yes, good deal but im not very familiar with Olympus. you might limit yourself on aftermarket lens purchases with this make but im not really sure

I've been having fun out lately with my new 430ex II and I've been going around shooting frogs calling at night lately. I'm still learning a lot, and I think I need to work on increasing the depth in my shots. I also need to watch out because I've been getting pollen all over my camera lately. Oh, and I know a lot of these shots (if not all) need some sort of cropping. That'll come later.

Anyway, some frogs. I'm taking it easy on you this time, Woodfoot.

Oh shit, did I say you were safe, Woodfoot? That was just from snakes. This giant gravid wolf spider was floating around on a pine cone, this may be the biggest one I've ever seen (nearly spanned the length of the pine cone, and it wasn't really even stretched out).

Many male frogs actually leave their vocal sacs extended even while they aren't actively calling that second. But I particularly sit and wait, for the most part, to actually capture the vocal sac fully inflated while the male calls. Many males deflate as you approach, some species spook more easily than others. So, in essence, photographing calling frogs takes a lot of slow stalking (patience), pinpointing (good eyes and ears), and waiting while being as still as possible for them to call again (more patience).

But really, If you go out after a nice hard rain this time of year (or in my case, after the most significant rainfall we've had in years), when frogs are looking to breed in the areas they are breeding (mostly somewhat temporary pools and Carolina bays), you'll have a hard time NOT finding frogs.

Oh, and I also found an endangered species of frog (Carolina Gopher Frog) in an area that hadn't been known before (on top of that, they have been listening for them for over 10 years there). It's only the 4th population known to the state of SC.

i don't think he was meaning to be a super-ass or anything. i think he just meant you've got some decent captures, but they need some work (specifically cropping). looking at them all back-to-back like that makes you realize all the subjects are right in the center of the photos and that gets boring.

Ok... if you think "you have some nice captures" comment was some shitty reaction... well then sir... whatever. I honestly think you got some winners in there and only reverberating what you said in your post that they could use some sort of cropping. At least you KNOW IT, plus most of them are technically good pics; properly exposed (a bit, some a little dark) and decent color balance.

If I compared them to Kiwi... then that's a shitty comment. Plz, no Kiwi croppage of those.

And yes, I do photograph more than just club shit. I shoot a lot of sports, models, PJ, and commercial stuff. I've shot almost every Canes game at home this season. I've been getting into art, abstract, landscape and nature stuff, but they are horrible. Like n00bish shit.

Also, what have you been using to diffuse the strobe? Bounce card?

works well on women too... as long as you sugar coat the criticism, say it in between compliments, not looking into their eye's (preferably with your back towards them and you bounce your voice off a wall), and two arms length away.

how do y'all feel about micro-4/3 cameras? i'm considering the panny GH1 (releasing next month), due largely in part to its 1080p recording capabilities, but also due to its DSLR-sized sensor (18x13.5mm and 2.43cm2 density versus the D90's 23.6x15.8mm and 3.72cm2), the ability to use additional lenses like a true DSLR (in addition to regular 4/3 lenses that olympus/panasonic/leica use, you can use the micro-4/3 ones using an adapter), and the fact that it's significantly smaller and lighter than canon/nikon entry-level DSLRs

the G1, which is available now for $650 with a 14-45mm lens, is the same as the GH1 except that it doesn't take video at all...also, i think the GH1 will ship with 14-140mm lens

^^^ It's been discussed before, but the four thirds system is interesting, but I think it's just a niche market of prosumer niches... If you travel a lot and need to save the space/weight, then its a good choice, but I'd rather have a real SLR optical viewfinder camera system. Personally, I'd be more interested in a camera based on the Foveon sensor.

I have the d40 and love it. Not sure about comparisons to Olympus techinically but if I recall correctly...I think the Nikon is better... though you'll need to ask one of the guy's for more info.

I've been working crazy hours with the Final Four and National Championship game. Not too much time to shoot, but I did take my camera with me to Franklin Street. We were posted up on top of Spanky's. They aren't great photos, but it was cool to be up there.

Alright, so this one I cropped. The snake took up nearly the entire frame in the original shot, so it was only slightly trimmed.

Putting this one out there for some constructive criticism. Is the cropping too tight, or is it alright? I'm also still learning to use my 430ex II, so I don't know if I'm firing the flash properly. Wasn't going for artsy on this one, more so going for a field guide type of shot (wide depth of field, whole animal with distinguishing characteristics included). So, that considered...what about it?

GIMP http://www.gimp.org/, it's pretty much exactly like Photoshop 7.0. All you really need to do with simple photo editing. Plus they have them avaliable on almost every kind of OS, linux, BSD, OSX, UNIX, etc...

^^ I have seen them in the woods before and like you said their pretty difficult to capture. For some reason shooting from a car causes animals to pause just a little longer vs being on foot. If I see something along the road I usually drive past it get my camera set up then pulll back along side it to get a few shots before they get out of dodge.
