WTF Marquis??? He was good last year with 15 wins and now he has nothing. What is that 7 losses in a row? We need to call up the Reyes kid from Memphis, he looks very promising. 8/24/2005 12:07:36 AM |

Well I guess all of us Cards fans have become bored with the 14 game lead and all. Man i hope they win it this year. Carp is a candidate for Cy Young and Pujols may actually get the MVP he has prolly deserved for 4 years now. 8/31/2005 5:07:45 PM |

12-0 in his last 15 starts, all of them were Cardinals wins
he'd be a 25-game winner if he always got run support 9/9/2005 10:42:49 AM |

ncstatetke All American 41128 Posts user info edit post |
but it's more realistic for Carp
Clemens would need 14 of his no-decisions to be reversed in order to achieve 25 wins
Carp needed 4
(and Pedro would need to be on a good team...catch my drift)

^^ irrelevant. If Clemens had the run support all year that Carp has had he would have more wins. How many losses, let alone ND, has Clemens had giving up 1 or 2 ERs? I'd be willing to bet it's more then the 4 ND Carp has..
It is extremely hard to win 25 games in this day in age. Think about the greatest 7 year stretch from a pitcher in our lifetime (obviously Pedro Martinez '97-'03), maybe in baseball baseball history even. He peaked out at 23 wins. His ERA over that time was less then what Carps is this year. If he got run support he could have easily won 27 but it is just unrealistic to think that a team could do that over a 162 game season. Pedro in '99 only had 23 wins with a 2.04 ERA and a miniscule WHIP. His ERA+ was less then 1.70. He did all this on a team that was 3 wins shy of the WOrld Series.. 9/9/2005 11:42:08 AM |

they are NOT ifs. if clemens had the run support in each #d start that Carpenter had he would have 23 wins right now. period.
I'm not saying Carpenter doesn't deserve the Cy Young... he does. But Clemens has pitched better this year..
Roger Clemens has given up more then 2 runs THREE times this year (Pedro also did it 3 in '99). Carpenter has given up more then 2 run TEN times this year. He won 8 of those games.
V this is pointless. I am owning you left and right and you will never admit it. I'll give up... today

there's another "if"
9/9/2005 11:47:02 AM |
NyM410 J-E-T-S 50085 Posts user info edit post |
How is it an IF. It is quantitative. Look up the numbers for yourself. It's not too hard using CNNSI.com. It took me 5 minutes.
Here is what I'm saying. Take the run support the Cardinals gave Carpenter in each numbered start (i.e.- in Start 1 the Cards scored X runs, in Start 2 they scored Y runs). Now look at how many runs the Astros gave up on starts that Clemens pitched. (if you want to you can use the Run Support stat on stats, inc but that only gives runs scored while the pitcher was in the game). It is easy to say that if he got the Run Support in each numbered start that Carpenter had then he would have 23 wins right now. This isn't hard, is it? 9/9/2005 11:53:20 AM |
FeebleMinded Finally Preemie! 4472 Posts user info edit post |
Seriously that has no validity whatsoever.
What does have validity, however, is everytime Carpenter needs to throw a great game (ie, he is facing a good team or better yet, a great pitcher), Carpenter goes out and throws a shutout. The same can't be said of Clemens. Carpenter shows up for big games. End of story.
