I think if Detroit wins the East, the West will still probably win but it won't be a sweep. I'm not so sure about other East teams. Boston might win a game.

Clippers Blazers on 954 is a close one with 45 seconds left in the 4th

He has no shot at winning it and doesn't deserve to

But if you take the definition of Most Valuable Player literally

Gasol has probably meant as much to his team as any player over the past few weeks

If that trade doesn't happen, I think the Lakers would be treading water in the 6th or 7th spot

Biding their time till Bynum came back

how would paul not be deserving of the most valuable player award?

and does anyone agree with reg about the heat making the playoffs if they had kobe instead of wade? not so sure about that

Gasol isn't that valuable. When you add a good player to a good team, they'll get better. He obviously adds a lot to the team...but his season is shit compared to Chris Paul's or even Kobe's.

Chris Paul isn't the MVP because a guy named Lebron James is having a sick season. Look at his PER, his improved defense and jump shot. His stats are nuts 30, 7 and 7......and if you just watch the Cavs play it is clear that he does EVERYTHING for them.

Paul would be number two on my ballot. The only chance he has is if if the Cavs record is much worse than the Hornets record......

If the lakers continue to win like this, Kobe will win it.

If kobe were on the heat or any other team in the NBA they would make the playoffs!!!

Fuck that MVP talk about Paul, he will have his turn and so will Lebron

but this is KOBE BRYANTS year as MVP!!

yes, if Kobe had Marion and Wade to run with....they'd make the playoffs in the East.

Kobe isn't having a better year than Lebron. Not really that close.

It is a shame that he might not win a single MVP his entire career when most fans, players and coaches agree he's the best player in the league.

Shaq at least won 1.

Kobe plays waaaay too good of defense to get the MVP

after all Nash won it back to back seasons

and he's one of the worst defenders in the league

lebron is having a statistically better year than Kobe

but Kobe's Value to his team has them on top of the West, which may be the single best conference in NBA history

KOBE = MVP

Are you saying if they replaced Wade with Kobe that they would make the playoffs?? Because that's not true.

If you are saying that if the Heat added Kobe to Wade and Marion that the Heat would make the playoffs in the East?? Then yeah...no shit Sherlock.

And Lebron deserves the MVP this year with Kobe and Paul at 2a and 2b. The season Lebron is having this year is just sick...just like his all-around game and the way he is carrying a shitty Cavs team (did you see their record without him??).

Sorry Kobe-lovers...he's having a great year again, but will end the season MVP-less...which I doubt he'll care if they win another title.

He's carrying them to a record of only a few games over .500 in a horrible conference and 10 games behind the leader in their division. The East is still garbage, there has been no resurgence. There are only five "good" teams in the East and only two that have a legitimate shot at a championship. Yes, his numbers are amazing and he is probably going to be the best player ever when it's all said and done, but this should be Kobe's year to win the MVP.

This is the best the Western conference has been in a decade and Kobe has them at #1. His numbers aren't as good, but then, they don't have to be because he actually has help. He's doing everything he needs to do to keep his team at a championship level, including playing with a torn ligament in his finger. Kobe may not be "carrying" the Lakers but they still wouldn't even be a playoff team in the West without him.

Even though his numbers aren't the best he's ever had, most people around the league are saying this the best they've ever seen him play. Kobe = MVP.

Uh, he took a team that had Smush Parker running the point and Kwame Brown playing the 5 to the playoffs two years in a row. In the Western Conference. Don't tell me he couldn't take the Heat to the playoffs in the shitty East.

Kobe (or LeBron, or most other superstars in the league) wouldn't let their team lose 26 of 27 games

Even playing with 4 corpses, they would have willed their way to a handful of wins in that stretch

Wade mailed it in

That they are, but I mean, come on. Some team(s) is going to make the playoffs in the East this year with a record right at or below .500. Could Kobe have taken the Heat to the playoffs this year? No, probably not, but I don't think it's any less likely then him taking his last two Laker's teams there.

Well below .500

The 9th team in the West will be at least 11-12 games better than the 8th team in the East

Meh...I don't think it's a huge difference...and I'm lazy and don't want to break down the teams player for player...but I think the Lakers teams of the past two years are/were better than this year's Heat team. Just my opinion though.

Powell with 4 quick points. Fast break dunk and a nice mid range jumper.

First time i've watched the Clips/Josh play live and all he does on offense is stand down low. Doesn't look like anyone tries to get him the ball.

shrike, your post is so frustrating because there is merit in a team's record while deciding an mvp. BUT the lakers TEAM has them at the top. Bryant is definitely the best player, but the addition of Gasol and the best bench in the league is what has them at the top of the conference. It is a deep deep team with good players.

Lebron is having a significantly better statistical year (by far the best in the league), a winning record (though not as good as the lakers, yes) and his team is shitty.

Lakers have Odom, Bryant, Gasol, the deepest squad in the league, they had Bynum for most of their wins. Shit, Fisher is better than most of the Cavs. I just don't think record should be a heavily weighted criterion when analyzing Bryant vs. James when their teams aren't even close to equal.

Yeah...Lakers have a pretty money bench. Farmar and Fisher are pretty interchangeable with the exception of Fisher's experience and "clutchness." Walton is extremely solid...Turiaf gives great energy, defense, and rebounding. Sasha is killing it from 3pt land right now. Everybody is learning their role on the Lakers right now...that is what is making them so scary.

LOL at who ever said Kobe isn't the MVP. 44 points, a game saving defensive play and the offensive rebound/free throws to (probably) seal the game.

Yeah Van Gundy nailed that called

and I agree with the announcers about falling in that situation

It burned LA once, and very easily couldve burned them again

I'm sure the League was happy to have Kobe and LeBron dominate in their national TV slots

Rockets still looking good.

They play really really good defense and have great guard play. They are playing well as a "team." I hope they can still make the playoffs without Yao.

because the mvp is won in that one game......

I'll really be stunned if the Rockets make the playoffs without yao, but I do like their team better than the Warriors. I shouldn't be assuming Denver is the sure thing either

But ofcourse I'd rather see the warriors make it because they are more fun to watch

Two things...and I think the first is probably because I'm a T-Mac homer, but:

1) If T-Mac had the same intensity and killer instinct as Kobe or Lebron...he would be the best player in the NBA. I think he has the best skill set and physical qualities as any player in the NBA. 6'9", dribbles like a PG, shoots like a SG, and matches Lebron in every athletic quality except for power and strength. When he is on his game, it is beautiful to watch.

2) This is from ESPN's Daily Dime:

"If the Cavs played in the West and the season ended Sunday, Cleveland (34-26) would not make the playoffs."

Scary how good the west is. They were saying during the Rockets/Nuggets game last night how Avery Johnson (at least I think it was Johnson...I know it was some current coach) said they should take the top 16, regardless of conference, and put them in a one-team playoff ala March Madness.

I don't personally like it...but it would be fun as hell.
