I hope JJ gets 8-12 minutes for the Cavs this year. I've got some friends in Cleveland, and I wouldn't mind seeing him play in an offense that didn't revolve around him. 7/21/2008 9:21:50 AM |

here's some analysis of Hickson's summer league performance from college hoops net:
Quote : | "After striking out on the likes of Luke Jackson and Shannon Brown, the Cleveland Cavaliers finally got it right with J.J. Hickson. He is just one of three players who the Cavs have locked in after next season and should prove to be a valuable investment. Hickson exploded for 26 points and nine rebounds in his first game and averaged nearly 20 points and eight boards during summer league. He outscored highly touted lottery picks O.J. Mayo and Kevin Love, showing he was worth the Cavs' wait at the 19th spot. " |

Quote : | "JJ Hickson has been out at Tim Grgurich’s big man [camp] out in Vegas, and has looked good … I’ve heard similarly….
For those that may not know who I’m talking about, and the history of this camp setting … I’ll give you some background ..
For many many years the very best post instructors in the world was a man by the name of Pete Newell. He was the founding father of the “Big Man Camp” ..[this] was way back in the early 80’s I believe.
Most every notable big at some point had some exposure to this man, and his teachings …and the play of the post position players today has his teaching impronts all over them …as many that had participated in his camps …took his methodology and concepts and made them their own.
Well, Tim Grgurich is the guy that has taken over that camp and is running it now out of Vegas ….it originally was out on the west coast ..for a while in the LA area ,and for a while in the SF area …
Tim G. has been a longtime assistant to George Karl wherever he has made his stops along the way in his career …and along with being a great camp for post players ..you also have seen a large contingent of coaching assistants break ground on their careers at this camp …
[Hickson] participated in it this year and came away holding his own very well …I was told he went up against a number of NBA level players at the camp and not only held his own, but actually was one of the standout performers of all that attended …
So, Hickson is continuing to build upon the statement he made at summer camp …and as more and more people get exposure to his game, he’s opening more and more eyes and turning heads …
I was told by Danny Ferry himself that if the draft were held today he would be a high lottery selection …maybe the 2nd big off the board … " |

Quote : | " [Ilgauskas down for a month...]
...That’s because rookie J.J. Hickson is now getting major minutes, and any experience he picks up now should prove beneficial down the road.
In the five most recent games Ilgauskas has missed, the 6-foot-9, 242-pound Hickson has averaged 8.4 points and 5.0 rebounds in 21.4 minutes a night. The 20-year-old — Hickson can’t legally buy a beer until Sept. 4 of this year — has shot .545 from the field, but has struggled to a .500 mark at the line in that span.
“I started to play harder,” Hickson said. “With Z’s situation, I needed to step up.” The No. 19 pick in the NBA Draft has certainly done that. In the last five games, he’s scored 13 points twice, tied his career high in rebounds with six on two occasions, then reset it with seven boards against the Grizzlies while adding nine points.
“We wanted to really get to the glass and put pressure on them,” said Cavaliers small forward LeBron James, who had a triple-double with 30 points, 11 rebounds and 10 assists. “Two of our key guys are out, so everyone had to step up, including myself...
...Hickson, who is shooting .537 from the field and .607 at the line, still gets lost from time to time, but his tremendous athleticism, leaping ability and knack for making plays around the basket at both ends of the court could come in handy in the postseason if he continues to progress...
...In a best-case scenario, Hickson will end up being another weapon in the Cavaliers’ arsenal. At times, he looks like an unbridled colt bounding around with wild enthusiasm. He can be unpredictable, but the potential is easy to see, which is why numerous teams have already inquired about his availability...
...Brown’s goal is not to limit his rookie, but to harness him a bit and help him limit his mistakes. “J.J. is going to be a very good player in this league,” the coach said. “He just has to keep working hard every day.”" |
