a textbook example of how great production can make your band's sound infinitely more interesting...to me, their last few releases (possibly in large part because of the lackluster production) just sounded uninspired. the new one definitely does not."

Another new my morning jacket song is out today. Also heard the red hot chili peppers are coming out with a new album in august. Really wish those assholes would stop. Hopefully it'll encourage neil hamburger to make more jokes at their expense.

New MMJ song is fucking terrible IMO. That's only after one listen, though, and the first track off the new album was awesome.

2. Fuckin' A, California
3. Cali-fucking-fornia
4. Venice Beach, CA
5. Under the Bridge 2011 (California Remix)
6. Say Goodnight California
7. California I Love You, But You're Bringing Me Down

little short but should still be sick

Yeh, the first FF album is way better than the new one. The new one definitely isn't terrible, but it doesn't feel fresh and new like the first album. It feels so derivative. I can't listen to a single song without thinking, "oh, this sounds like simon and garfunkel... bob dylan... crosby, stills, nash, and young... etc.... etc..."

^^ and everything that jim james sounded responsible for with monsters of folk. i was cautiously optimistic about this new album after "circuital," but i'm expecting it to be sub par at best after "hangin on to black metal"

haven't heard the new fleet foxes yet, but i tired of their first album pretty quickly

For the number of times I listened to the first Fleet Foxes album, I felt indebted to the band to go out and buy it on record. The second one, however, I will not even consider purchasing. I guess 'terrible' is harsh, but it's certainly not outstanding to say the least. The only thing that sticks out on that album is the lyric, "snowflake, distinct among snowflakes," and that's because I make fun of it all the time.

Fixed...or if you really want to get into specifics, everything I've heard by them over the years since Run Thru finished playing the first time I heard It Still Moves. At Dawn is one of my favorite albums of all time...but I probably won't even bother with the new one (which I didn't know was even being released).

And I was the one who likes the new Fleet Foxes better than the first (didn't like their first one at all, actually). New one has a more..."open" feel to it I guess would be the best way to put it. Maybe it's the weather...either way, I like it way more than their first one.

is a bunch of bullshit. they made one bad album. you don't know if the new one is gonna be bad or not. it could go either way; the first song that leaked off of it was awesome, and the second song that leaked off of it sucked. it's generally good practice to listen to an album before saying it sucks or it's going to suck.

^^^ In fact their last album sucking so bad is pretty relevant considering they've made what, 80 now? Do you think any of the Stones' albums after Tattoo You were worth a damn?

If this were Fleet Foxes on a sophomore attempt here, then yeah, I probably wouldn't pay much attention to what their last one sounded like so much...

this is one of the dumbest things i have seen posted in the history of TWW, that's saying a lot.

mainly, however, because I don't think Evil Urges sucked.

it's certainly not their best work, and "highly suspicious" was horrendous, but apart from that I liked it and gave it its fair share of listens.

despite that, even if it did suck, i can't think of any band that has made an entire catalog of music without one hiccup. (i say, "even if it did suck", because Evil Urges received quite a bit of critical acclaim regardless of your personal opinion --- just look at where it ranks on their allmusic composite score. http://allmusic.com/artist/my-morning-jacket-p372298/discography )

Is allmusic's rating really a composite? I was under the impression that it's one person's opinion like most other reviews.

i thought it was (as in, only the star rating), but i could certainly be wrong.

But, just looking at the other ratings:

Rolling Stone, 4/5

Spin, 4.5/5

Allmusic, 4/5

EW, an "A" rating

AV Club, a "B" rating

Pitchfork gave it a 4.7/10 (LOL), and Drowned In Sound only a 6/10.

Allmusic is always listed with the other sources on an album's wikipedia page, so i'm pretty sure it's just one guy's opinion. Metacritic does a composite. It has a 67 there.

AllMusic's ratings are not aggregate scores. They're their own scores. But, yeah, what that guy said was dumb as shit.

^Haven't listened to it yet, but just finished watching that DBTs documentary The Secret to A Happy Ending. Fucking phenomenal. If you're already a fan, it'll make you an even bigger fan; if you're not a fan, it'll at least give you some respect for them. They really are the real deal. And it'll make you seriously reconsider preconceptions you might have about southern rock.

There's this one part where some professor is talking about the Mike Cooley-penned song "Uncle Frank," which is largely about the TVA and how they displaced the homes of many farmers and the ilk by taking more and more land; he points out that he had a graduate student who spent two years working on a thesis about the TVA, and Cooley does a much better job of describing its effects in three and a half minutes.

i saw them one time, but it was them and the hold steady at lincoln. the hold steady was so good that dbt's couldn't live up to it and they were ultimately pretty disappointing to me. they were co-headliners and they switched off on the tour who went first and who went second, bet i would've enjoyed the truckers a lot more if they were first that show.

but i just think those were the wrong circumstances in which to experience a drive-by truckers show. the point is, i can't wait to see them at hopscotch. i've oddly been on a big drive-by truckers kick since they got announced for the bill.
