As loathe as I am to agree with aaronburro, overall user experience doesn't mean shit if the phone doesn't have a certain feature.

For example, the pretty UI doesn't make up for the fact that I can't start typing an e-mail and then attach a picture to that same e-mail.

There's still no digital zoom on the camera. Just the ability to point and have it focus on that spot.

The biggest issue with the iPhone is that, ultimately, it's always going to be an Apple product.

my problem is them getting up and advertising how great it is compared to everything else when everything else has been doing what it does and more from day 1. Like I said, stop spending so much money on advertising and spend some money on development.

So when you jailbroke your iPhone, was the just to steal Apps or was it because the iPhone lacked functionality that Apple in some way, shape, or form decided you either shouldn't have or that you wouldn't need even though the iPhone (from a hardware point of view) is perfectly capable of doing so?

And to clarify, I'm not saying "hey, the hardware's capable of doing it so it has to do everything", but there are a ton of mundane, basic things the iPhone just doesn't do for no rhyme or reason and, in some cases, won't even allow an App to be made and put on the App Store that does it. It just comes off as horribly stubborn in the "our mice only need one button" way.

well there is a way to sent a photo via email, and i actually never noticed that you couldn't attach from the mail app itself. that is odd, but i've never had an issue with that.

zoom and flash would be nice. if i had to pick, i'd rather have flash. there are lots of apps that include digital zoom, image stabilization, etc. like el nacho pointed out. if i really need a nice pic of something, i use my nice actual digital camera. i haven't seen a phone yet that has all the same features/abilities to adjust the image or whatever. i don't really believe in having my phone replace my camera, but that's me.

if you're just now looking at buying a phone, why the hell does it matter what previous generations didn't have? did you check out what the previous gens of blackberries or winmo phones didn't have too? my moto q9m didn't copy/paste, didn't have access to 1000s of apps, was really difficult to play games on, and took shitty pics even though it had a flash and zoom. it displayed websites horribly. they added copy/paste with the q9c, but it was still nothing compared to the iphone. your excuse for just now getting riled up over this is retarded. who cares what it didn't used to do? IT DOESN'T MATTER WHAT IT DIDN'T DO FROM DAY ONE.

blackberries didn't have touchscreens from day one.

What's everyone complaining about now? You can email a photo of you're typing and email and decide you wish to attach something. It's called copy paste. You don't have to have started the email through the "email photo" option.

you're right and the problem is that people (not everyone) choose to hate on apple and their products for the simple fact that it's 'Apple'

yea this is either trolling or the stupid argument i've ever heard

OMG I CAN'T MMS!!1! how many fucking times a day do you MMS anyways? not to mention you can just email the god damn pictures to someone's phone number with @mms.att.net or whatever on the end of it and it works just fucking fine.

and the copy/paste functionality was utter bullshit on all other phones i've used. i'd rather it not be there than be so shitty as some of what i've dealt with..apple got it right and that's why they waited.

still wish they'd do something about the calendar reminder system...

Quote :
"i wonder why apple made their appointment alert times static...the only options are:

5 mins before
15 mins before
30 mins before
1 hour before
2 hours before
1 day before
2 days before
on day of event

whats so hard about letting us set our own alert times?"

and all day events pop up at 12am, and the actual reminder popups don't force you to click 'accept' them, so it's pretty easy to mis-tap and completely miss it.

Doesn't justify why there's not an "Attach" button. Would you not agree that having to leave the mail app to grab a picture to attach (and god forbid if you wanted to add multiples) is silly?

Not to mention that fact that you absolutely cannot create a photo folder using just the normal phone itself. In order to separate your photos in your "Camera Roll" off the giant list it becomes you have to sync it to a computer, move the photos on the computer into folders (maybe it's different if it's a Mac), and then resync them back to the phone.

Oh, and when you save pictures off the internet -- bam, Camera Roll. No rhyme or reason to that one, but that's where they go. If you wanted to save an animated GIF, I hope you enjoyed the first frame, because that's all that saves. If you want to e-mail photos off your phone, you can do 5 at a time. That's it, that's all.

We can throw in the (admittedly nitpicky) fact that the main way to get to the Camera Roll is to click the button labeled "Photos", despite the fact that the camera takes and places your videos in there as well.

Like I said, it's annoying, dumb, mundane shit that will never change.

I was bitching about their marketing campaign, which has gone on much longer than when I was simply looking for a phone. Plus, someone touted the iPhone as "revolutionary," despite the fact that it lacked features when it came out that every other phone on the market already had.

It's funny that all the Features apple added in 3.0 that people were having a hissy fit about like copy/paste and mms...Ive barely used. I of course played around with them when they first added it but haven't really used it much since then. I've owned plenty of SE phones that had 2.0MP cameras and mms but never once used it. It's nice to have but not really necessary. The only reason people made a big deal about the lack of these features is again it's Apple and that's just what you're supposed to hate on.

