after the tOSU penalty, I think they skate on this. Clearly the NCAA doesn't give a fuck

Thats pretty stupid. All I have heard is the OSU players were selling some of their shit that they were awarded. They were not consorting with agents, cheating, and didn't have an assistant coach who was receiving money and in constant contact with an agent.

Auburn: NCAA investigates, rules Newton eligible, all done in like a week
tOSU: NCAA investigates, suspends 5 players for 5 games, done within a week or so to my knowledge

UNC: NCAA investigates...suspends some players for the whole year...some for limited games...still not done

[Edited on December 23, 2010 at 9:59 PM. Reason : if the NCAA was going to give UNC a slap on the wrist, why haven't they done it yet]

well, if the punishment we got for players selling shoes and tickets is at all relevant, I'd love to see how

My understanding was that the NCAA didn't hand down any penalties (or they were relatively minor) in the end and that Valvano only got ran off (and shitty penalties self-imposed) because of the UNC powered media and pressure from the politicians in charge of the UNC system.

This has renewed my "hope" in a severe penalty for UNC.

you can't seriously think that's going to happen

they disqualified players, they have receipts of current and former players using credit cards issued through an agency for which the ASSOCIATE HEAD COACH was on retainer

the NFL has already suspended the agent -- do not fret, wolfpack, UNC is going to get fucked

[Edited on December 24, 2010 at 10:27 AM. Reason : not to mention academic infractions, which the NCAA really doesn't have control over]

yeah, and how did those academic infractions work out? those guys were kicked out of school like any other student, right? oh, and they aren't being redshirted, right? come on, UNC is gonna skate, and tOSU and Auburn are the proof

if they were going to skate they would have announced an end to any investigation

a letter is coming from the NCAA, I know it's fun to be hyperbolic and whatnot, but if it was over, we would know, not just be guessing.

Interesting statement from the NCAA released yesterday or today
Quote :
"NCAA statement on fairness of rules decisions

Several media and others recently concluded that very different situations involving student-athlete eligibility should be considered independent of their unique circumstances or interpreted with a "one size fits all" approach.

In particular, they are comparing recent decisions involving The Ohio State University and Auburn University (and others). Some have even suggested the NCAA plays favorites in these types of situations based in part or in whole on financial considerations.

Nothing could be farther from the truth.

In relation to the decision last week involving rules violations with football student-athletes at Ohio State, several current student-athletes were interviewed as part of our fact-gathering process. They indicated they were not aware there was a violation and learned of the issue based on later rules education, which was confirmed by OSU through interviews and supporting documentation.

Inadequate rules education is often cited in student-athlete reinstatement and other waiver cases (such as inaccurate or misguided academic advising), but it is just one of many factors considered in these types of situations.

As for the broader issue of a student escaping penalties based on their lack of knowledge, there also have been reports in the media that the recent ruling related to Cam Newton's eligibility will encourage parents or third-parties to solicit benefits or money during the recruiting process while keeping the student in the dark as to their activities.

Again, this strays from the truth.

While efforts are being championed by NCAA President Mark Emmert to further clarify and strengthen recruiting and amateurism rules when benefits or money are solicited (but not received), current NCAA rules would be violated and students declared ineligible should a parent or third party receive benefits or money, regardless of the student's knowledge.

Put simply, had Cam Newton's father or a third party actually received money or benefits for his recruitment, Cam Newton would have been declared ineligible regardless of his lack of knowledge.

There have been questions as well since last week related to the withholding policy and student-athlete reinstatement for NCAA championships and bowl games. This policy was developed and implemented by the Division I membership, specifically the Division I Committee on Student-Athlete Reinstatement and approved by the Division I Academics/Eligibility/Compliance Cabinet, in 2004. It allows for suspending a reinstatement condition in specific instances involving NCAA championships or bowl games. It recognizes the unique opportunity these events provide at the end of a season, and they are evaluated differently from a withholding perspective for student-athlete reinstatement. In the Ohio State situation, the facts are consistent with the established policy.

