i played oblivion quite a bit on the PC (and never really did the main story line - too bust side questing and getting into guilds) - don't be intimidated by it...everything levels with you - monsters, gear, drops, etc. about the only thing that doesn't level is locks and their picking difficulty (they really don't want you ransacking stores at level 1 I suppose) 3/26/2007 3:07:06 PM |

btw for those not running folding, do it. the ps3 absolutely kills at this - i think i did 7 WU's in the first 48 hours. it's something like 13% of all processors do 60%+ of the TFLOPS right now
of course, the new ATI GPU's do even better...0.3% of processors doing 7% of the TFLOPS...once those become more mainstream it will be sick 3/26/2007 8:47:28 PM |

Quote : | "When I started this blog post I was planning to write about Home and Little Big Planet from a developer’s perspective. But as I read some of the media and message board responses to Sony’s GDC presentation, I wanted to address an ongoing industry phenomenon. Specifically, the sheer volume of negative spin toward Sony from both the mainstream press and the internet community. Mere minutes after Sony announced a beautiful, ground breaking, free, community-enhancing online PS3 service, 100 internet posters were trying to argue that this was somehow a bad thing. Whether you love or hate Sony, if you’re trying to spin Home as a bad thing I can only conclude that you’re part of Microsoft’s $3.2 billion viral marketing campaign.
The problem with including a hard drive in one version of the 360 and not in the other is that developers can’t use it for the games. Or, at least, they can’t use it for any required features. When you are guaranteed to have at least a 20 GB hard drive in the console, you can write your load caching routines around it, or use it for your application’s storage needs. To a developer, an optional hard drive is roughly equivalent to no hard drive at all.
If you ever hear someone say “Blu-Ray isn’t needed for this generation,” rest assured they don’t make games for a living. At Insomniac, we were filling up DVDs on the PS2, as were most of the developers in the industry. We compressed the level data, we compressed the mpeg movies, we compressed the audio, and it was still a struggle to get it to fit in 6 gigs. Now we’ve got 16 times as much system RAM, so the level data is 16 times bigger. And the average disc space of games only gets bigger over a console’s lifespan. As games get bigger, more advanced and more complex, they necessarily take up more space. If developers were filling up DVDs last generation, there are clearly going to be some sacrifices made to fit current generation games in the same amount of space." |
His top 10 list is:
1. Home & LittleBigPlanet 2. Free Online 3. 50 GB Games 4. Casino Royale 5. HDMI 6. Standard HDD 7. The Wii Fad Will Fade 8. PS3 Has a Major CPU Advantage 9. PS2 still outselling 360 10. Something For Everyone
His blog posting is definitely going to be controversial but I think he makes some good points.

^ That would be the main part of his posting that I don't completely agree with simply because no one knows what will happen to the Wii at this point. It is no secret that most people with Wiis are done with the mini games compilations and are now waiting for some real games to come out. If some quality content games get put out, most likely from Japan, then the Wii story will be different. But to think that the current Wii insanity level is sustainable long term is not very likely, although it will still be popular since it is much easier to justify buying a cheaper Wii over the more expensive 360/ps3.

Just because they sell more doesn't mean they are better. I would say that McDonald's sells more beef than the Angus Barn, but I wouldn't say their beef is better... 3/27/2007 3:47:07 PM |

^To developers, you are wrong. Which one is "better" or more powerful is not the question. The question is which "quality" brings the most profit.
People try to say "PS3 is getting better" and "Its the one to beat", but its sales are currently low. As I have stated before, its easier to pull developers to your box if you have the user base NOW, not a theoretical user base that may exist in the future.
Continuing your comparison, Angus Barn may have "better" meat, but not everyone is going to buy it. You can't sell Angus Barn food everywhere, but you can sell McDonalds everywhere. And if a McDonalds makes as much as an Angus Barn, yet is simpler, then why bother?
Ok, that was a stretch with the comparisons, but you see the point. You simply cannot say that PS3 is the one to beat when its developers are noticably shaky at this point. You cannot say it is better because it is more powerful. To be "better" and "the one to beat" you have to earn it. 3/27/2007 5:27:22 PM |

