fyi...Carl Carey was one of Peppers' good friends at UNC (possibly in high school too, I dunno)...his occupation was a guidance counselor or some nice low-paying civic job...but when Pep got his big deals, he became his agent...I don't think its any kind of big deal as far as agents/runners/academic advisor ties...I think its just a stupid 75 IQ guy like Peppers hiring his buddy as his agent to get him paid too...anyways

Considering they will have a bowl ban next year I don't think it matters. In fact those players better live it up this year because it might be the very last bowl they are going to get to participate in. Quote : | "Appeals set this week for UNC's Ramsay, McAdoo
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. — North Carolina says the appeals for two players declared permanently ineligible amid the NCAA investigation into the football program are scheduled for this week.
Team spokesman Kevin Best says the appeal for defensive lineman Michael McAdoo is scheduled for Tuesday, while the appeal for fullback Devon Ramsay is Thursday.
The NCAA investigated agent-related benefits and academic misconduct, a probe that caused 14 players to miss at least one game. McAdoo was one of seven to sit the entire season, while Ramsay played the first four games before being held out the rest of the year.
The school hasn't released details in either case, though privacy laws would prevent it from discussing any player's involvement in the academic review.

I am trying to get that part straight.
There were allegations, and I assume solid evidence that Ramsay had his paper written or edited by the 'tutor'... and UNC deemed he did not have to go to the Honor Court?
WTF is that shit?
Not only that, but he plays in 4 games and the NCAA will not punish UNC for playing an ineligible player. And they still have the balls to appeal? 12/13/2010 5:06:36 PM |

The rumors are that when the tutor was let go by the university and off their payroll, she still wrote papers for players. Why, well it's obvious, but let's not look into that, the university already deemed she was "too close with the players." The NCAA has no jurisdiction to penalize players receiving help from joe schmoes off the street which is what she is considered once she is not employed by UNC (although Butch was paying her for his own kid, totally different crapstorm). The NCAA relies on the unversity to police itself there. The NCAA cannot get her to talk. Well, the NCAA can penalize the kids she wrote papers for while she was employed, in that they can tell her to talk or penalize the players, which they did. The others, well that's up to UNC, and we all saw them get Sturdivant and Carter out on the field just as quickly as they got word the NCAA couldn't touch them in time (not to mention Sturdivant's little pot possession, totally unrelated but fascinating nonetheless). It took them a week to get Draughn and Searcy on the field and hurdle the red tape, but pretty swift by Butch and Baddour to get it done, kudos there for such swift sleaziness. Williams and Burney had monetary issues, so they were out for that anyway, you'll never know if Williams was on the academic side, but hearing him talk smack and get beaten 4 years in a row by us, I'd strongly suggest academics aren't among his strong points. Burney and his father actually admitted publicly to Kendric committing an honor court violation. This at any other university gets you kicked out of school for a semester to plead guilty to an honor court violation. Let me say that again, Burney ADMITTED to an honor court violation and played this semester.
I'm guessing the NCAA saw how UNC handled Searcy, Draughn, Carter, Sturdivant and immediately axed any chance of Quinn, Little, and Austin from ever seeing a college field again. UNC was also very vague about Searcy and Draughn, that couldn't have sat well with the NCAA. It was all about on the same timeline. Ramsay and Mcadoo also got axed shortly after. I think UNC saw the writing on the wall and told Charlie Brown and Ryan Houston, see you next year, we have to let this die down this season, especially since their chances of winning the coastal at that point were mathematically like winning the lottery.
Quote : | "appeals process in a nutshell" |
The appeals process usually never gets overturned, but if it does happen, it's usually on a technicality. If the main facts stay the same, it's a one and a million. Masoli at Ole Miss from Oregon was a situation where he really wasn't deemed ineligible, he was just kicked out of school. I believe he also graduated from Oregon (crucial detail) and used the "I'm seeking a graduate degree in a program my undergraduate university doesn't offer." Translation: Houston Nutt calls the admissions office at Miss and tells them "We need to find a graduate degree that Oregon doesn't offer and sign this idiot criminal up for one not too difficult 3 hour course so I can get his --- out on the field this fall."
See also Juston Knox on UNC's hoops team. Graduated from Bama in 3 years, had one year of eligibility, and Roy makes a quick call, and it's done. Hauska, our old kicker, did this too. Obviously the latter guys didn't have issues with the law making it sleazy like with Masoli.

