So how do you go about making a lake or pond in the game?
Every time I lay water down, i get wierd currents, etc... I just want it to fill up an area i carved out. 10/9/2010 8:42:34 PM |

To do a pond or something, you need to make a checkerboard of holes.
Like this:
+-------------+ |OXOXOXOXO| |XOXOXOXOX| |OXOXOXOXO| +-------------+
Where O is the holes (or X, doesnt matter).
Fill each of the holes in with water, then carve out the non-holes one at a time. When you carve out a block, make sure that it has water on at least 2 sides of it before you carve it. You will get currentless water.
If you want it more than one level deep, make sure you start at your highest level, once you have a complete area filled with water 1 level deep, you can carve down without causing currents. 10/10/2010 7:55:47 AM |

Not really
You can just dig out an area and keep filling it with water 10/10/2010 7:57:36 AM |

Just pouring water in never worked for me, it always kept evening it out to be a filling current/infinite spring. 10/10/2010 9:39:13 AM |

To make infinite water you need two buckets of water. Dig a hole 3x1 wide. Fill each end with water. It will stop flowing and become solid water. Then you can take out the middle block of water infinite amounts of times. 10/10/2010 9:43:48 AM |

Thats what I did when I started moving to larger areas, made a small pool nearby so I could get my water from there for the larger grid.
I made an olympic swimming pool for god sakes 10/10/2010 10:21:41 AM |

You can also make a 2x2 square and put a bucket of water in two opposite corners... then you can take water from anywhere in that pool 10/10/2010 12:49:09 PM |

If you want to see the final product, head over to the "Wolfmarsh Recreation Center" on the TWW server.
Not nearly finished, but pretty good for what I've got so far. 10/11/2010 9:46:43 AM |

Does the material matter? As in, will it work if the pond is dirt, not stone? Is there a server flag regarding "water stay?" Nothing works. 10/11/2010 10:35:57 AM |

Underwater building is getting annoying. Having to stop to breath isn't too bad, but it's almost too dark to see anything. Mincraft needs underwater lights. 10/11/2010 3:36:18 PM |

^glass tube+lava=underwater lights
and I'd just like to go on record as saying that I mined every single block for my buildings by hand, no spawning here

I think buckets are broken in multiplayer... any water/lava placed from a bucket just disappears.
If you're an admin, you can create a water source block, and the above techniques should work10/11/2010 3:55:37 PM |

On the server you don't need to worry about being underwater. You won't take damage or die. Same goes for Lava...you catch on fire but that's about it.

I tried frapsing a video at work today, buy my little tablet there wont handle fraps and minecraft at the same time. Ill do it tonight once I put my kids to bed.10/11/2010 5:42:31 PM |

Step 1, dig the checkerboard.
Step 2, fill all the holes.
Step 3, Begin to carve between the holes, 1 by 1.
Step 4, Remove the center block.

^^^ Trying to make a simple pool. Tried a 2x2, checkerboard, 1 x 5 row, and others. After dumping the bucket of water, there is water for 3 seconds, and then it vanishes.
I am not in or anywhere near the spawn zone.
New: davidkuntuu told me there was a third party fix required in order for water to work correctly in multiplayer. Perhaps it has not been implemented in the server I'm playing on.

Well, I'm now officially done with Minecraft single player.
I have all the materials I need, a ludicrous mining operation, and built a fort that unless Notch introduces flying enemies, is impregnable.
Hell I even went back and made the lower walls from obsidian (which I actually created and mined legitimately). Maybe multiplayer will make it more fun in the future. 10/12/2010 1:37:23 PM |

^^^
1. Start a new map 2. Build a boat first thing 3. Spend a full 2-3 days just sailing away in no general direction from the spawn point 4. Start building, knowing if you die you might never find your way back again 5. If you die, repeat steps 2-4
Optionally, if you manage to get far enough along to build a compass in your new location, you can build a series of markers back to your spawn

Fastest way I've heard of is to use dirt or rock for the outside layer, then fill the inside with wood and burn the wood.
But yeah.. same principle, just a faster way of clearing it. 10/12/2010 5:34:42 PM |
