couple hours later, and then just now, while getting the large size to post here, saw yet another crop that would look good - the left 4/5s.

[Edited on March 9, 2009 at 5:41 PM. Reason : made the edit]

But now I can't decide which of these two I like better.

i just picked up a d40. i am a total noob when it comes to dslrs i've read over a few faqs and beginners guides but was wondering how you guys got to the point of taking amazing photos. were you into photography b4 you got your slr?or did you just stroll around taking pics of everything(what i'm doing now)? most of the pics i've taken look better than my pics taken w. my canon sd600 but a lot look close enough to question which camera i used . i'm sure theres some tips in the thread but i've gone through ab 30pages and can't keep my hands of my new toy long enough to read through them all. school me t-dub

I've got a 12.1" (yes that 0.1" matters, just ask your mom, but I digress) Those pictures just about fit on my screen.

i just call it 'retard' resolution because all the icons are big and look stupid. but really, my laptop only has a 13" monitor (i was over exaggerating before - typical guy ) and i can see the whole thing. guess that inch or 0.1" in humandrive's case is critical.

Yeah, it's angled, for some reason I'm really bad at that and with a dog that sits still for two seconds......well also trying to fix it in PS just pisses me off more than anything.

I think the red dot is from glare

long shutter speeds? you need a fast (big aperture) ideally.

my kit 4.5-5.6ish lenses are crap at night, but my 50mm 1.8D is quite awesome.

Because of the engineering required to produce something this precise and intricate.

the left hand side of the first picture is pretty busy with the mountains and boat and... i don't know how i'd fix it though.

also, both the horizons are crooked as well, and that's somewhat distracting.

looks like costa rica or something. awesome location.

pictures from the philippines. could straighten horizon with lightroom but didn't bother since it will screw up with the a little crop.this is out camera shot--not much editing here except auto levels. camera d200 with some tamron lens.

Not only is there a lot of engineering and design for telephoto lens, but the fact that high quality optical glass is $1000 per lb with just one lens having a dozen or more elements.

And yes, I failed at posting the picture. Stupid non uniformed forum image tags for this site.

Well, we know why Kiwi likes them.

Nice lens Jbaz, but I'm not in the market for a slow telephoto zoom. Also, I'm poor.

An art house contacted me today with a client of theirs wanting to purchase one of my photographs of Kay Yow. I gave them a quote with a modest fee for myself and included a nice $450 donation to the Kay Yow/WBCA Cancer Fund as part of the contract. I hope it sells

^no, but lenses designated AF-S have the autofocus motor in the lens.

this is true of the D40, D40x, and D60.

kiwi, really, stop posting shitty pictures...

horizon issues
cropping issues
focus
improper use of light, color, contrast, and black and white
the list goes on and on....

then you complain about pictures being too big....

Yeah, I bought one for my girlfriend last week.

She has yet to use it though. I got the first 3 rolls developed. Some turned out cool, some didn't. Using 100 film was kinda limiting, though. I picked up a few rolls of 400speed Kodak Portra, so we'll see how that works.

I like how spontaneous it is, and how it's a guessing game trying to figure out what you'll get, but I prefer my slr. I like being in control.

Does the monopod make that big of a difference in sharpness? Or is it more convenience, just in case.

It isn't the camera, it's the post-processing done in photoshop.

Do you know what a monopod does?
