I never got the Billy Donovan rumors. He didn't take the Magic's money. We sure can't pay NBA money. Exactly what do we have that's going to take him from Florida? 4/4/2011 8:55:22 PM |

I hope Yow has something up her sleeve. The rapid fire declarations of coaches staying today sure smelled that way, of course the other possibility is search has fallen apart.
If we get a decent coach, PLEASE schedule VCU at the RBC Center, and I hope the students give Gary Williams 2 hours of misery when Maryland comes to town. 4/4/2011 8:56:17 PM |

Look some third world country school like VCU issues a press release and we take it as fact? Please.
Waka Shaka Flame is not getting 2 fucking million dollars because they beat some teams in the tournament. Thats just not how it goes.
Way too unproven, way too young. I just find it hard to believe we offered 2 million and i find it even harder to believe he turned it down.
I can see Cronin turning it down as Cincy is a decent program albeit terrible facilities. Shaka I could see just making an emotional decision because of the ride he jsut went on and regretting it later maybe. But Marshall? That doesnt make any sense. He knows how few cracks you get in this game and he's getting old. No way he turns down millions and a premeire coaching job after he's paid his dues. No fucking way the combination of all three turn it down.
Step into reality. Step into Billy "Deez Knutes" Donovan. 4/4/2011 8:57:42 PM |

To be totally honest I wouldn't have paid $2+ million for Smart. If he fails then you're set back even further due to financial constraints. Sure, we could end up with some C list coach now, but at least if he fails then we can look forward to another hope killing, roller coaster ride of a coaching search and still have all money Debbie Yow can put together to throw at another list of coaches that we won't get. 4/4/2011 8:57:43 PM |

maybe I shouldve phrased it as, would the media consider them to be a homerun hire? I'm just trying to fill in the blanks in all of these reports that we are "in good hands" and have someone up our sleeve. Everyone is stuck on Miller, Donovan, Barnes, Shaka, Stevens as the top candidates, I'm trying to think outside of the box a little 4/4/2011 9:07:12 PM |

Quote : | "Man, as bad as i want to be I just can't be as optimistic as some of you guys. I think Dr Yow really thought Smart would accept our offer. Marshall was our primary backup and saw the very public rejection from Smart. He didnt want to play second fiddle to a newcomer like Smart and pulled his name. Cronin may have been the last backup and decided it was better he stay. Now DY is scrambling to find someone suitable. I hope I'm wrong." |

I would bet my life that Debbie Yow already has a signed contract from our next head coach and she will reveal the contract at the press conference by unveiling a seemingly innocent empty piece of 8.5" by 11" printer paper.
At that point she will uncrack one of these limited edition decoder pens and start doing a scratching motion on the paper until it reveals the identity of our next basketball coach (likely a man named Billy Donovan) in grand fashion.
There is a reason they still refer to her Debbie "Decoder" Yow in the town of Waterloo, Michigan.

you are nuts. marshall is a terrific coach. Now if Donovan is still on the table then marshall is an afterthought. But if we are still talking to Duquesne's head coach Ron Everhart like all my sources say then Marshall would be a great hire. 4/4/2011 9:21:51 PM |

I am writing to share with you the status of the search for our new head coach for men's basketball. There have been telephone conversations with successful coaches that did not develop into meetings -- sometimes because we did not wish to pursue those coaches further and sometimes because the coach involved is happy where he is.
The conversations have been candid. We have not tried to sugarcoat the challenge of rebuilding our basketball program. Our absence for 5 consecutive years from the NCAA Tournament was noted by each coach as evidence that the program is in poor shape and will require a special effort to rebuild.
Finding a coach with the fight and fire to do this job has been a challenge. That said, we will find an excellent college coach who shares the vision of what State Basketball can become and is up for the challenge.
I realize there are multiple rumors surfacing about the nature of the search on websites and in newspapers. Once our new coach is hired, I will be in a position to bring perspective to a number of those rumors. But, right now, we need to remain focused on finding a talented collegiate coach who is a fighter, full of confidence and appreciation for the opportunity to lead our basketball program back to national prominence.
That will happen in spite of those who believe this cannot occur.
Wolfpack Basketball is destined for a revival. We will accept no less. Please keep the faith while we continue the search. Your emails and text messages of support have meant everything to me. I am blessed to be your AD.

hire Steve Fisher. Win some games and make a tournament run over the next few years. Let fisher retire and we repeat this process in a few years. If we win games we WILL be able to get an upper tier coach 5 or so years from now 4/4/2011 9:32:56 PM |