Quote : | "We think every PlayStation 3 owner should have an “elite” experience, which is why we include an internal hard drive and HDMI output in every PS3 we sell, along with the 50 GB of storage capacity on a high definition Blu-ray disc. Sony has been the strongest advocate of high definition as the future of next-generation gaming. This requires high-definition components, including HDMI output, and large storage devices to deliver and store all that rich and vivid HD content. Microsoft’s announcement today not only legitimizes Sony’s PS3 strategy, it moves us closer to adopting universal standards in the area of high definition gaming that will benefit game developers and ultimately the end user." |

Quote : | "NC State Engineer Creates First Academic Playstation 3 Computing Cluster Dr. Frank Mueller releases the power of the Playstation3 for science and education
We’ve all seen the commercials for the blade servers touting the plug-in ease with the ability to organize data for an entire company. But at what price? At North Carolina State University, Dr. Frank Mueller imagined using the power of the new Sony Playstation 3 (PS3) to create a high-powered computing environment for a fraction of the cost.
Mueller, an associate professor of computer science, has built a supercomputing cluster capable of both high-performance computing and running the latest in computer gaming. His cluster of eight Sony PS3 machines — the first such academic cluster in the world — packs the power of a small supercomputer, but at a total cost of about $5,000, it costs less than some desktop computers that have only a fraction of the computing power.
“Clusters are not new to the computing world,” says Mueller. “Places like Google, the stock market, automotive design companies and scientists use clusters, but this is the first academic computing cluster built from Playstation 3s.”
Mueller’s PS3 cluster was realized after he spent a few hours one day in early January driving from store to store to purchase the eight machines for his cluster. When he had collected all eight, he returned to his lab at NC State and set to work building a supercomputing cluster.
“Scientific computing is just number crunching, which the PS3s are very good at given the Cell processor and deploying them in a cluster,” says Mueller. “Right now one limitation is the 512 megabyte RAM memory constraint, but it might be possible to retrofit more RAM. We just haven’t cracked the case and explored that option yet.” Another problem lies in limited speed for double-precision calculations required by scientific applications, but announcements for the next-generation Cell processor address this issue.
“In the computing world there is a list of the top 500 fastest computers,” says Mueller. Currently the fastest is BlueGene/L, a supercomputer with over 130,000 processors at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory. The PS3 cluster at NC State does not break into the top 500, but Mueller estimates that with approximately 10,000 PS3 machines anyone could create the fastest computer in the world - albeit with limited by single-precision capabilities and networking constraints.
The Sony PS3 allows the Linux operating system to be installed, and IBM designed the programming environment for programming the Cell processor (including eight vectorization units), which combined tremendous computing power within a single PS3. According to Mueller, each PS3 unit contains six operational special-purpose cores for number crunching and one general-purpose core that is two-way multithreaded in his configuration, so the eight machines clustered have 64 logical processors, providing plenty of number-crunching ability in addition to running the latest games.
“January 3 is the ‘birthdate’ of this cluster,” says Mueller. “Of course, here at NC State we will use it for educational purposes and for research. We are working with scientists to determine the needs and how our cluster can be used to their benefit, and our computer science faculty is already using the cluster to teach classes in operating systems, with parallel systems, compilers and gaming likely to follow.”" |

I definitely agree with his point that you have the choice between making an AAA game designed from the ground up for one console or going multiplatform and dumbing down the game. Exclusive games are always going to offer the best of each console and that is not going to change anytime soon.
MGS3 had content cut because they ran out of room, and Kojima has already said he wants the newer blu-ray so he can have 50GB to work with instead of 25. From what I have read MGS4 is going to have some really unique and interesting dynamic audio techniques. The more MGS we get the better.