Finally, the notion that the NCAA is selective with its eligibility decisions and rules enforcement is another myth with no basis in fact. Money is not a motivator or factor as to why one school would get a particular decision versus another. Any insinuation that revenue from bowl games in particular would influence NCAA decisions is absurd, because schools and conferences receive that revenue, not the NCAA."

The best part is how on IC they believe they are being unfairly targeted and i kind of agreed TO A SLIVER on an extent but that's because I thought (or at least it was proven) that the Right Reverend Newton had received $$$.

the fun part about this is how fucking stupid some of the media people are

watching the Lou Holtzhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh half time comedy extravaganza during the game yesterday, it became apparent that no one at ESPN does research anymore. The fact that there were already rules in place and this very situation had been hashed out by the NCAA was completely ignored.

basically those idiots sit behind a desk spout un/under-informed opinions on shit to cater to the lowest common denominator

ESPN is like the Fox News of the sports world

^ seriously, who is the other dude, i forgot his name, Mark Mays? He said something like: "if this had been Arkansas and Ryan Mallet he would be sitting for sure, the NCAA has favorites."

What a tool how that guys looks now. I knew there was more to all this.

Greg Barnes(IC) was on Taylor Zs show this morning and said he has two inside sources in the NCAA offices that said they will only get a slap on the wrist. No bowl bans and probably no scholarship reductions. Which to me sounds more like a slap on the back.

The NCAA case against UNC hasn't even progressed to the point where any punishments would be determined. It's like a year away from that point.

So firstly, the NCAA doesn't leak shit, especially when it's already been brought up that a former UNC-player is on the NCAA investigations staff. If they didn't have it locked down already (they do) they do now.

And secondly, there's no punishments to leak.

Greg Barnes MAY be right, but up to this point, not only has he been wrong, but in some cases he's looked like pure stupid on quite a few stories they ran over there..

Remeber how he said something like he had a source that said everything would be decided on the coming friday and it was extremely minor; so that friday came and went only for the next week to have the first inklings of the serious stuff to come out maybe even a suspension or two if i remember correctly.

the fans on IC think based on tOSU's situation, guys like Austin, Little, and Quinn should be able to play in the bowl game tonight, and that UNC needs to take a stand against the NCAA and play them

"UNC Tar Heel Coaches Worked Blue In Press Box
Posted by Brooks on Dec. 31, 2010, 4:49pm
Thursday Tennessee pulled off a somewhat impossible loss to North Carolina after the Tar Heels turned a botched final drive into a 30-27 overtime victory.

(Blessed with an unlikely victory, Carolina coaches were less than gracious)
Considering the circumstances, you could perhaps understand obscenities emanating from inside the Volunteer locker room.
But an off-color mocking of the Tennessee fight song from press box-ensconced Carolina coaching staff members within earshot of the credentialed media? Hard to believe a coaching staff could be that classless, especially after the Tar Heels MVP was arguably the Big Ten officiating crew referee, Dennis Lipski.
But that’s exactly what AOL Fanhouse reporter Clay Travis reported took place after the game.
From a postgame autopsy offered up by Travis today:

As Tennessee fans rained down bottles and other paraphernalia on the officials leaving the field, North Carolina’s coaching staff exploded out of the coaches booth screaming along in tune to Rocky Top: “Sloppy Top, Sloppy Top, you’ll always be a**holes to me!“
While Travis didn’t identify those UNC’s “screaming” staff members, the official Univ. of North Carolina pregame notes (pdf) identified offensive coordinator John Shoop, tight ends coach Allen Mogridge, defensive coordinator Everett Withers and graduate assistants Jerod Powers and Chris Van Horn as manning the Tar Heel coaches booth.
The UNC coaches can do whatever they damn well please within the confines of their locker room, but is it too much to ask for a modicum of professionalism while representing the school in public view?
