And that Russel Wilson is actually really freaking good and a class act...unlike the other two. He's the face of the damn program and arguably the only reason TOB even has a job still

TOB is well on his way out now for sure.
His results have been disappointing to date and now he just forced out an All ACC player, possibly the best QB in the history of the University?
I mean when has anyone ever kicked a heisman candidate off the team because of butthurt feelings?
Things really can't get any worse for our football program.
Glennon already looks pretty blah, and he just got a hell of a lot of pressure added to his job.
Replacing a legend is never easy, especially when your coach kicks the legend off the team.
I cant believe we didnt show more respect for a guy who's beaten UNC three times and carried our team on his back the last three years. This is just unbelievable, if I had season tickets I'd probably quit buying them over this. 4/30/2011 12:29:09 AM |

damn...i hoped to only use my response at packpride because those people are fucking idiots...
I don't understand you folks that don't see this is completely Russell Wilson's decision.
Maybe not the actual asking for a release, but choosing to demand more time for baseball. Last year, not having his QB in camp had to kill TOB and he didn't want to do it again...especially when Wilson wanted to be away from the program even longer this time.
It's not just a matter of Wilson stepping in and being good, of course he can do that. There are 84 other players on a football team. Many of which are brand new and are learning a brand new system(hell, from what we hear the whole team is learning parts of a new system) and those guys DESERVE to learn that WITH the guy who will lead them.
Russell didn't want to be here for that, so we had to move on. This is not a surprise to me, shouldn't be for you. This decision was made awhile ago. We're at least giving him a release so he can go jump in the middle of a team that can afford to make that call(read: no other choice). 4/30/2011 2:37:18 AM |

Wilson has not even said he is considering playing football for another particular school. we gave him what any decent program would in giving him a release from his scholly and are allowing him to pursue what he thinks is best. why in the fucking hell are people so upset? this should not be a surprise.
Mike Glennon is the starting QB. Period. any decent program realizes that a "changing of the guard" so to speak is necessary to move forward. quit the hating. 4/30/2011 2:47:16 AM |

So, the performance you care about is for him to come and suck the team's dick, not football.
He did the same thing last year and he still beat Glennon. That's the performance non-fags care about. Football.
Fags care about loyalty tests and playing games with words to convince themselves that Wilson isn't the best QB in the ACC. This is a political decision and TOB is putting his own ego before the team's welfare.

^^considering the only real picture in your gallery is of 2 twins I know, I assume I either know you or could know you at some point so I will keep this simple...you're a fucking idiot.
Wilson chose baseball first. If he chose football first, he'd be our starting QB heading into the fall. Simple as that. If you feel like treating your own teammates w/ respect is as if you would "suck the team's dick" then it's easy to see why you feel so passionately about sports.
Wilson will likely remain the best QB in the ACC next year...the problem is, he won't be an ACC QB ever again. Not because he asked if he could be again and was told no. It's because he asked if he could show up in september and it was unacceptable. Something I agree with. Something I assume the other 84 scholarship players on the team agree with as they recently went though the things he skipped out on....again. 4/30/2011 3:15:06 AM |

Here is what likely happened:
RW called TOB and told him he was still going to come back to football and/or had decided to
TOB basically said, "thanks but no thanks, if you come back you will be 2nd string"
RW is a gamer and would not want to have the possibility of sitting on the bench, so he said, "ok, then release me so i can play somewhere else"
TOB said no problem and the rest is history.
watch him end up at oregon or somewhere with a nice spread offense 4/30/2011 7:17:05 AM |

I'm no expert in this situation but I do have some experience in leading/managing troops. Here is my opinion:
TOB's decision is the right thing. The offensive schemes with RW as QB is apparently much different than if MG as QB. Assuming that most programs start implementing their playbooks in the spring (to allow time for players to learn adjust and learn them)...it would a massive game of catch up (again) to readjust in the Fall if RW were to come back. I'd hate to be in TOB's situation if I HADN'T changed to accommodate MG and then RW left anyway...
Plus, how effective would RW be under the offensive setup used for MG? I don't know these things but I am pretty sure that moving forward is the smart/safest choice.
Also, we don't know all that goes on behind closed doors. What if MG told TOB that he'd leave if RW came back? Then we'd have RW for one year and a brand new QB to break in next year...Right now we have MG for 2 years while we can break in Burris or Taylor as backups.
I like investing in the long-term future.
BTW, I apologize for this post being all over the place!