Some new info on DMC4 from PSM and also scans from Famitsu (warning: boss spoilers):
Quote : | "*Series staples remain intact - everything running at constant 60fps.
*New characters can be unlocked after clearing the game.
*Dante plays totally different to Nero. He also has the four basic styles from Devil May Cry 3 returning - Swordsmaster, Gunslinger, Royal Guard and Trickster. The core animations still look the same from Devil May Cry 3 but everything has been upgraded to look more natural and enhanced, as expected of next-gen by the gamers. He's as responsive as ever. Much more like DMC3 Dante than DMC1 Dante in terms of mobility.
* Vergil was a subject that was avoided as it was reiterated that Dante was one of the main focuses of this game. Vergil was still not confirmed to be in the game though yet it wasn't said that he won't be. Who knows. They have no interest in making a Vergil spin-off game either." |

Burnout 5 Preview http://ps3forums.com/showthread.php?t=66850
Quote : | "The granddaddy of all those differences in the game's new, seamless world. Paradise City may seem ironically named (considering its rambunctious denizens), but for those of us navigating its streets, it's a utopia of high-speed destructive potential. Split up into 5 districts, together comprising 18 different neighborhoods, the city's size is roughly equivalent to 15 older Burnout courses chained together. And every virtual inch of it will be accessible to the player, from the outset of the game, without loading between districts. "We want to do away with loading," Ward said. "That's a big goal. We don't even know 100 percent if we can pull it off, but that is what we are aiming for." It's a good thing-Revenge's excruciating loading sequences constantly hampered its flow.
Technical Takedown Burnout 5 may find release on both the PS3 and the Xbox 360, but for the Criterion team, the PS3 version will be a huge focus. While Ward did say that it was simply too early to be able to accurately predict exactly what would be in either release, he noted that the team is attacking the PS3 with the same fervency they did the PS2-one hell of a lot. 1080p over HDMI, for instance, just isn't possible on the 360 at this point, although it's a foregone conclusion on the PS3. The PS3's Sixaxis controller will provide additional control options the 360's doesn't have. Plus, the PS3's advanced processing capabilities make it particularly suited to the physics-intensive crashes that are going to be taking place. And, boy oh boy, will those be some spectacular crashes. The new physics engine Criterion has implemented will allow fracturing of cars into 80 different parts, a massive leap from the 12 destructive components of Burnout Revenge's vehicles. You'll be able to shear roofs off of rides, shred doors and windows, and even tear entire cars in half during takedowns and crashes. The visuals are only half of the action, however; a huge amount of work has also been put into the audio, which has been beefed up to react dynamically with the intricacies of every crash. A devoted process will track the movements of each element in a crash sequence and assign sounds to match the visual proceedings. Thus, instead of the bland, regurgitated sound effects of previous titles, Burnout 5's audio will, figuratively and literally, blow its predecessors away." |

Newest Ratchet and Clank screenshots that also look awesome.
Guitar Hero 3 and Rock Band are both confirmed coming to the PS3 by the end of the year as well if anyone hasn't already gotten their fill from the PS2 days.

I don't have Linux on my PS3, but you don't need Linux to play h.264 files on the PS3. H.264/MPEG-4 has been supported by the system out of the box since launch. The only problem is it is picky about the header. It will only play files tagged by Quicktime Pro. Fixing the header is really easy/fast though, there is a guide located at http://www.sampletheweb.com/2007/01/19/create-an-avch264-video-for-the-ps3-on-a-mac/.
I think most people use a program called PS3 Video 9 for this http://www.redkawa.com/videoconverters/ps3video9/, but I have never used it so I don't know if it is any good. 4/10/2007 8:50:52 PM |

PSP Video 9 works like a champ...i would evpect the same for PS3 Video 9 (all the work from them has been quality)
so i'm loving The Godfather...only thing that annoys me is to load an old game, you have to quit, go back to the main menu, load, and start again...unless i'm missing something. just kind of sucks when you push a merchant too far and they won't take your protection and you want another go at it. and thank god for your henchies - straight roll shit with those fools (thou mob wars happen a lot faster when you're taking down 3 rackets in a row)
