I just noticed I have dust and swirl marks on my sensor... only noticeable at f/16 and smaller.

I think anyone who has changed a lens more than 3 times is going to have dust. Peace camera used to clean sensors for cheap.

As for the macro shots they're pretty freaking awesome. Did you focus stack?

nah, it depends on your environment and how you change the lens. I've changed the lens on my 30d a few dozen times before I started to see an effect, plus I usually use the blower or butterfly brush every so often. If it's bad, wet wipe it is. It just sucks have all three sensor formats.

For telephoto enthusiasts — nature and sports photographers, birdwatchers, stalkers — this is the Canon holy grail. Unfortunately, like most holy grails of photography, it costs a mint due to being an extremely limited edition. “More than twelve, less than twenty” is the official count, as they were only made to order starting back in ‘93.


That’s an uncropped (resized, obviously) photo of stuff probably almost 2 miles away. The lens is sharp, too (as it better be for a hundred grand); you can see more pictures in the newsletter. Bonus: if you have a cropped-FOV camera like a Rebel XSi, it becomes nearly 2000mm due to the 1.6x focal length modifier.

Anyhow, I doubt anybody reading this is going to lay out three years’ rent for a single lens, but it’s nice to know it’s out there.

No. I just bought an old U-Haul truck and converted it to living space. It's a nice one though....26' box, solar panels on the roof, gas generator to run the A/C, and furniture from Ambiente.

I was looking around for a new lens, and I came across the Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 II. I haven't heard much about this lens besides the review that I linked above. I don't really know what I would be shooting with this lens besides portraits but I thought it'd be nice one where I can get a shallow depth of field. I thought I couldn't go to wrong getting a decent lens for $90. Thoughts/suggestions?

I've got it. I like it. It's fast. It's pretty sharp. Decent bokeh; good for portraits. Dirt cheap. Would recommend.

^^I have it too, and I agree with d7freestyler - I find that it takes pretty good low light shots.

It really is a pretty good lens for the price. The only real difference between the 1.8 and the 1.4 is the built quality and different AF system, which really isn't much of a hindrance. Both are tack sharp and in some instances, I kinda like the Bokeh of the 1.8 a bit more. I still don't know any reason why anyone should get the 1.2 L version. It costs a lot, not much bang for the buck, and a lot of reports of bad AF or soft images (or was that the 1.0 version?).

i believe leica has f/0.95 of 50mm. it is the widest lens ever made i think.

Why would you shoot at iso 3200? What was your shutter speed?

Yeah...that's a touch high. I would imagine at that wide of an angle, you could shoot pretty slow and still get a nice, crisp shot without adding some noise. Though the shot doesn't look noisy at this size.

Yeah, even if it was WAY dark you could have knocked it down to f/4.5 and it still would have been sharp. Unless you were shooting with a 5D MKII, I would always avoid shooting at 3200. Even on my 40D I try and avoid going above 800 if possible.


But ^ is right, it doesn't look noisy at this size. I just thought the shot info was curious.

I didn't have a tripod and it was pitch dark 10pm outside. Picture is very grainy at full resolution, but decent at lower resolutions.

shutter speed was 0.3 sec.

I'm still learning...

They do, but I was mainly talking about Canon normal lenses. And no, it's not the fastest lens ever made, there have been some insanely fast ones made for the movie industry years ago. Canon even had their own f/0.95 50mm lens too.

^^ Nope, pretty much have to buy either used or at MSRP. And not that many used 5D mkII's on the market... Even now, they are still back ordered by about 2 weeks at most large camera stores. I think Best Buy might have some, they tend to surprise photographers that they even sell it. I had to wait about a month to get mine.
