I just played Avatar for about 5 minutes. That's about all I could take. It looks, feels and plays like a very mediocre Nintendo 64 platformer.

"Operation Chokehold: A Plan to Destroy AT&T This Friday
This "Apple memo" that appeared mysteriously on Fake Steve Jobs' site plans an all-out iPhone attack on AT&T's network this Friday, December 18 at noon Pacific:

Subject: Operation Chokehold
On Friday, December 18, at noon Pacific time, we will attempt to overwhelm the AT&T data network and bring it to its knees. The goal is to have every iPhone user (or as many as we can) turn on a data intensive app and run that app for one solid hour. Send the message to AT&T that we are sick of their substandard network and sick of their abusive comments. The idea is we'll create a digital flash mob. We're calling it in Operation Chokehold. Join us and speak truth to power!
You could join this flashmob to bring AT&T "to its knees," but from what I can tell, it's already there."

Quote :
"AT&T Dismisses Operation Chokehold as an "Irresponsible and Pointless Scheme"
We've told you about Operation Chokehold, the attack on AT&T's network scheduled for Friday, but now AT&T has something to say about as well. They're not exactly happy and throw around words like "irresponsible," "pointless," and "nothing amusing." Ouch!

This is what an AT&T spokesperson contacted by Cult of Mac said about the plot:

We understand that fakesteve.net is primarily a satirical forum, but there is nothing amusing about advocating that customers attempt to deliberately degrade service on a network that provides critical communications services for more than 80 million customers. We know that the vast majority of customers will see this action for what it is: an irresponsible and pointless scheme to draw attention to a blog.

I sincerely doubt that this statement will affect Operation Chokehold's attempt to make the AT&T network pee its panties as it runs crying to mama, but I suppose we'll see what happens this Friday. What are your guesses though? Will iPhone data start crawling at an even slower pace than usual?"

Either way, stuff like this happens, deliberately or not. One of the largest carriers in the nation should be able to handle it without problem though. And they can't. That's the real problem.

I guess i'm one of the lucky customers. Still haven't noticed a problem. After spending two weeks in the UK I was glad to get back. The 3g sucks over there (it's really slow) and I actually got dropped calls and areas of no signal when switching towers. Get none of that over here.

Anyone else tried out the bing app?

All I can say is

Looks gorgeous, silky smooth, love the search+image+suggestions, maps works well, voice search seems pretty good.

This is light years better than google's mobile app. And the fact that it loads webpages inline is a HUGE win for me. Just for that, it's replaced Safari on my bottom dock.

^^I don't see why you would replace safari though...i mean it doesn't seem to be a web browser replacement...just a search engine. Unless thats what you use your browser on your phone for more often than not.

^ I have three bookmarks in safari.

75%+ of my use in Safari is just to get to the google search box. Comparing google search in safari to bing search in the bing app is night and day. The things I look for on my phone (food, events, trivia, directions, businesses) are 1000 times easier to do now.

Just switched to beejive from nimbuzz. Totally worth it. Keeps you logged in for up to 7 days and doesn't have to reconnect every time you open the app. With the notifications it basically runs in the background, and when you click "view" from a notification the app opens instantly. Pretty neat.

They finally ported Halo to the iPhone.

For some reason they managed to steal everything except for the name though, so you have to search for N.O.V.A in order to find it. But it's pretty fun.

after reading this thread I decided to download the bing app

the image search results display is on point without a doubt

another app I downloaded today is called "Dragon Dictation"

allows you to speak text then automatically copies the text to easily send in a text message..plus its free definetly worth trying

I broke down and bought the us version of tomtom last weekend, tested it this week (i drive a lot) works great, I was quite surprised. Would be nice if it didn't exit out during phone calls though.

So my 3g hasn't been working since this morning. No matter what i do, reset, reset network settings, airplane mode on/off it will only show up full bars on edge. Anyone experienced this before? Hoping it's an at&t problem and not my phone. Might just be a dead area.

3G service in downtown Charlotte is really bad. I've reported it using the "mark the spot" app but who knows if that will help.

I just got my iPhone Saturday.

I've already got 56 apps on it. And I guess i should try bing as well. This thing has already taken over 90% of my internet usage.

It's beginning to make me feel a bit like Gollum. Is that normal in the first week?

I've just spent the last hour or so playing Smash Bros, Mario 64, and Mario Kart 64. On my iPhone. With a wii controller hooked up through bluetooth. At first I thought it would be gimmicky, but it actually is a lot of fun.

wow. how in the fuck does apple get of marketing the hell out of a cell phone that doesn't do half the shit that every other phone on the market does? Really? they just released MMS for the iPhone in June? My phone from five years ago has that. No video recorder until recently? My phone from five years ago does that. No voice recorder until recently? My phone from five years ago does that. No copy and paste until recently? My phone from five years ago does that. No voice commands? My mom's phone from five years ago does that.

I almost bought an iPhone, then I read a review. I was, needless to say, fucking shocked. Maybe Apple should spend less on marketing and more on product development.

my iphone has lots of voice commands...it's just a regular locked 3gs.

and welcome to last june/last year/a long time ago i guess. why you gettin so riled up about this now?

oh, and the reason it's done so well is that it does a shit ton of other things that your phone from 5 years ago and last week does not do.

funny how everyone thinks they're an expert on how Apple should be run.... last I checked, they have about $50 billion in the bank and their stock is up 120% since they announced the first iPhone

their first phone didn't have MMS. my phone from five years ago does. I hardly call that "revolutionizing the phone market." Sounds like THEY are catching up.

Quote :

OS 3.0 (introduced with the 3gs) was the first iPhone that supported it.

Quote :

mainly cause I was lookin for a new phone, and considered the iPhone, until I read about all the shit it doesn't do and didn't do up until recently that practically all other phones do.

Quote :

and yet it couldn't do the basic things that my phone could do? really? come on... No Flash Lite? Windows phones and and Palms do that... Hell, the some of the freebies do that. No digital zoom on the camera until the 3gs? My phone from five years ago had that. No external memory slot still... what is revolutionary about a phone that doesn't do half the shit that every other phone on the market does?

well it can now, so what's your problem.

And the surges in iPhone sales after each version has been released indicates that people who cannot live without certain features (MMS, GPS) have simply waited until a version comes out that suits their needs. The current 3GS models obviously have enough features to satisfy a lot of people.
