i guess you're not good at reading or not good at understanding. "years to come" might have been a little tricky for you. i'll be a little more direct this time... Rivers > Vick after one year. that will still hold true after their careers are over. Rivers is only going to get better and improve for years to come. vick won't be a playoff regular with the current path he is on.

"but yeah going for it on 4th and 11 was dumb....he still didnt lose this game for them though."

The "he didn't lose the game for them" approach is very telling. First off, he cost them big, maybe not all the blame, but he certainly did nothing positive to help his team today, nothing, nada, period. He had two aggregious errors (4th and 11 on Opponent 30 opting to go, and the pointless challenge) to ZERO brilliant calls in my opinion that any Charger fan saw and was screaming at the TV the entire time each call was made on Marty's part. When it gets down to 8 teams in the playoffs (out of what, 32? total teams), I'm sure each franchise would like to have the peace of mind of knowing their coach does more than "not lose the game." If Bellichick was the type of coach who just "didn't lose the game" instead of making calls that actually win the games, he'd probably have lighter fingers (the play where he intentionally took a safety in Denver comes to mind as a brilliant call that appeared less than dumb at the time). Marty also let the critics get to him on that 4th and 11 in their first Q. They lambast him all week for "martyball" and being conservative, which is exactly what he should have done on that play, but I bet he wanted to stick it to the critics instead of keeping his focus on winning, I mean his kicker got pretty good leg on a 54 yarder at the end.

I dont know why you're trying to argue with me. You told me nothing in that last post that I couldnt figure out for myself.

All I'm saying is that if he didnt have a history of choking in the big game, nobody would have mentioned coaching as a reason for SD losing this game. He's going to get fired for losing this game, but this one in particular shouldnt have come down to his two mistakes. They werent that bad.

If you list the reasons they lost this game, he's #5 on the list behind dropped passes, fumble by Parker, headbut personal foul, and the fumble after the 4th down interception....where he should have knocked the damn ball to the ground...and the game ends. Thats not so bad for Marty, thats all I'm saying.

The blame goes on the moronic play of some of the players on the Chargers team. A lack of discipline is usually put on the coaching.

Eric Parker should be working his ass off this offseason hoping and praying that they get back to the playoffs so he can redeem himself. He couldn't catch anything, he made one of the biggest bonehead plays a kick/punt returner can make. The first rule of a muffed kick is to jump on the ball and secure it, not try to pick it up.

I can't believe McCree. He basically cost them the game. The best play he could have made on that ball was to just bat it down, take the ball at the line of scrimmage. But no, he wanted to make the highlight reel, let's intercept the ball and try to make a run back. All he needed to do was fall to the ground and the Chargers could have wasted a good amount of clock, not to mention have decent field position.

And the personal foul was absolute garbage. That's what you expect from 2nd string college players who get on the play 2-3 times a game and try to be a badass.

I don't think they managed the game poorly and I don't really blame Marty. But they need to fix something.

How often does this happen if its not inside the 10 or the game's completely wrapped up?

You'd have seen Martyball, trust me there. They would have an 8 point lead, 6 minutes left on the clock and a first down around the 40. They would have let the playclock go down on every play and get just enough for first downs. They moved the ball well between the 30's all game, so I could see 2-3 first downs and maybe a chance at a FG or a punt to pin them deep inside the 20 and leave them with 2-3 minutes at most and their D would have gotten a break.

WolfAApack, I'm not arguing, but you will certianly agree that dropped passes, *personal fouls, INT&fumble all occur in the field of play and the time for reaction is less than one second, in fact instinctual. Players make mistakes in the field of play, even good players, happens every game. Marty had a timeout to think about kicking the field goal on the 4th an 13, and the challenge was by far the dumbest decision I've seen in a while, while he was also given more than a millisecond to decide to challenge or not. My point is that reaction time for players is exponentially less than what coaches have. Couple that with the fact that there is no evidence that he actually made any above average calls this game, and you have a coach that will not sleep well for the next few days. Good coaches do not make either of the two decisions Marty made. On a side note, its funny to see people hating on Brady. He didn't make any miraculous throws, or escape the pocket under immense pressure to make a big play. He simply was given all day many times, and hit open receivers down the stretch. The chargers lost, the Patriots just opened the present they were given

*Although that personal foul was dumb, the player who actually initiated the contact was the patriot, the Charger was just jawing, it should have been off setting PF's worst case scenario.

Did anyone notice that the 2 pt conversion was the EXACT SAME play they used in the Super Bowl against the Panthers? Started motion from the same point on the play. It was a carbon copy.

I'm going for the Patriots next week b/c I think it's hilarious that Peyton never wins.