The NCAA needs to bitch slap these pricks. Their response should be:"You know what we looked into the situation and we decided that you needed to vacate the wins that occurred while you were playing Ramsey. You have any other "appeals" you want to make?" 12/13/2010 7:35:11 PM |

Today, I watched ESPN's 30 for 30 "Pony Exce$$" about when the NCAA gave SMU the death penalty.
Man that would be so great if it were to happen with UNCheat, but in reality I know they will get off easier than they should and I'll be disappointed. The death penalty put SMU in the dumps in football for 30 years, and they aren't exactly a powerhouse now... 12/15/2010 1:20:14 AM |

Pretty good article in the N&O today by DeCock
Quote : | "This bowl game is not for any of the 14 players who couldn't follow the simplest of NCAA, university and moral guidelines, crippling a potentially groundbreaking season before it ever got started. Some will play in the Music City Bowl on Dec. 30, having served their punishment, but it's their fault North Carolina never got the chance to play for the ACC title that seemed so possible a year ago.
And it is not for Butch Davis, who through deliberate action or inexcusable inaction allowed all of this to go on under his watch. That includes the relationship between now-suspended agent Gary Wichard and former assistant coach John Blake, Davis' old friend and new ex-employee, and the tutor at the center of the academic investigation, who continued to be employed in the Davis household even after the university cut her loose.
So it's off to the Music City Bowl, and for the players who have earned the right to play in a bowl, it's a deserved reward. The other gift this season has given them is a healthy case of what-might-have-been.

What I have come to love is the revisionist history that has become standard when talking about the UNC investigation. Their 2010 football team has gone from an upper-middle tier ACC team to an ACC title contender and (in some articles/blogs/message boards) a BCS championship darkhorse. 12/15/2010 10:12:54 AM |

There were a lot of pre-season publications that had them contending for the ACC title. And honestly, given the players that they lost and how well TJ Yates played this year, I see that prediction pretty much on point.
I think they definitely would have had a very good shot at winning our division...but probably would have struggled getting past VT in their own.12/15/2010 10:15:18 AM |

As fun as the death penalty sounds, UNC is way off of the travesty that was SMU. I finally got around to watching Pony Exce$$ and they were busted for paying recruits even while on probation several times for paying recruits. That said, their first round of violations was no tv games or bowl games for 1 year. I doubt that'll happen with all the money involved in broadcasting these days, but I'll hope for the best/worst. 12/15/2010 11:17:27 AM |

It's 11:25 am and that's the dumbest analogy I think I've read all year.
How many times do people say "if Team X was in the ACC instead of the SEC, they'd be in the championship game."
Same fucking thing. Our division was weak this year. FSU, Maryland, and NC State kept trying to hand each other the division. I mean, we should have won the division, but lost to an average Maryland team and shitty ECU and Clemson teams during the year. Our division winner actually lost to a depleted UNC team.
The Coastal division wasn't that strong, but they clearly had the best team in the league in VT. Replace one of the shitty Atlantic teams with a full-strength UNC team and they have a great shot at winning the division.12/15/2010 11:32:38 AM |

Ha...well this one is from computer rankings, which is pretty ridiculous, but has UNC going undefeated:
http://www.collegefootballpoll.com/analysis_acc.html
And looking up articles usually had VT, GT, then UNC in the Coastal...but it was compiled with UNC getting it's share of #1 votes, which meant some writers had them at the top of the Coastal division.
There were top 20 nationally in some preseason rankings...which is contending for a title in the ACC. With the exception of VT, most of the ACC teams were extremely overrated (and even Vtech might have been a little overrated considering some had them as a darkhorse national title contender). 12/15/2010 11:48:19 AM |
