^^ terminator 2’s story was not that amazing. It was fairly mediocre.

Terminator 2’s directing was what set it apart, not really its story.

This was one battle. The Romans reconquered that area but then left since there wasn't much benefit to attempting to hold that land. The story is very reminiscent of the Avatar story though. There was even a insider in the Roman forces who helped the Germanic tribes to destroy the Roman armies, just like Jake in the Avatar.

^^ regardless, T2 showed that Cameron could make a movie that had everything. Avatar only demonstrated he could make a technically great movie.

Just saw it @ IMAX last night... Amazing!

Screw the story. If I want a good story I'll go read a book. The graphics were off the hizzle fo' shizzle. Definately worth every penny.

to me there were three aspect, the graphics, the story, and the world of pandora

he did well with the graphics and creating a seemingly complete new world of that we spent a good amount of time exploring like it was a national geographic special
so i think that made up a lot for the lack of an original story

I disagree. I thought T2's story was quite good. It seems unoriginal now given the abundance of machine-as-a-menace plots in recent sci-fi.

I got that too. I wouldn't have minded it if they hadn't jammed every political message into one line from the bad guy. "WE'RE GOING TO FIGHT TERROR WITH TERROR WITH A PRE-EMPTIVE STRIKE USING SHOCK AND AWE RAWR"

Saw it tonight. My biggest complaint was the super over the top soundtrack. It seems like every time they had a wide shot the orchestra would crank it up to 11 and the african chorus would go nuts while James Cameron punched me in the face to make sure that I noticed how fucking epic it was.

for me the biggest moment was when the hot VTOL pilot chick overdramatically delivered the line "daisycutter..." [scowl]

like, come on.

How did Sam Worthington make his legs so skinny? There were one or two shots where I thought HOLY SHIT - how did he atrophy that much?

saw it at IMAX... story was pretty weak, allegories to imperialism and environmentalism were way too heavy-handed, but the graphics and the way they utilized the 3D technology were pretty amazing so i had a good time

Saw it tonight. Finally I can click on this thread.

Really amazing presentation - clearly a lot of work was put into this alien world. Story was nothing new or interesting, but it still drew me in. I wasn't bored at any point.

Other than the "Fight terror with terror" line, this movie was almost completely devoid of any political references to the real world. There was a comment about an ambiguous conflict in Venezuela, and near the end there was a vague mention of Earth losing its "green". Its a stretch to say this movie is "preachy".

The biggest flaw for me was the lack of motivation for the main bad guy and the pilot chick. There was no explanation for his obsession with winning, and the girl's sudden 180 was similarly unreasoned.

I thought about that. I think that every country on earth that they mentioned as a site of future war was also a country where Avatar would probably be banned by the government anyway, or at least it wouldn't make much money so they didn't care if people got pissed about it.

"They killed their mother" wasn't a tad preachy?

I don't remember that line. Even so, those comments didn't have any significance to the actual story. Most films have at least this much preaching.

If the story had an actual connection to the situation on Earth, for example if unobtainium had something to do with restoring earth's ecosystem; then I would have thought it was preachy.

i understood more about the colonel (for some reason) than i did the pilot. when she broke them out i thought it was cool of her but kind of thought wtf? i guess she had some kind of internal feelings of wanting to help save the natives but it wasn't clearly expressed in the movie

I took her motivation as coming from someone that had worked with the Avatar group for a long period of time. Basically she was involved with that specific group that she grew to have sympathy first for her comrades and then, by extension, the Na'vi.

I saw public enemies last night. Badass general in avatar is the guy that caps Dillinger in the dome. That makes two movies now that I've been rooting for that guy in.

Either way I AM sorry if my post ruined part of that movie for you. I wouldn't worry though; it isn't a very good movie and when the shot does happen you're just thankful its over.

my thoughts were fairly in line with Mr. Joshua's first post on this page..
additional thought was it was okay... maybe a 7/10 for me. graphics were awesome and the execution could have been worse, but the commentary and overall  that was a good bit of the dialogue just hurt a little bit.

Avatar has reached $1,424 million worldwide gross, making it the 2nd highest-grossing film ever.

If it can make another $400 mil, it will beat Titanic. MLK Day may tell.

In reference to the question about his legs - it was not CGI. They made the legs using molds from someone who really couldnt walk, his legs were tucked underneath him.
