From the NHL.com "situation room" blog:
Interpretation of goalie interference rule: New Jersey at Carolina - 19:59 of the third period 04.21.2009 / 10:19 PM ET
The NHL's goalie interference rule sets a mandate to protect the goalie in the blue ice – to let the goalie do his job. In the white ice, it is a more delicate matter, including who moved into whom. The referee has one split-second look at it and it is a judgment call. The Situation Room has no video review capacity in this instance. That said, the Situation Room officials agreed with the call on the ice, that it looked like the goalie, Martin Brodeur, moved out toward the skater. 4/21/2009 10:26:33 PM |

Brodeur's reaction:

Brodeur calls referees "pretty awful" after last-second loss
Devils goaltender Martin Brodeur believed he was interfered with by Carolina's Jussi Jokiken prior to Jokinen scoring with just 0.2 seconds left in regulation to give the Hurricanes a 4-3 victory in Game 4 of the Eastern Conference Quarterfinals tonight at RBC Center.
"Not on the shot itself, but before that," said Brodeur, who threw his stick in disgust after arguing with referee Eric Furlatt about it after the game. "Just for him to get position on me. It's always the debate on what the rules are being called out there. But it is what it is."
What was the official's explanation?
"That I had time to reset myself," Brodeur said. "That's always the same answer. It doesn't matter which referee it is. That's the easy way out to say."
Brodeur said he got the same explanation after Chad LaRose' goal that made it 3-0 6:30 into the second period after Ryan Bayda made contact with him in the crease.
"It's hard," Brodeur said. "You want to play your game. You want to do what's right and be in the best position you can and these guys, that's what they do. They go to the net. They play hard. I'm not complaining about how Carolina is playing. They're not taking liberties. They're pretty fair about it. They go to the net. It's the referees. That's what their job is. Today it was pretty awful, both of them."
Such criticism of the officials can sometimes bring a fine from the National Hockey League.
Brodeur said his stick-throwing incident was the result of a combination of his frustration with the officials and with losing the game in that manner.
"It was both," Brodeur said. "The bad call and losing the game and everything. It's emotion that builds up when you play. I felt I kept it in the game at 3-0. They came storming. It was an unbelievable comeback and it let this go on a goal like that is not fun."
The Devils tried to stay positive as they head back to Prudential Center for Game 5 on Thursday night with the series tied 2-2.
"It's definitely a disappointing loss, but we didn't lose anything today," Brodeur said. "We still have home-ice advantage. We lost a game. That's it. So, we shouldn't be disappointed. We played 20 minutes, 22 minutes in the game and we pushed it to the limit."
***
Here is the explanation from the Hockey Operations Department's blog on the NHL media site of the review of the winning goal to see if the puck crossed the goal line before time expired.
"Play was reviewed to determine if the shot by Carolina's Jokinen crossed the line before time expired in the third period... the review determined that the puck crossed the line with 00.2 seconds left - good goal for Carolina."
Of the ruling that there was no goaltender interference on the play, the blog said,
"The NHL's goalie interference rule sets a mandate to protect the goalie in the blue ice -- to let the goalie do his job. In the white ice, it is a more delicate matter, including who moved into hime. The referee has one split second to look at it and it is a judgment call. NHL Hockey Operations officials agreed with teh call on the ice, that it looked like the goalie, Martin Brodeur, moved out toward the skater."" |

Alright, I was there, and hear me out here, this is why all of you need to pool your money to buy me a ticket to game 6
1- Ive been to 2 playoff games vs the devils over the years. First was the game where Staal scored with 3 seconds left to send it to overtime where we won.
2- This was the second game
3- I was also at game 7 of the finals
If you all pool your money and buy me a ticket, something good, and something crazy will happen. Pull out that wallet, DO IT! 4/22/2009 12:20:31 AM |