Going to say the same things that have been said.
TOB has a football team to run. He needs a dedicated quarterback to lead the team. RW (who I think is awesome) has his own life to think about. If he loves playing baseball, it leaves little room for football (as indicated by him missing all of spring practice last year...which he didn't need anyway). But by letting him do that this year AGAIN would have spoken loads to the people who want the football team to succeed: Let's just wait for RW to make a decision and base our program on him and not move forward. That puts Mike Glennon in a bad spot, feeling like he is again living in RW's shadow and waiting for him to make a decision.
Why would anyone want to play at a school with that sort of fickleness?
They wouldn't. They would transfer.
And RW was in the position, so he asked TOB to let him go, "in case" he wanted to play football for a team who was okay with him coming in and playing for a year.
Any teams need a one-term quarterback? 4/30/2011 10:11:30 AM |

all I am saying is if he goes somewhere else and excels (I'm talking about if he landed at Auburn or LSU and was the SEC player of the year level), and Glennon flounders, TOB will look like a fool. The general public/national press wont care about the minute details of why he left, they will just see "TOB wouldnt allow him to do both, so he went somewhere that would accommodate him now hes kicking ass and doesnt NC State look foolish"
If he goes somewhere and doesnt do jackshit, no one will care. If he goes somewhere and kicks ass AND Glennon is the next Mallett, then it will be an interesting side note "oh, just think that NC State had both of these guys on the same roster!"

Sorry if this has been covered, but I couldn't disagree more.
These are high level college athletes. Almost all of these guys enter college believing they are good enough to play professionally someday. They are NOT going to hold against a guy like Russell Wilson his professional aspirations and it's certainly not "unacceptable" in my opinion.

This is why I like TOB more and more....he analyzes the situation and then makes the best decision for the PROGRAM. Once the decision is made, he sticks to his guns and makes shit happen.
This is also why TOB is a Head Football Coach who does MAKE things happen and why those who detract from him are just journalists who write about people who make things happen.4/30/2011 11:30:04 AM |

George Cox with a level-headed article on the RW stuff:
http://ncstate.raycomsports.com/blog/2011/04/30/wilson-nc-state-football-move-forward-in-classic-fashion-george-cox-of-nc-state-football/
Quote : | "It was time.
Quarterback Russell Wilson and North Carolina State football decided to move forward Friday as head coach Tom O’Brien granted the prolific ACC quarterback his release.
Wilson is under a professional baseball contract with the Colorado Rockies, who most likely will expect his unconditional commitment to improving his baseball skills. O’Brien and Wilson have had an understanding for awhile concerning the time commitment it would take to quarterback the Wolfpack in 2011.
Simply put, neither the Rockies or the Pack coaching staff would allow part-time participation this year.
The Rockies aren’t likely going to allow Wilson to leave professional baseball early for preseason football practice for either the Wolfpack or any other collegiate team.
Wilson can certainly keep his options open. But even if Wilson were allowed to particpate in pre-season football sessions, how many head coaches would allow a one-year quarterback to move in on players who had paid their dues in their systems?
Of course, Wilson could possibly give up baseball and then go on to a final year of eligibility somewhere. But that’s a long stretch at this time.
At this writing, his best shot at a professional career is on the baseball diamond — even though it might take three or four years of minor league preparation.
Wilson and O’Brien have nothing but admiration for each other. And Wilson says the Wolfpack fans are the best. The mutual move by both Wilson and O’Brien allows both parties to move forward with great anticipation of the future.
It also gives Michael Glennon the green light to take complete leadership of the offensive Wolfpack and finally show everyone his quarterbacking skills." |
