haha, how do u know ur valves need to be adjusted? 5/11/2005 6:58:58 PM |
smoothcrim Universal Magnetic! 18966 Posts user info edit post |
depends on the bike, there are recommended adjustment intervals, but if it the valves are making an annoying tick or the bike's just not running right, it's something to check.
^^ I dunno about a wheelie, I haven't tried yet on mine, probably with some rocking, clutch, and a lot of gas you could.

yep... valves will make a very audible ticking when they're loose. you'll also notice a slight decrease in performance in the upper rpms. if they're too tight, you'll have crappy performance across the board if it will even run. too tight will only occur when they're adjusted wrong though. 5/11/2005 7:31:15 PM |

bloody fucking hell
pops and i took the gs apart today trying to figga out what was wrong we thought we had it figured it out so put it back together - and of course, its worse... dad thinks the problem was one level farther than we broke it down...
oh well, probably time to to put it in a shop...at least for an estimate (or just buy another cheap bike) 5/14/2005 5:48:41 PM |

Well it looks like I found the bike for me. I am pretty sure that I am going to pull the trigger on a BMW K75. (Not the one on Craigslist...it is in crappy shape)
Now I need to pick some brains for some more info.
I am planning on taking a trip if I get it...and I will be going thru Texas. Obviously, it is going to be hot and long.
What types of clothing would you reccomend? I have ridden bikes for years but never long distance. (In excess of 3 hours at a time) 5/15/2005 1:34:41 AM |

you can check out cyclegear store in Raleigh. 336 Tyron Road 27603. You can browse there. If you got the money, a nice leather jacket, but a good tough textile jacket can be good too (kevlar reinforced and such.) 5/15/2005 3:11:51 AM |

First Gear has a mesh jacket that is great. You can't even tell you are wearing a jacket when the bike is moving, but it won't melt into your skin if you wreck. It has a little padding in the elbows and back as well.5/16/2005 10:41:18 AM |

my jacket just came in the mail. the sleeves are the right length, but the jacket doesn't seem to be long enough to cover my full torso. Anyone have a guide as to proper fitment? Is this how it's supposed to fit? I'll take pics in a minute. 5/17/2005 3:49:17 PM |
Skack All American 31140 Posts user info edit post |
Most motorcycle jackets seem to be cut shorter in my experience. I'm guessing it has something to do with the fact that if you sit on the tail of your jacket you wouldn't be able to lean forward without standing up and moving the jacket out from under you first. 5/17/2005 4:13:37 PM |

I'm a noob. What's a fairly good, yet inexpensive dirt bike to learn to ride on? Is 125cc something that I should start with? I really don't know a thing about dirt bikes, but I would like to learn to ride one. And are there any good areas around Raleigh to ride at? 5/17/2005 5:48:15 PM |
smoothcrim Universal Magnetic! 18966 Posts user info edit post |
there are a bunch on craigslist, dirtbikes are fairly tame so I don't think you'll have the same issues with getting a bike thats "too big" to learn on like you would with a street bike. they're air cooled, low compression (relatively), and don't rev all that high. 5/17/2005 5:52:20 PM |
JBaz All American 16764 Posts user info edit post |
yeah my jacket seems a little short too when I first got it, but its a pretty good fit when your leaning forward and riding. 5/17/2005 7:02:13 PM |

hmmm... i'm really hunting for a crotch rocket, but it looks like i may be doing a budget/cheapo chopper instead. 88 virago 1100, only 8k miles. might be doing a trade for my newport after he takes care of a little surface rust and rebuilds the carbs. can't seem to get away from the sport cruisers, that's what my previous 2 have been. i left them stock, but this one will get a hard ass, fender treatment, (lose the front, trim the rear), hack the seat up, and get rid of other generally un neccessary trim/accessory parts... flat black from a can too.

will also need a different tank, different set of pipes, new set of handlebars, headlight and a trim in the wire/gauge pod department to make it look badass. i like how virago engines look though, and the parts for them are abundant, i've had an '81 a few years ago.
it might be a little easier to make a power cruiser out of it, a-la V-max. and i know i've posted this pic before, but this is the sweetest looking virago on the planet as far as i'm concerned:

Hey...just a heads up. Cyclegear off of Tryon Rd has some jackets on clearence.
I picked up a Tribal Fusion coat by Hein Gerecke (Not sure of the spelling). It was 199.00 and was on clearence for 79.00
That also had a few Alpinestars on clearence for 59.00 (Orig 149.00)
Not sure how common this is but they seemed to have better prices than most places I found eithier in store or online. 5/21/2005 11:07:18 PM |
