was that scene with doyle and his buddy from denver as straightforward as it looked? buddy helps doyle, then immediately turns on him? that whole sequence was weird

Quote :
"The day '24' stood still

Some days you just wish would end already.

Alas, no such luck with Fox's 24. Counting tonight's episode, there are still nine hours to go in what is turning out to be the show's worst day ever, one many viewers seem to be watching more out of duty than pleasure.

Considering that last year's 24 run was one of TV's best, this year's collapse is a more shocking twist than any the plot has provided so far. After a strong opening, the show almost immediately lost its way, lurching from one unsatisfying set-piece to another, with plots and characters that range from the recycled to the ridiculous.

Despite its shorthand reputation for telling one story in one season, 24 has always built its day around multiple tales, but they've never seemed this tenuously related. If Jack's Bad Dad never shows up again, will it really matter to the plot's resolution or to viewers?

Sadly, there have been weeks when it seemed the writers were as intent on torturing us as they were the characters. My Daddy, the murderer? The strained attempts to get us interested in some past Denver-centered conflict between Milo and Mike? The almost criminal waste of Jean Smart and Gregory Itzin?

And worse seems yet to come: Another Palmer president being threatened with removal by a Cabinet that should be in awe of his powers of recovery. From comatose to commander in chief in 10 seconds flat — that has to be a record.

But then pretty much everything poor Palmer the Younger (an underpowered D.B. Woodside) does epitomizes the season's main problem: We've seen it all before, done better. 24 has simply gone to the same government/business conspiracy well too often, so much so that the quirks and red herrings we used to accept or cherish have begun to grate. Certainly you'd think by now CTU's enforcers would have learned how to capture someone without killing him or letting someone else kill him.

In marked contrast to last season, 24 also has done a poor job of servicing its guest stars, and with so many regulars dead, those guests have taken on even more importance. Powers Boothe and Ricky Schroder are fine actors, but here they seem to be in some odd yin-yang relationship, with Boothe chewing the scenery and Schroder blending into it.

Missing amid all the improbable kisses, conflicts and conspirators is even the slightest hint of fun the format used to allow, from Jean Smart's demented first lady sticking her head in the sink to Mary Lynn Rajskub's Chloe tasering a bar hound. Indeed, seeing how bottled up Chloe has become, I keep hoping the show will send her and Jack to China to find Audrey — and don't let anyone connected to the president, CTU or Jack's family be behind her disappearance.

24 has never been a great drama: The characterizations were always too thin and the plots too outlandish. But it was a great TV show, and with luck, will be so again.

Just probably not today."

Spot on if you ask me. I totally agree with the watching for duty and not pleasure part. That's the only thing keeping me tuned in.

From a nuke strike will destroy our country to saving the country & presidency in about 1 minute?

Do the writers just not give a fuck anymore?

next they should have palmer pull off his skin only to reveal that he is really an alien preparing the invasion of planet earth.

seriously, how fucking cool would it be if a show actually did something so incredibly implausible and retarded once.

^ and when Jack gets shot next episode, the terrorists will approach him only to realize that it was actually Fayed wearing a Jack Bower mask, while Jack escapes to a helicopter with the two suitcase nukes.

^ yeah, exactly. I started with my smart-assed remarks just about 30 seconds into the episode, and my wife yelled at me - "if all you do is complain about it, just stop watching it!!" i didn't really have a good answer for that.... i mean, yeah, it's really pissing me off, but i feel like i have an obligation to see where this all goes!

i saw the arm chop coming...they should have put that radioactive isotope into his ribs instead of his arm...or spine or something....

also it was hilarious when fayed yelled "i hope your friend dies!" and then jack kicked him in the face...that whole scene was great...the bar was kicking his tail

It's going alright so far to me... entertaining but not to the point where I can't wait for the next monday.

Does anyone see resemblance of Mike Doyle to Bauer though? A part of me thinks if Bauer goes down Doyle is going to take over.

this is keifer sutherland's last season. Doyle is going to be the Bauer replacement in the last few episodes this season and the last few days of the series.

i think kiefer is supposed to be in the movie, so if that takes place chronologically after this season, it might be wierd if doyle takes over.

unless jack really does quit after (what appears like from next week's preview) he is shot or whatever

how could it get this bad?

it's really hard to fuck up a show that's getting so much money thrown at it from all sorts of advertising - they can afford to hire the best writers, the best stunt people, the best everything. and they come out with this melodramatic piece of shit season. someone somewhere is cramping some major creativity. blame it on the bush administration - everything else is their fault rofl
