2. Two players haven’t popped out this season.
Nearly 650 times, Los Angeles Angels second baseman Howie Kendrick(notes) has swung and made contact. Not one of those balls lingered in the air before settling into an infielder’s glove.
Texas superutilityman Michael Young(notes) is at more than 750 contacts without a popout. Only twice in the past decade has a player qualified for the batting title and not popped out: Larry Bigbie in 2004 and Joey Votto(notes) in 2010.
It’s a staggering feat of skill mixed with a healthy dose of luck. The numbers back the skill part. Over the last six seasons, Young has popped out 21 times in 3,683 at-bats. Kendrick’s 2,350-at-bat career includes 11 popouts.
3. Votto’s ability to avoid popouts might be more impressive than Kendrick and Young’s.
The reigning National League MVP is following his perfect 2010 with a near-perfect 2011. He had the temerity to pop out once this year, giving him one in 1,010 at-bats over the last two seasons. It’s doubly noteworthy because Votto frequently drives the ball in the air, accumulating 130 extra-base hits during that span.
The king of popouts in 2011, Arizona Diamondbacks centerfielder Chris Young, has 38 in 472 at-bats. The player to whom Votto’s offensive numbers best match up, St. Louis Cardinals superstar Albert Pujols(notes), has popped out 13 times this season – a huge outlier. Pujols pops up more than the gopher at Bushwood Country Club: 261 in 6,186 at-bats.
Votto has 10 in 2,089 at-bats.] 8/26/2011 3:16:03 PM |

scared the ticket someone sells you will be fake? or by 'real' do you mean shiny w/ a picture on it, because that's how scalped tickets are a lot of the time
funny thing happened at the gate of a Cactus League game I went to....guy behind me apparently bought a ticket outside the stadium and didnt check the ticket, the one he got was for a game 2-3 days later, he was like "THAT COCKSUCKER SOLD ME THA WRAWNG TICKIT"8/26/2011 3:21:22 PM |

^^ Interesting read. Those guys are amazing to be able to stay on pitches like that.
Michael Young has had pretty damn stout career but nobody seems to notice. Wonder if he can keep it up for another 4-5 years if he'll get some HOF love. Got a slim chance to get to 3000 hits (he about to turn 35), has over a .300 career BA and has played the entire infield extremely well over the course of his career.
If nothing else he should definitely be around 2500 hits, .290ish BA, ~200 HRs, ~1300 RBIs and runs scored. Plus he had 5 straight seasons of 200+ hits. Playing in steriod era during some of his best seasons won't help. 8/26/2011 4:26:32 PM |

i've known guys to buy fake tickets from scalpers and to get counterfeit change from scalpers. in raleigh outside of a state game i'd buy from a scalper no problem, but i'm not going to fuck w/ scalpers hanging out in front of at&t park.8/26/2011 4:49:11 PM |

the whole thing
Quote : | "It sounds like a paradox, but the Giants' decision to demote Eric Surkamp to the minors after last night's game is actually a vote of confidence.
Manager Bruce Bochy said Surkamp will rejoin the rotation in San Diego on Sept. 6 but want him to make one start in the minors between now and then. Moreover, it's a sign that the Giants do not feel Surkamp will be a prospect who keeps going up and down from the minors to the majors. They are using one of his three option years to buy 10 days for someone else to be on the roster.
You only get three option years. The Giants must feel they won't need to use all of them.
As of this minute, the Giants have not decided where to send Surkamp, San Jose or Fresno. It's a logistical question.
Dan Runzler also was optioned, to Fresno, and will rejoin the Giants after 10 days. The two were optioned to clear roster spots for Andres Torres, who hit well during his rehab from a leg bruise, and Sergio Romo." |

Also the idea of expanding the MLB playoffs is dumb as hell. They should keep it at 4 teams per league and start the season earlier so that baseball is done before football kicks into high gear. 9/27/2011 6:56:31 AM |

i went to the astros/cards game last night, because i'm a baseball fan, the game had importance in the scheme of things, and i have a friend or two who are cardinal fans and wanted to go.
this was the lowest attended game of the four i went to in houston this year. ended up scalping tickets for $3 that included a hot dog / chips / soda combo. that was pretty sweet. ended up migrating to about the fourth row behind third. it was a very entertaining game.
the astros as a team and an organization are in a pretty sad state. 9/28/2011 4:36:33 PM |
