Today we profile Georgia Tech's Bobby Dodd Stadium, capacity 55,000. It's full name is Bobby Dodd Stadium at Historic Grant Field and is nicknamed The Flats. Grant Field was the sites original name. Bobby Dodd Stadium being the oldest stadium in Division I-A (it opened in 1913), has a ton of tradition and history. The original stands were actually built by the students. In 1916 the most lopsided game in American football history occurred when Georgia Tech beat Cumberland College 222-0. Legend has it that Coach Heisman was repaying the Bulldogs for a 22-0 defeat the previous year in baseball in which Cumberland had used allegedly professional players to ensure victory. In any case, the Engineers (as the Georgia Tech team was known at the time) never threw a pass and never took more than four plays to score (now that's some school spirit ). One of the most well known traditions at Georgia Tech games is how the team takes the field. Every game the team is led onto the field by the Ramblin' Wreck, a 1930 Ford Model A Sports coupe colored gold and white and is adorned with cheerleaders riding on the running boards (I wonder if any have ever fallen off). The coolest thing about the vehicle is that fastened on the front bumper are two golden nylon pennants with one saying "Give 'Em Hell Tech" and the other telling their rival where to go with "To Hell With Georgia". Despite being one of the most well known stadiums in the country it isn't a pretty one. The architecture of the stadium makes it look more like a tackle box, it's not symmetrical, one corner has makeshift stands sitting atop the concourse, and the additions are pretty ugly. Don't expect a raucous crowd outside of the student section. The stands are routinely not completely filled, and the crowd doesn't get into it like at Clemson or Virginia Tech. Despite this it is a great stadium to take in a game, having pretty good sightlines (unless you are in the corner part of the endzone upper deck) with the stands being pretty close to the field, and great views of downtown Atlanta. It's a setting unlike any other in college football.

It's a pretty terrible design, and you know if that was State's stadium every one would be arguing about how ugly it is and how it's not aesthetically pleasing. The design of the stadium makes it seem like they didn't think much of it through as they added on. They just put seats any which way. This is evident by the corner seats, the odd upper deck with only one side curved, and the weird and small overhanging seats on the other side, plus the upper deck addition stands are dark looking rather than the bright concrete look in the rest of the stands (see final pic of my above post). You just expect better out of a school known to have one of the best engineering programs in the world. Originally the stadium had a horseshoe shaped design. Here's the view from those notorious corner seats. Notice how the view of the goal post is blocked by the corner of the upper deck.

the one thing that stood out is that its the smallest actual field I have ever seen, as in the size of the grass area. You could look across the field to the other side of the stands and make out individual people easily, very odd feeling, but you are very close to the action. I could hear the linemen talking shit to each other

absolutely.


i talked with my neighbor, who is a USC season ticket holder, and he strongly affirms that it will be no problem to get tickets down there for the game. With it being a Thursday night, it draws some people away since its tough to get back for work and whatnot.

Cincinnati unveiled their new uniforms this past April. They have white, red, and black jerseys. They also went very bold with untraditional cat scratches on the side of the legs.

I like the overall look of the UC uniforms from afar, especially the claw marks on the legs. Up close, they look too XFLish and those bearcat eyes on the back are goofy. But since you aren't five feet from them when you watch a game, I think they're a good improvement.

I don't really notice any differences in the USF uniform other than the numbers. I bet they're getting a ton of money from boosters because of last year's season, so why not splurge on new unis.

Rieskamp was one of TOB's first true recruits even though he was in the 2007 class. He did not come into the picture until after TOB took the job. He was rated a 3* prospect by Rivals and a 2* prospect by Scout. Besides State he had garnered interest from West Virginia, Akron, Ball State, Miami-OH, Ohio, Boston College, Cincinnati, and Michigan State. During his senior season in high school Rieskamp tallied 56 tackles and nine sacks, was named all-state, all-district and all-league. He was ranked as one of the top-50 players in Ohio by Rivals.com. He actually grew an inch since high school and went from 235 lbs. to 295 lbs. GoPack.com though still lists him at 6-3 235.

Today we profile LSU's Tiger Stadium aka Death Valley aka The Nation's Most Dreaded Road Trip, capacity 92,400. This wondrous stadium opened November 25, 1924 with a capacity of 12,000. It has had many renovations since then. The stadium has definitely earned the nickname of "The Nation's Most Dreaded Road Trip". The crowd is one of college football's best, and the traditions they have are almost unmatched. I personally love when they play Chinese Bandits. Whenever LSU forces a turnover or gets the ball back via a defensive stop, the LSU band plays the Chinese Bandits tune. The entire stadium bows to the defense while the tune is played. Tiger Stadium is one of only three Division I-A schools that still use the classic double-posted goal posts. Florida State and Washington State are the other two. Another unique trait to Tiger Stadium is that yard lines ending in "5" are marked, unlike most football fields where only the yard lines ending in "0" are marked.

Hmm...they were on there last year. Perhaps those lines in the pics from the helicopter were taken sometime soon after the spring game. I doubt they'd care to put in the numbering for the yards ending in 5 just for a spring game.

also, if i'm interpreting this right, it looks like they changed the helmet-to-helmet rule. now you can have helmet-to-helmet as long as you don't use the crown of the helmet, or if the other player is defenseless.

did i get that right? if so, that should get rid of the lame calls where the qb gets hit and the sacker's facemask glances off the qb's helmet, resulting in a 15 yard penalty, especially if the qb is a pretty white dude who will soon be sent to his own room to cry about his plummeting draft status.
