I just finished watching the Netherlands v Brazil game, which I had recorded but not yet seen. I watched with my father, a proud soccer hater. I didn't have much to say for the "beautiful game". The match was an absolute disgrace.

i think the "beautiful game" moniker sets up unrealistic expectations for people new to the game. some games will be amazing, some will be ugly, and many will be a little bit of both.

I'm talking about all of the carrying on by the players DURING the game. Every touch precipitated a flop and acting as if a dismemberment had occurred, which was them met with finger wagging and chest bumping toward every player who took a tumble, followed by wild gesticulations and moaning to the referee, who was culpable, himself, for not putting an end to this nonsense from the beginning. This happened on every single change of possession. A game played in this way and on this stage by two of the supposedly top teams in the world does nothing but give ammunition to those who dismiss soccer as a classless, corrupt game played by whiny, bitchy little girls.
