Here's a re-up of Okkervil River. I mistakenly left the same name on the file, so we'll see how long this one stays up.

I saw Okkervil River's tour dates, but can't remember where. Anybody know where I can find them? They aren't on their site.

hahaha, some of the kids on Oink reported the guy who posted the John Vanderslice album for having poor quality because they didn't realize that he does everything in analog

LOL

The new interpol is good, but it just sounds like a not as good version of Turn on the bright lights. Seems like they could push themselves a little more.

I cannot stop listening to this Okkervile River record. I listened to it at least 3 times on my way to and from Asheville for the Pumpkins.

I think I like this one more than I liked Black Sheep Boy on early listens. Still too early to tell.

"what's up with the beach boys shit at the end? not sure how i feel about this one yet."

In reference to the Okkervil River usage of Sloop John B.... it got me thinking..... how were they not paying royalties on that?

Then I thought I remembered that it was a traditional song, not a true Beach Boys song. I looked it up today and I recalled it correctly.

Here's the quote from wiki and the link: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sloop_John_B

Quote :
"It was originally a traditional West Indies folk song, possibly recorded earliest by The Weavers under the title "Wreck of the John B", the song taken from a collection by Carl Sandburg (1927). Alan Lomax is said to have made a field recording of the song in Nassau, 1935, under the title "Hoist Up the John B. Sail". The song was adapted by Weavers member Lee Hays. The recording of the song which directly influenced The Beach Boys was by The Kingston Trio.
"

I had almost forgot all about it being a traditional tune.

NumbWall -- I googled it again and it was from a blog.. the password was nodatta.blogspot.com try that, should work.

Mid-year update:

Top Albums:
1. Do Make Say Think - You, You're A History In Rust
2. Explosions In The Sky - All Of A Sudden, I Miss Everyone
3. Andrew Bird - Armchair Apocrypha
4. Cloud Cult - The Meaning Of Eight
5. National - The Boxer

Top Songs:
1. Do Make Say Think - A With Living/The Universe!

The most famous dichotomy since Yin-Yang exists in these two pieces of music. The first song's train-like drumming and scratching picks up steam throughout the previous four-minutesish: guitars, banging pipes, hi-hats, barely-decipherable voices, piano, and a harmonica flying between both speakers. The most beautiful music I've heard this year arrives at the 3:55 mark and lasting until 4:30. This is when the second chorus climaxes with every instrument joining the harmonies long enough for you feel at peace with the world, existence, living, etc. (at least that's what I got from the lyrics). The rest of the track lulls into complency right before immediatly killing your ears with "The Universe!" Five minutes of instrumental rock that fucking rocks. The crude use of instruments are the exact opposite than those used on the previous track. I guess this would be the Yang.

2. Field - A Paw In The Face
3. Okkervil River - Unless It Kicks
4. Andrew Bird - Scythian Empire
5. National - Mistaken For Strangers
6. Patrick Wolf - Bluebells
7. Apostle Of Hustle - National Anthem Of Nowhere
8. Eluvium - Seeing You Off The Edges
9. Low - Violent Past
10. Cloud Cult - Pretty Voice

I'm really enjoying the new Buffalo Tom album Three Easy Pieces. I had no idea they were still making music. Still mining that early 90s alternative rock sound like it ain't no thang.

The more I listen to the Okkervil River album, the more I love it. Moreso than Black Sheep Boy at this point, but we'll see how that goes over time.

St. Vincent next Friday at Local 506.

^^^ ActionPants and I will probably be there, too.

And while not a 2007 album, it's still cool that The Format is giving you a free download of their album Dog Problems if you just pop over to their website by July 16th:
http://www.theformat.com/

If you like it, they're playing at the Cradle on August 26th.

I am most definitely getting my St. Vincent on again. Even though she is likely going to be doing the solo thing, it'd be nice to hear the fleshed out arrangements with drums and such live.

it makes me wonder what you folks would think if you saw a good orchestra perform good music. not some rush-job accompaniment written for a rock band. i know i would enjoy seeing one of my favorite bands accompanied by an orchestra. but really, it's only special because you're familiar with the words and the melodies because you've listened to it over and over. i just wish more people could understand how wonderful a full orchestra can be when you're fully acquainted with the great masterpieces of all time.
