Yeah that Aybar, et al. trade really was bad.

Although Betemit isn't lighting up the stats this year, he was a good young prospect and will hopefully develop into a good, if not great, player.

nice start to tonites game. Andruw and Frenchy both with 2 out RBI.

Isn't that single A pitcher Vanden Hurk pitching for the Fish? Never threw a game above A before 2 starts ago. The Mets destroyed him but he does have a nasty curve...

Although the alternative options are slim, the Braves really need to find a starter to replace Redman.

jesuschrist. He's walked 3 batters in a row to load the bases. We HAVE to make him pay for this.

is it too early to say kj doing a better job than giles, both offensively and defensively?

ive been very impressed with kj defensively especially coming from the outfield... he really showed his outfield ability on the last out in the 9th and his patience at the plate has also impressed me and i think has been a big part of his success at the plate.

Marcus Giles who?

haha EVERY YEAR! people want to trash Schuerholz for trades made or not made and just about every year it works out in his favor. I liked Giles and I wasn't sure what KJ would bring but if he keeps this up his offensive output will exceed Giles and his defense is SOLID, PLUS! he's about 3 mil a year cheaper at this point.

According to Rotoworld, we just signed Smoltz to an extension.

Jesus, $14mil for next year. I love Smoltz and all, but this is another classic case of the Braves overpaying one of their veteran players. We could get a lot more, and a lot better for $14mil.

ESPN is reporting that the extension, Smoltz will get $14 Million for 2008, a 2009 option that automatically kicks in if he pitches over 200 IP in 2008, and a club option for 2010.

well, aside from chipper he's pretty much the face of the braves. he's still pretty effective, so i don't have a problem forking out some dough. i just wish they would put some money into the rest of the team as well

$14mil is WAY too much to be paying Smoltz next year. Like I said, I love the guy to death, and he is one of the faces of the Braves, but eventually you either gotta give them a big pay cut, or just not sign them. $14mil could go along way to helping the Braves in the next few years. A lot more help than Smoltz can provide.

^^ i completely agree... aside from smoltzie still being one of the most dominant righthanders in all of baseball he is still the face of the braves and one of the classiest guys in all of baseball. its also gonna be good for the younger guys like james and davies to soak knowledge from over the next few years while they develop. and lets not forget the man's record in the postseason... 15-4 with about a 2.65 era and is unbeaten in game 7's i believe... lets see if we can get a few more of those kind of wins the next few years out of him.

tom glavine, greg maddux, and gary sheffield probably don't agree with this statement

and while $14m is probably too much, what the fuck else are we gonna do?

Quit bitching about this. It was good signing. In a day and age when fucking Ted Lilly and Gil Meche get longterm deals over $11M per signing John Smoltz to a shortterm deal for a few mil more is a GREAT move... just like the Mets giving Glavine and Duque $18M per combined was great..

sheffield was in atlanta for two years, i think

but he should have been here for several more

i think signing smoltz to an extension is a good move

it's not like there's an over abundance of solid starting pitchers on the market

[Edited on April 27, 2007 at 11:43 AM. Reason : unfortunately, this means we now have zero chance at re-signing andruw ]

The best way to build a rotation, in my opinion, is a few high priced top end guys and a bunch of homegrown (or system) young kids with upside. There is NO point to throwing $$$$$$$ at mediocre mid level guys like Gil Meche or Ted Lilly when you can get their production from kids in your system for relatively free. I think both the Mets and Braves have done a great job doing that and it will show as them being the best two teams in the division over the next decade.

exactly

you have to overpay a bit to hold on to pitchers that you can actually depend on (i.e. smoltz, glavine, pedro, etc.) or you'll end up signing free agents like gil meche (whose contract with the royals is identical to the extension johan santana signed a year or two ago -- which is fucking ridiculous)

with one or two of those types anchoring the rotation, you can bring in a veteran journeyman for relatively cheap (more like el duque, less like mark redman) and fill the rest with young guys who are going to have ups and downs (davies, james, pelfrey, etc.)

starting pitching is the most important part of any club and the most sure fire way to build a contender

Exactly my point. They should be using that money to re sign Andruw.

What an awesome fucking catch by Frenchy

and big bob looked hurt last night

Anything wrong with Wickman? Walk-off passed ball and then they had to put in moylan (FUCKING MOYLAN) to finish his job in the 9th last night.

No closer controversy yet... and I sure as hell hope Wickman comes out and restores confidence.

wickman was uncomfortable for some reason last night

it looked like he was trying to stretch his back out -- and he definitely told the bobby to take him out

Braves win 6-2 tonight

Frenchy and Edgar with a solo shot a piece. Chipper with a 2 RBI single and Kelly Johnson with a rbi triple.

Smoltzy pitched 7 strong innings with 8 strikeouts for the W.

15-8
