how so? this wasnt even a close game at all. the red card wasnt necessary. if you are making a comparison to the tottenham game then it would make sense had gomes received a red card...normally i wouldnt care so much cause fletcher is hit or miss on this team, but hes been playing well lately.

Whenever somebody brings up a dodgy penalty United receive or a call that goes their way, United fans find any example to offset the biased officiating to get people to stop complaining. Here's one of those apparently (I actually haven't seen it yet) - so stop complaining.

because I'm agreeing with you and assuming it was a bad call... but United gets bad calls in their favor all the time, so it evens out

^^ I don't know if that is true at all.

I thought Barca would destroy them at the Nou Camp, but they didn't.

Now it is all literally up in the air.

Okay, I finally saw the Fletcher tackle...

Harsh? Probably. But nowhere near the bullshit worst red card in history like you guys were treating it as... it was a very clumsy challenge and a slight touch on the ball first does not excuse what ultimately amounted to to a scissors-like tackle from behind. I probably would've shown a yellow there but I watched it in slow-motion about 15 times - in real time, that definitely could look like a red card worthy tackle.

2:45pm here. I might try to hit a bar or something for the final too. No emotional investment in the teams left, but I'll at least attempt to get off in time to see the game.

Good, because I checked the time on three different sites.

All said 20:45, and none of them either listed the time zone or gave the option to change it.

GG, Internet.

before i respond, i would like you to know that no one ever said it was the worst red card in history, nor did we imply that. we were angry here that the referee made the WRONG call. the issue here is that fletcher made a play on the ball. he touched the ball, and you agree with that fact. he denied a scoring chance by making a play on the ball rather than denying a scoring chance by making a play on the person. that's the difference between a red card and NO card. true, his tackle was from behind and was clumsy, but at this juncture of a 3-0 game, when only 1 yellow had been shown (just moments before), a red card was unnecessary.

that being said, the official doesn't have the benefit of slow motion, and the tackle definitely did look worse at full speed than on a slow motion replay. it sucks for fletcher, who has been playing well and made a great tackle. but oh well.

Oh well, I guess this is a conversation to have some other time but I'm not a believer you change the rules for the situation or player. If the referee thinks it was a red card, he should give a red card, no matter what. I mean, disagree with the actual call all you want, but not for that reason.

Again, it was a very slight touch on the ball and the second half of the challenge looked rough in real time. The referee can't be everywhere to see everything. I think it's more disappointing that United cannot appeal the decision and even more disappointing that the red cards carry over into the final.

But if you make it easier to appeal and overturn decisions, that undermines the authority of the referee which gets worse and worse every year. I think officials behind the goal area would be a better solution because I'd really like to avoid instant replay.

i wasn't asking for a situational rule change, but rather a call more consistent with what had already transpired. the red didn't feel consistent with how the game was being officiated since the beginning, and there had been really tough challenges without so much as a yellow card (save Nasri's) the entire game. but you're right, you can't change the rules for each circumstance.

okay, that makes more sense... I was just going by your comment of "in a 3-0 game." Yeah, you probably have a point but I didn't watch past the 20th minute so I can't really agree or disagree.

my problem is that everyone is like 'slight touch', but if you watch it, it was enough of a touch where van der sar got the ball before fabregas wouldve been able to. and VDS plays the ball with his foot clearly showing that he saw fletcher play it back towards that way(not picking it up with his hands). fletcher wins the ball at waist height and the ball goes right of fabregas..what does the ref think here? that fab played the ball with his hip to the right to try and beat VDS...id like to see if he acknowledges that he knew if fletcher won the ball but just gave him a red card for the challenge after he won it...which was hardly malicious. still kind of mad he didnt bother giving adebayor a red card for that stomp he did to carricks leg.

the thing is, Chelsea has to win

it's not easy for any team, at any stadium, to score more goals than Barcelona

oh wait, no Henry...that changes things a bit and certainly makes it more of a question

someone has to win to advance. 0-0 on the first leg at Barca.

hopefully chels won't go all soft like they did on the road. they didn't really even look to score in the last match, just tackled and booted the ball to keep Barca from getting into any sort of rhythm. (which was smart, don't get me wrong, but they have to score today.)

thats the worst thing you wanted for an entertaining game, chelski scoring first...great strike but i really would not be surprised if chelski sit back a bit more now...i hope they dont at least for this first half, i wont be able to watch the 2nd half

^^they sat back on 0 for 90 last week. barca are gonna start to attack and chelski will sit back. might counter a bit better than last game but i wont be surprised if guus plays real defensive now.