The Colts will win if Peyton doesn't force things. For the first time in his life he isn't trying to win everything by himself and they are doing well. My prediction is that he goes back to his old ways, forces things in there, gets picked a few times, and blames it on his OL.

Pats by 4.

^^^ Actually I'm partially serious. Not about his blaming the OL but about forcing it in the playoffs. If he lets the game come to him he's clearly the best QB in the game (one of the best ever) but you have to admit he tries to do much in big games over his career...

I like Tom Brady and Troy Brown so I wouldn't mind seeing them win.

p.s.- Did anyone see it was P-Riv that calmed LT2 down?

Yeah, but now the colts have Vinatieri....who is one of the main reasons the Pats have been so successful recently

I think the Pats win, but God I hope the Colts do. I'm sick of watching the freakin Patriots in the Super Bowl.

^ yup, but with the Colts, Vinatieri "saved" Manning's ass, but with the Pats he was "set up" by Brady moving the offense

Martyball at its worst.

By the way, wasn't there a group of people basically saying that Parker was a much better receiver than J Co. in the thread about Cotchery? Where are they now?

Parker is already an overachiever. He was NEVER a top 3 WR while at Tennessee (and I mean top 3 at Tenn, NOT the entire country or even conference), I am amazed hes done what hes done in the NFL. Hell, I am amazed he even made it in the NFL.

as much as I would hate to see SD lose Michael Turner, they need to trade him for a really good wide receiver. Thats the only deal they should be concerned with in the offseason. If they can get a really good one and keep Turner, then I'll crap myself.

Then they need to trade Parker to Denver for Brian Clark. Straight up. Actually, they can give denver Parker and cash for Clark. Clark is probably a free agent too. Whatever. Do it anyway, just get rid of Parker.

yeah, if you can't routinely make 55 yard last second game tying field goals in the playoffs then you clearly need to find another profession.

"First, there was an email I received from a trusted NFL source – I’ll just call him “Deep Shield” – who relayed a conversation he had with a person who had full audio access to the Chargers meltdown vs. the Patriots.

As you may know, NFL Films does OUTSTANDING re-caps of these games, by being allowed to mic up certain players and coaches – with their permission of course. They will also sometimes be allowed to mix-in audio of the coordinators in the booth, providing of course, it doesn’t compromise a team’s playbook or strategies vs. certain opponents.

When I watched the NFL Films “re-cap” of this game via iTunes (highly recommended at $1.99 per game, or $6.99 for the entire post-season) they showed a good bit of Marty on the sidelines doing his “coaching” of the ‘Bolts.

They even showed him playing “Father Flanagan” to that idiot Drayton Florence who got the 15 yard penalty that started a chain reaction of further game killing stupidity. There was Marty, sitting alone on the bench next to Florence, chiding him sternly, but gently.

Upon seeing this, I said: “classic Marty.” He always gets his rocks off being a “teacher.” Which is fine. But sometimes, the “teaching” must end, and the FEAR OF GOD must come into clear focus.

Personally, I thought it was time for the Fear of God. Most coaches, I presume would be staring daggers at Florence, if not even benching him for a series. Would it have made him play better? Maybe, maybe not.

But it DOES get the focus and attention of the rest of the team to TIGHTEN UP and play smart. I think the Chargers needed that.

Anyway, what NFL Films ALLOWED us to see of Marty “mic’d up” is a small FRACTION of what “Deep Shield’s” source was privy to. Get a load of this…

Steve,

Just caught the tail-end of your show this morning when you were talking about Schottenheimer and downloading the playoff stuff from I-Tunes.

I know somebody that had full audio access to that game. What he said, was mind-blowing.

You'll remember the infamous 4th and 11 call that probably doomed SD in the first quarter. This was the exchange that was heard “down-the-line” between Marty and Cam Cameron.

Marty: We're going for it.

Cameron: No f'ing way coach, we're kicking.

Marty: Find a play. We're going for it.

From then on it was a huge argument with cursing left and right. They had to call a time out and when Rivers came over he said, "What's going on, why aren't we kicking the field goal?"

So early in the second quarter, Marty yells into the mic, "Goddamnit, I'm so hyped up someone needs to get over here and calm me down." So the special teams coach comes over to him and talks to him and Marty says, "I was pulling into the parking lot today and I decided we were going to be aggressive. People don't think I can be aggressive but I decided driving in that we were going to be." And the ST coach says, "Coach. You can't let the outside stuff get to you." I think it's interesting, at best, that Schottenheimer was making decisions in the parking lot with regard to strategy.

All told, the guy said it was pretty unbelievable. Anyway, you probably will not be seeing those clips on any upcoming special on the life and times of coach Marty Schottenheimer but I thought you'd enjoy hearing about it.

Sincerely,
“Deep Shield”
"
