FS: 86 Honda VF500 Interceptor

So I have told myself I was selling this for the past 4 yrs, only to not be able to let go. But now it is time I have owned it since '94

It is a 86 V4 500, 17k miles, red, white and blue ( what other color would a rice burner be?) It has a new front tire, as in no mileage, a rear tire with about 100 miles on it, new chain, new plugs, new battery, and all new fluids(actually I should say it will as I am doing them all this weekend)

The bad, well there is really very little. It has been laid down once, by yours truely. It did very little damage scratched up some of the plastics and a little on the motor.

This is a great first bike, or forever bike. It is more like a sport crusier than a pocket rocket. The V4 is a great engine, much better torque than any of the I4's.

Will post pics up this weekend, after I wash it

$1250

Selling a 1979 Honda CX500. Great classic bike. The exterior shows some age but it has a brand new paint job. Also:
New Battery
Rebuilt engine
New rear tire
Clutch and rear end have been checked and look great
Carbs have been cleaned

Good starter bike and classic. Will post pics soon, burnt orange color. The enigine was just rebuilt and will be a putting a few miles on bike to make sure every thing is fine tuned. $1250

"there are a bunch on craigslist, dirtbikes are fairly tame so I don't think you'll have the same issues with getting a bike thats "too big" to learn on like you would with a street bike. they're air cooled, low compression (relatively), and don't rev all that high."

125-250 is a good starting range but if you get a peppy 2-stroke (no matter what displacement) watch out for the power band. Until you get used to the way the engine runs and the way your bike handles try to avoid full throttle (or near to it) cuz when 2 stroke engines start making power its a pretty sudden jolt from pokey to fire-breathing madness. If you are going straight it'll likely wheelie (my '79 suzuki 175 will pull the wheel up in 3rd gear even) and if you are turning it'll wheelie crooked (not fun) or you'll lose the back end (also not fun if you arent expecting it).

gauging interest on my 1990 GS500:
14xxx miles on the body 54xx miles on the motor
red and black
laid down by yours truly but very minimal damage, new headlight ordered. no scratches in the paint from it (went down in grass).
clean title, great to learn on, 50+mpg riding hard ON 87!
$1500 as-is (completely rideable and will come with new headlight)
$1700 with the new lens for tach, new bracket for tach/speedo, new plastic casing for tach/speedo/instrument lights.

If smoothcrim and crazybob would post some pics...

I know both bikes fall into the upper limit of my price range, but I am in the market and would be interested.

as you may know within the last 3 years I've totaled 2 brand new cars and my insurance is sky high. I also had a period of 6-8 months without any insurance (hurts your rate). that said, I only pay $600 a year for full coverage on my bike, theft, nature, etc.

I am in no rush to sell as I have another bike. My insurance on 600cc Honda Shadow 2000 year model for liability only is $130 a year. That's the only vehicle I have on that insurance plan.

I use 87 on my cbr600, the manual says it can run off of 86 and up. And since 87 is cheap, its a plus factor.

Sorry if $600 seems like a lowball offer, but I looked the retail value up on KBB and it said $725 was the retail value of that bike.

91 GS500
apparently
a piston is slapping
and its not really worth fixing

i'll just buy a new(er) bike

and i'll prolly get like 40-60% of my initial investment back in the trade in, even with the slappy piston

how do u guys get such cheap rates with full coverage on bikes, are u on your parents plan?"

progressive is charging me 400 for the year for liability only, although im covered if uninsured or underinsured drivers hit me etc..

but they quoted about 5000 for complete coverage.. im 19 and only have one minor accident on my record and have been driving for 3 years

Must be the accident and the years driving.
My wife is European and the faact that she had her license more than 5 years before she moved to the US was a big factor in her rates.

I am betting that your driving for less than 5 years and the fact that you have had an accident....PLUS you on a motorcycle...they are just counting the days till that claim comes in.

Not to say you will file a claim but that is probably what they are thinking.

it also will probably depend largely on the bike

some of the more popular bikes that are stolen a lot will have higher rates on theft coverage.

I'm 5'2" and female, and looking for a bike to ride around town on weekends (I'll have to keep it in Wilmington). I'm considering getting a Yamaha Virago 250 or something similar because I'll probably only ride 3-4 times a month, and it is much more affordable for that purpose ($3500 MSRP). I'll be getting a real job in a year, and could upgrade then if need be. Would this be a bad choice, and does anyone know of any used cruiser style 250s for sale?

^A coworker's dad owns a Yamaha dealership, and he claims he can get me a good deal. If that's the case, I'm going yamaha. If its the same sort of deal I can get elsewhere, I'm open to pretty much anything in that price range. The Rebel seems to be a bit smaller than the comparable Yamaha and Suzuki.

The Virago is not a bad starter bike if you like that style.

Have you sat on one? How's the ergos? Can you flat-foot it? Are the bars comfortable? etc.

I usually suggest Japanese & used for first bikes, but if you can get a good deal on a new yammie...

Whatever you decide, take the MSF basic rider course.

buying a brand new cruiser so small probably isn't the best idea if you're planning on upgrading quickly just because the resale will be hurt because it isn't as flashy as a sport replica. something like a ninja 250 will have great resale because people want to learn on something cool looking
