alrighty. i did the restore, which since i followed the directions doesn't really completely wipe your phone it seems. it is better, but it is still draining faster than before. you sit there and watch the numbers click by, but the % drops several points while it's locked. i now have an appt at the apple genius bar for 730pm on friday night 12/9/2009 10:29:26 PM |

Quote : | "OK, you truly wild and crazy iPhone users.
You know who you are: the ones who check out every application, play every game, call up every piece of news and check out every restaurant within 100 miles.
You are causing AT&T (T) a big problem. You're swamping the system, and AT&T, which has an exclusive right to market the iPhone in the United States, wants you to get a life and dial back.
How AT&T plans to get you to cut back isn't quite clear, The Wall Street Journal said today. But they won't slap you around. They'll offer incentives.
AT&T's problem is a problem for everyone in the wireless industry: how to cope with exponential growth in the use of data services such as video and Internet browsing, which require more bandwidth.
The dilemma, the Journal noted, has been particularly acute for AT&T because of the millions of customers using Apple's (AAPL) iPhone, the iconic smart phone.
IPhone users so love their phones that they use them all the time. The problem is especially big in New York and San Francisco, two of the trendiest towns around.
The rate of broken calls and data feeds has grown so fast that Verizon Communications (VZ) has launched an ad campaign to get AT&T customers to switch.
The average iPhone user consumes five to seven times more data on a monthly basis than an average subscriber who mainly uses a handset for phone calls, research firm Sanford C. Bernstein says.
Even compared with the average smart-phone user on a high-speed network, iPhone owners use twice the amount of data.
So, iPhone user, you're too good a customer. And you cause an additional problem.
AT&T may have to invest more in network investments -- switching gear, cell-phone towers and the like -- because you like your iPhone so much. That may eat into AT&T's bottom line.
Result, Toni Sacconaghi, a Bernstein analyst, told the Journal: "The economics of the iPhone are not as rosy as they might first appear."
So, what incentives might AT&T offer? Sorry, they won't pay you not to use your phone.
But the options include instituting usage fees that charge customers based on how much data flow through the device.
Right now, you can get a calling plan from $40 to $100 a month for an iPhone -- plus $30 a month for unlimited data. The average iPhone users pays $95 a month for the service.
The telecom giant could also charge $5 to $20 a month for the right to send text messages.
It could -- gasp! -- slow down the data flowing to your iPhone if your usage is hurting other customers.
AT&T has tried reasoning, the Journal said. They've showed some users just how much data they use. Ralph de la Vega, who runs AT&T's wireless and consumer businesses, told the paper that most had no idea and cut back on their own.
The next question is whether AT&T will have to make an offer the iPhone user can't refuse." |

tech guy: "yeah, but we need to invest some of that money back into network upgrades since theyre going to use so much data"

Marketplace on NPR had a short piece on this Thursday saying that AT&T either has to charge people more for their data usage (which as an iPhone user is complete garbage considering we already pay them $30 a month) or drop their exclusivity to the iPhone. Now I am sure others will have their own ideas but my gut tells me that AT&T will do what's best for them rather than their customers. 12/11/2009 7:06:32 AM |

Quote : | "My sense of Verizon’s superiority is confirmed every time I see a “there’s a map for that” Verizon commercial, graphically showing how far more extensive Verizon’s 3G network coverage is in less populated areas. And it is reinforced when AT&T executives publicly confess — as Ralph de la Vega, the chief executive and president of AT&T mobility and consumer markets, did last week at an industry conference — that the company’s wireless service in New York and San Francisco was “below our standards.”
When I set about looking for independent data, however, to confirm the superior performance of Verizon’s network, I was astonished to discover that I had managed to get things exactly wrong. Despite the well-publicized problems in New York and San Francisco, AT&T seems to have the superior network nationwide.
And the iPhone itself may not be so great after all. Its design is contributing to performance problems." |

average speed of verizon 3g vs average speed of att edge?
Just pulled 70/70 on edge, 1000/250 on 3g, and 7/1mb on my 7/1 wireless network.

Because the majority of verizon's huge '3g' network is actually pretty slow. However not in a major area like Raleigh.

My point is 3g is one thing...edge is something else. Why not compare 3g to 3g if you want to know the differences in performance between the two carriers. Comparing 3g to edge is basically just comparing coverage since edge is more widely rolled out than 3g on AT&T.
Also, I have yet to not have data coverage on AT&T when i've had cellular coverage. It might be slow at times but it still works. This includes traveling to the west coast and up and down the east coast.

i'm comparing things because if I can pull down 100kb/s almost anywhere and 1mb/s in any metro area I'd spend time in, and verizon can only offer ~200kb/s in most of their "3G" areas and higher directly in some cities, and the areas with zero coverage are the same for both (in anywhere I'd travel, that is) then I'd prefer AT&T's setup for my personal use. I have pulled over 1.5mb/s regularly on 3G and that lets me get significantly better quality video w/out buffering problems than I can get with verizon out here on most devices. 12/14/2009 3:11:05 PM |

I think he's saying he'd rather have slow 3G than non-existent 3G (GPRS or no data), to which I'd have to agree depending on how fast the "slow" 3G is in my home city.
really this is a pretty personal decision, like what shampoo you use. I've had AT&T since it was Bell South, and yeah, their network sucks. I STILL get "CALL FAILED" dropped calls out of nowhere, way too often. Football games suck, going out of town, when all the verizon folks have coverage and I don't, sucks. The are holes all over the place...even in Raleigh...often in the low ground, and that sucks too. I still get dropped calls at tower transfers, which sucks (although that issue is getting somewhat better). I'm looking forward to a real competitor to the iPhone so I can jump ship ] 12/14/2009 9:48:35 PM |

^yeah i finally broke down and bought logmein. It's simply amazing. It's the best mobile remote software I've seen. One thing that makes it incredibly fluid is you don't actually move the mouse. You move the screen and the mouse pointer stays in the middle. So it's incredibly accurate and very fast (partially based upon your isp's upload).
I still think AT&T should combat Verizon by making an international roaming commercial and how much more common GSM is over CDMA around the world. Considering you can't use your Verizon phone unless you're traveling to Asia. Coverage is non-existent in Europe. 12/15/2009 5:17:02 PM |

I'll have to check out Jaadu VNC. Only problem is I don't want to run VNC and Logmein now. Trying to stick to one or the other, and logmein is much more versatile.
Yeah some iPhone users are crazy.
-Oh and i had a question for you guys. I just got back form the UK and iPhones are crazy cheap over there. You can get an iPhone with a 2 year contract for like 50 pounds or even free if it's the right contract. Plus the contracts are like 20-30 pounds/month for unlimited text and internet. I got a 30 day sim card for 15 pounds that had unlimited internet and texts and pay as you go minutes. How can they offer plans so cheap? How do they pay Apple for all those iPhones? I thought AT&T was just breaking even and they charge a lot.
v i'll check it out. Doesn't seem to have any features logmein doesn't. I can still use logmein on any computer whereas i'd have to download VNC software to run VNC each time i wanted to log in from a different computer.

I installed it and logged in using my facebook account (good that you don't have to create a Stalqer account) and it put all my friends positions on a map. It is kind of annoying though because people who don't have a location it just places randomly all over the globe. I have a few friends in Antarctica.
How does it take people's location from facebook? There an option somewhere in facebook to post where you are? Or is it tracking peoples ips when they log into facebook? 12/15/2009 7:42:34 PM |