I admit, I was one of the hate on apple because it's apple and then I actually used an apple product and realized how stupid it was to hate on apple.

In the end of the day, it's a phone.

I used to send a decent amount of MMS with my SE phone just because on the normal AT&T plans there's no price difference between an SMS and an MMS. Of course, once I switched to the iPhone that went out the window, so it was text only. Sure, I can send them now, but it's become to ingrained to just attach it to an e-mail that it's a complete afterthought.

I don't think the MMS backlash would've been as bad if it weren't for the completely asinine way that MMS was handled by the iPhone. It left such a sour taste.

this is how it's handled by ATT for any phone without MMS. It wasn't an iPhone feature.

Also for as long as I've been with ATT, since the bellsouth days, mms was always priced differently than SMS which is one reason I never sent them with any of my previous phones. Now with the iPhone it's included with the same price for my txt package so I could start sending them all the time but I'd rather just upload them to my online album, facebook or email which all 3 can be done on the phone.

I'm thinking about getting an iPhone when my upgrade comes around in Feb. I've heard that Verizon might possibly get the iPhone sometime next year when AT&T loses exclusivity. Do you guys think its worth waiting to see if this happens and go for it, or just get an iPhone or some other smart phone when I can in February.

The MMS backlash was so bad because it's an incredibly basic (and useful although I'm sure some people will argue that) feature that almost every other 99 cent phone on the market managed to implement and it took Apple 2 years to work it into the supposedly state of the art iPhone, which would just be ridiculously hilarious if it hadn't been so frustrating. I've owned an iPhone since the day the first one came out but I'm not a blind apologist for the phone like some people on here are, it has its faults and the whole MMS, copy/paste fiasco was absurd but it's still the best phone on the market.

you're crazy right? 20,000+ apps, and nearly every carrier has at least 2 phones ALREADY with more Android phones on the way. jumping the gun? i think not. voice-activated search & GPS integration with Google Maps? It's sick. iPhone is old hat. people have an option that doesn't involve AT&T, they'll switch and FORCE Apple to drop exclusivity w/ AT&T

Android is good. But despite all the iPhones faults none of the android phones have it beat yet, when that happens I'll gladly switch.

And I know there are persistent rumors, but I'll be really surprised if apple actually releases a CDMA iPhone.

Apple has an exclusivity contract. Considering some of their public statements, it’s clear they want to drop ATT but it wouldn’t be viable for them to do so.

Nothing will force them to drop ATT before the end of the contract.

And the Android is going to put up a fight, but the iPhone is too entrenched at this point as an icon to be unseated on the basis of features alone.

Droids marketing is excellent, but not really enough, and Droid has some great features, but not enough to unseat the iPhone.

I think good support for this opinion is the iPod market… the iPod has had less features for years now than competing players, but no other player has the name recognition the iPod does.

The only way the Droid can kill the iPod is to be obviously and blatantly better, and it’s not. At best, it’s marginally better.

They've been the same price for the ~3 years I've been on AT&T. Or well, by "same price" I mean that you got 500 messages -- whether they be SMS, MMS, AIM, etc.

"Nokia continues legal assault on Apple, files suit with ITC to ban Apple imports
by Andrew Munchbach on January 4th, 2010 at 1:39pm
Filed under: Apple, News, Nokia 10 Comments

Back in October we told you about Nokia filing suit against Apple over the iPhone, claiming that Apple’s mobile offering violated Nokia patents pertaining to GSM, UMTS and wireless LAN (WLAN) standards. Perhaps some legal posturing, we thought; a public and principled shot across the bow aimed at the Cupertino based tech company? Apparently not, as Nokia has taken off the gloves. In a December 29th filing with the International Trade Commission, Nokia seeks an immediate injunction that would ban the import of anything with a camera and an Apple logo on it: iPhones, iPod Touches, iMacs, Macbooks – you get the idea. The suit claims Apple is violating Nokia patents in its use of a combined camera chip which keeps the size and power usage of devices down, a voltage controlled oscillator (VOC) that “increases the efficiency of the wireless device and uses less power than traditional VCOs, thereby increasing battery life,” and the sensor technology used in the iPhone that turns the screen off when it is within proximity of your face to prevent accidental input. We’re not sure if Nokia’s strategy is a sound one, but we’ll stay on top of this one as the filings continue to mount."

^If you have your phone set to anything besides the maximum brightness (like you should) then that won't give you the brightest light. I mean it's better than nothing, but...

I have the flashlight widget set as my second cydget on the lock screen, so when my phone is locked, all I need to do is hit the home button two times and I get the all white screen at the maximum brightness of the phone. Personally, I think that's the best/most accessible flashlight setup.
