-Every time I think AJ is a loser he seems to one up himself. Damn good thing tony didnt make him part of the other family, and I hope he kick AJ's ass to the curve... Last thing he needs is another addict who can't hold onto a knife to stab an 80yo crazy who deserves it in the back!

-I was really hoping to see the Starbucks guy get roughed up

-More seriously, a running trend on the Sopranos is eggs foreshadow bad things to happen... Considering how many eggs were in this episode (including Patsi's dozen and the last line "what the fuck is happening to this neighborhood) something is brewing bigtime.

-and now, this weeks zingers:

Ms. Gatti: "Those nigger fucking whores they play that music so loud"
T: "Thats not nice, and those are Puerto Ricans Ms. Gatti"

"Listen closet queen if you can't handle it don't send out the signals"

"Its just a movie"

"Changing times for the Family
Monday, May 1, 2006

WARNING: This column contains major plot spoilers for last night's "Sopranos" episode.

Okay, let's all get it out of our systems now, so we can move on:

"What is this, Brokeback Gangsters?"

You probably said or thought some variation on that joke as you saw Vito and Jim the cook/biker/fireman having their idyllic roll in the tall grass. (Either that or, like me, you saw it as a gay package tour ad.)

The Vito storyline has been a rewarding digression, but the latest chapter started to push the outer edge of the "Sopranos" envelope -- not because of the smooching, but because of the scenes leading up to it.

Dartford already seemed too good to be true -- if Costa Mesa was Purgatory, this is Gay Heaven -- and now it seems even better than that. First there was Jim's fetishized entrance on motorcycle at the house fire and the glamour shot of him with the rescued child. Then there was dialogue so corny you could butter it: "I'm glad you decided to write your book in our little town" and "Sometimes, you tell a lie so long, you don't know when to stop. You don't know when it's safe."

Now, nothing on this show is random. Right before Vito went out for the leather bar adventure that led to his exile, we saw his wife watching Douglas Sirk's 1950s melodrama "Imitation of Life." The movie's story about a black girl passing for white -- plus the Technicolor images and purple dialogue -- made it a gay cinema staple.

Either last night's Dartford scenes were a deliberate homage to Sirk or writers Diane Frolov and Andrew Schneider went overboard trying to illustrate how different Vito's new world is from the one he abandoned. There were times where it didn't just feel like a different world, but a different show.

But those occasional missteps didn't take much away from another fascinating episode, one that continued to push this season's themes of identity and change.

I was wrong when I declared in my episode four review that Tony couldn't change. This is not the same man Junior shot. Old Tony doesn't shrug off Vito's "crime." Old Tony can't give Artie meaningful advice about his business. And no way does Old Tony turn down a pants party with Julianna.

To his surprise and disgust, New Tony couldn't stand the thought of her unbuttoning the same shirt an unwitting Carmela helped him put on earlier that night. You could see Tony's pain as Carm called him "my handsome man," just as you hear the angry confusion as he screamed about smoked turkey as his way of venting about what Carm "made" him do.

On the other hand, New Tony is still greedy enough to abandon his jihad against the Walmart-ization of America when Jamba Juice made the price right for selling out Caputo.

(Patsy failing to intimidate the coffee chain store manager illustrated yet another downside to franchising: Not only do the service and character suffer, but wiseguys lose an income stream. Won't someone please think of the protection rackets?)

Meanwhile, as Vito was letting go of his old life (at least until his wife mentions Thad McComb's name to Phil, followed by a call to Carlo's private eye pal, followed by ...) and Tony was showing his "every day is a gift" talk wasn't just smoke, AJ was struggling with his own sense of self.

If Meadow is her father's daughter, then AJ has been his mother's son, never questioning where the money came from so long as he could spend it. And just as Carmela needed to start her own business, AJ may have finally recognized he needs something going for him besides his name.

Tony was wrong to call AJ "a nice guy." AJ's not nice; he's just self-centered, weak and stupid. In case anyone still believed our resident Fredo could cut it in the Family business, that fiasco with Junior and the knife should put that theory to rest with some water and pills in a paper cup. And if Tony had staked AJ for his own club, how many weeks would it take before the place was a candidate for a Scatino-style bust-out?

I've heard complaints that, since Tony woke up from the coma, the season has lost its focus, that the writers are wandering from character to character without an overarching plot to tie them together. But everything on this show is connected, whether it's Phil and AJ both sticking their beaks in Tony's business and pressuring him to kill someone he doesn't want to, or the contrast between Dartford (the intimate, independent America that Tony longs for) and the North Ward (the gentrified, homogenized America we're getting).

Even the individual scenes were closely linked to each other through editing. We cut from Tony and Carm in bed in Caldwell to Vito in bed in Dartford; from Vito walking down the main street of Dartford to an identical shot of two women walking past Satriale's; from Melfi giving advice to Tony to an identical shot of Melfi seeing Dr. Kupferberg.

There is one big picture here, and if we can't see it all yet, we will. But that picture better not look like it was shot in Technicolor.

Some other random thoughts:

Tony's panic attacks are prompted by food, but is there a pattern to AJ's? The second (on his way to military school) and third (last night) both came as he contemplated a terrible future, but the first (being praised by his football coach) doesn't fit. Theories?

AJ's suggestion that Tony and Carm "have all the money in the world" was the latest instance where Tony squirmed at references to the family finances. Exactly how hand-to-mouth are they living?

Melfi can be a good shrink when she doesn't have a lying sociopath for a patient. But Kupferberg is a snooty, oblivious clown, and Melfi is constantly pointing out what a lousy job he's doing. Why doesn't she get a new therapist?

More "Godfather" tribute: Tony strolling around the North Ward and listening to an old lady's complaints like he was Don Fanucci from "Two." Fanucci was killed by a man named Vito; foreshadowing?

While some of the Vito/Jim writing was clumsy, Frolov and Schneider were much subtler with the way they revealed that Julianna is a recovering alcoholic.

Know your Family's reading habits: Vito reads Ab Attack, presumably for both eye candy and advice for burning off those Johnny cakes. "

that's scary to think about, but it actually makes a lot of sense. i could really see tony keeping people from killing vito, only for vito to resurface and take out tony for good in the season finale or something. that would suck.

didnt' say you ever had to be comfortable with homosexuality, but they're fucking actors. there's a difference between enjoying an episode and not enjoying it because two ACTORS are ACTING like homosexuals.

when you say you like pulp fiction, I bet you don't preface it with "I like pulp fiction..except the part with the gimp. that's too gay." sopranos is awesome and two dudes kissing doesn't change that.
