No one is doubting that this is a tough schedule, but he was brought here to elevate the program and you do that by beating good programs, not cupcakes. This article states why Yow hired him: http://www.gopack.com/news/2015/2/20/NC_State_Extends_Doeren_s_Contract_Through_2019.aspx
It also states that he had a contract extension until 2019. I'm not sure if there are any contingencies with that but I don't think Wolfpack Nation would be happy with a losing record. He has a lot of play makers so the season should be interesting if he can get the passing game and defense in check. 8/5/2016 11:13:01 AM |

I'm not an outright Doeren-hater. I hope he gets the job done, I really do. I just haven't seen anything promising from him yet and to be honest, I think he rode the coat tails of his predecessor at NIU. Still, he got to an Orange Bowl (albeit with inherited talent) so maybe there's hope. And I get that when he got here the cupboard was pretty bare. 8/5/2016 11:29:06 AM |

That's the thing, Doeren was a promising young coach and it was a lot of hype for him coming here. However, with an abysmal ACC record and losing to every single ranked opponent by at least double digits, I can start to see a trend. Hope Doeren and co turn things around this season but by looking at the 18-20 overall record and beating no ACC teams with a winning record its best to keep expectations at bay. 8/5/2016 11:43:14 AM |

I'm not trying to be "revisionist", but I don't remember any real hype surrounding his hire. Sure, it was recongized what he did at NIU, but I don't remember anybody being certain we were getting a "rising star".8/5/2016 1:44:48 PM |

haha all of our coaching searches in recent memory have been embarrassing
Gott turned out pretty well. I wish we had gotten a "fallen from grace" type of guy for FB too like Mike Leach.
we basically took the assistant to a good mid-major coach. you're supposed to either take the good mid-major head coach themself, or take an assistant from a good P5 program. 8/5/2016 2:02:59 PM |

I'm of full belief a place like NC State needs a gimmicky/nuts coach, like a Leach or Paul Johnson to make a serious mark in college football. The closest thing we've had was Chuck, not gimmicky from an Xs & O's standpoint..but c'mon that guy had national pundits like Herbstreit talking about NC State. Of course he didn't work out in the end, but that is as close as we ever came to really breaking through. 8/5/2016 2:22:16 PM |

well lets wait until after the season to determine if he was worth the hype or not. we had some really good recruiting classes now lets see what he can do without his hands being tied behind his back. let the season play out folks. Its like some of you have already judged hm based on what he did with tobs players. thats ridiculous. 8/5/2016 2:50:22 PM |

We could have another winless (conference) season and I'd still say give him a 5th year. Only trolls would disagree.

I just did a re-read of our head coaching history. Shit is pretty depressing.
Lou Holtz was our first HC to have a winning record (2 before him in ACC-era; multiple before that) then he left for the NFL.
Then we got Bo Rein who kicked ass but then left us for LSU. He died in a plane crash before ever coaching a game for them.
Then we had Monte Kiffin and Tom Reid, who both had losing records, although Monte managed to piss around the NFL for a little while despite that fact.
Then we had a lot of success under Dick Sheridan but he left us citing health and emotional concerns.
Then Mike O'Cain stepped up from QB coach who did ok, barely making a winning record (41-40) but got fired before Rivers could play for him.
Amato stepped up and ran the Rivers train up to the Gator Bowl. Then it was pretty much downhill from there.
Then TOB paced around and started as his feet for a few years and had middling, but consistent results despite having multiple players that would go on to be NFL stars.
And now we have Doeren.
It's been a wild ride for NC State Football. 8/5/2016 3:01:18 PM |

not really revisionist history at all
http://www.sbnation.com/college-football/2012/12/26/3804312/2012-2013-college-football-new-coaches-hired-grades
Quote : | "Dave Doeren is 23-4 as a college head coach. That alone suggests this hire should have probably gotten at least an A-, but I am a little hesitant in that regard.
For one, like Andersen, he has absolutely no ties to his new region; 14 of his 18 years as a coach have been spent in the Midwest. And unlike Andersen, we don't actually know what kind of program builder he is. He inherited an interesting squad from Jerry Kill when Kill left for Minnesota, and he won big with it. But in only spending two years there, we don't know what he might do with a full recruiting cycle of his own. This is a solid hire, but there are still some red flags." |
at best, that's cautious optimism. "solid hire" isn't exactly the same as "hype". HUGE difference.
it's a pointless argument...but there was hardly "hype" surrounding this hire. check the doeren credibility thread first few pages. it's mostly people saying "seems like a good hire, give him time" and shit like that. "hype" would imply that there was a big to-do surrounding his hiring and lofty expectations immediately...and there wasn't at all.
and for ^^^...i kinda disagree. we don't need a gimmicky coach. it's super cliche, but we need to recruit better. and recruit has gotten better under DD, but we're still in the bottom half of most P5 teams in recruiting rankings. look at this...
http://www.sbnation.com/college-football-recruiting/2015/2/6/7987571/recruiting-rankings-ratings-2015-college-football-teams
this is a year old, so not completely perfect, but we were 45th in 4 year recruiting rank. every team ranked ahead of us is P5...so that's 45 out of, what, 65 P5 teams? that's not all that good. and that was good for 8th in the ACC. doeren has improved recruiting...i'd guess our 4 year average has improved a few spots since he took over...it's better than TOB recruiting for sure. but it's still pretty dang mediocre. so with that in mind, i can see why somebody would want to resort to the gimmicky stuff. but if we recruited better, which isn't unrealistic, we can win more games. there's no real reason we shouldn't recruiting better than Vanderbilt, Virginia, Kentucky, etc in football recruiting.

the reason i'm a bit optimistic is because the few DD recruits we have seen, have been absurdly better than their rankings. Important skilled guys like Hines(wr), Dayes, and samuels have stepped onto the scene and played like blue chips right away.
This seems to have happened with enough guys early on to suggest a pattern. We will find out this year as the core of DD recruits who weren't ready to play the moment they stepped on to campus start to play this year, as they are replacing the TOB srs who played last year. If we can continue to field players that good at a similar rate...WATCH OUT.
We've seen that DD has been in it for the long haul and hasn't rushed young guys onto the field. This year is all or nothing and that itself is exciting. I'm just asking you guys to let what happens on the field determine his fate and not try to extrapolate his results based on shitty stuff that happened with TOB players. 8/5/2016 5:58:58 PM |

^dayes and samuels, definitely. hines was a high 4* and had offers from tons of major programs. not to downplay how good he was as a true freshman last year, but he did come in with high expectations.
Quote : | "If/when Doeren is successful here, he will jump to a bigger program. We are a stepping stone for him if he can get things turned around." |
maybe, maybe not. it's all conjecture. but had we won like 9 games by his second year and made the top 25, he'd have been a real hot name because it was so quick after his success at NIU...things probably kinda cool off the further he gets from that initial NIU success. there's always a newer up and comer. i don't have any delusions about us being a great football job and yeah, if he has us winning an ACC title bigger name teams will come calling. but teams probably won't be beating down the door if he just gets us to 8-4 territory, imo. so i guess it kinda depends what we call turning around the program

You mean the position he played out of necessity because every rb we had was injured? He was recruited as mainly a slot WR. With dayes, gallaspy and Fraser did you really think he was gonna see extended time at RB? He barely saw anytime in the backfield until dayes and Thornton went down. 8/7/2016 7:51:30 PM |

We don't need a lot of wide receivers in the offense we run. Most of our plays will be quick passes to slots and backs. Screens which are really run plays, quick passes. Occasional deep ball but that isn't the main idea m 8/7/2016 8:33:40 PM |
