VINNY T FTW

btw, i used to be a fan of adam gold, but after this:

Quote :
"The Panthers are so desperate for a quarterback! (How desperate are they?)
The Panthers are so desperate for a quarterback that they signed Vinny Testaverde yesterday.

No joke. Vinny is coming to Charlotte to back up David Carr and his balky back. Gang, at some point, Vinny is going to play. If the Panthers aren’t picking in the 1st quarter of the NFL Draft in April it will be a miracle.

Was Bart Starr unavailable?

Seriously, I wonder if Marty Hurney gave any thought at all to Aaron Brooks, or Chris Weinke. I mean, was Weinke THAT bad?"

So even when Carr is healthy, do we go with Vinny? I say fuck yeah.

He seems to know how to manage the game much better. He also seems to have the "it" factor that Carr lacks (and will probably never have). Give Vinny a week to get his timing down, and to get more acquainted with the playbook, and he could be pretty decent.

Carr is a perennial loser. Having him on our football team all but guarantees failure. At least Vinny has some winning in his past, so I say go with him (until Dwight Freeney kills him).

does anybody else really dislike carr a little more everytime they see him on tv? He looks like a self-over inflated pretty boy. No reason not to stick w/ Vinny in 2 weeks against Indy. Vinny Testeverde vs. Peyton Manning - may as well be Elway vs. Montana

LOL, I bet the people wanting Vinny to start the rest of the year are the same ones who wanted Carr to start over Delhomme even after an 8 TD 1 INT start.

i like carr. that one run he made on 3rd down against tampa where he flipped in the air for the first down showed me that he isnt all the pretty-boy that he looks to be. He is a decent qb who looks to be willing to do everything he can to win.

that said, i love the testaverde effect

aside from that flashy run against Tampa, he did zero against them...155 yards on less than 50% completion ratio...1 INT and 1 garbage meaningless TD at the very end...he's scared...I wish Vinny could play the whole year until Jake gets back next season

however

if Carr is healthy in 2 weeks you have to start him...but also you have to be willing to put in Vinny if Carr is shitting it up

I wouldnt put Carr back in infront of Vinnie. Not until Vinnie has a bad game, Carr can't throw worth a shit and we've constantly seen it.

Look, I know Vinnie is old but at the end of the day - he makes better decisions, dosent seem to turn the ball over easy, and throws accurate. Why the fuck would you look a gift horse in the mouth like that considering how bad the situation is?

cause Vinny isn't the QB of the future

we paid Carr money to come in and backup Jake...Jake is out...how much do we fuck with Carr's head if we start Vinny versus Indy if Carr is healthy? I think you start Carr, but if he fucks up you pull his ass

agreed. With Vinny, our playbook shrinks by probably at least half....the bye week will help, but we'll still likely have to run a bare bones offense if he starts.....I just don't think he's a long term solution by any means. If our D keeps playing like it did yesterday, Carr will be just fine.

Well, on second look, in 2 games against the Colts last year Carr had 4 TDs and 0 interceptions. Maybe we should give him a shot.....

hopefully vinny can teach carr some pocket presence while he's there

If there's anything I've learned from foxy's tenure here, it's that you have to take everything he says with a grain of salt.

and really, if Vinny was as good as ya'll are making him out to be, he would have already been in the league already.....if Warner had stayed in and/or Rattay hadn't made so many mistakes yesterday we would not have won.

my vote is to go w/ vinny. i have been saying since i went to training camp that carr should not see the field.

Quote :
"carr really doesn't look that great right now. all his passes today were dump offs at or near the line of scrimmage when he couldn't find a open receiver. Basanez looked better than carr today, threading the needle several times to receivers in the middle of the field 20-30 yds away. Jake looked good, but nothing spectacular. jake is going to be the starter this whole year imo, unless carr makes up a lot of ground.
"

my vote is for vinny b/c he can game manage much better than carr. carr may have some more physical talent and experience w/ the playbook, but vinny gives us a better chance to win.

i think i heard a stat on one of the postgame shows yesterday that 1/4 of the league (8 teams) has already lost either a starting QB, or a starting QB and a backup QB...thats opening the doors for a lot of guys to get a chance...and honestly, how could you not put Vinny over somebody like Grossman?

It's all relative. We don't have another QB on the roster as good as him, nor is there another free agent out there that's as good.

I just noticed my already, already redundancy

But until proven otherwise, I'm pretty sure Vinny T isn't a long term solution for any team at this point.

What bandwagon are y'all going to jump on if he comes out and throws 4 ints against Indy?...direct snap to smitty or DeA every play?

Imo (and probably what foxy will do), its Carr until he proves he can't do it.

^And Carr prooved he could do it with his one start? Cards and Bucs had the same record, w/ the Cards having played the harder IMO. I say stick w/ Vinny until he proves he can't do it.

^Vinny also got an actual effort from the D. like I said earlier, when your D gets you 5 turnovers, it's hard for anyone you put behind center to lose....vinny didn't so much win that game, as Rattay lost it.

^^ I'd play harder for Vinny than Carr any day. I do agree with your comment though. Whoever is behind center I'll be pulling for them either way - I'd just stick w/ Vinny if it was me. He played well enough for us to win in 4 days prep, and now he gets 2 weeks to solidify what he knows, learn new plays, finally learn everybody's name, etc...

Quote :
"This is Testaverde's 21st year in the NFL, and he's had quite a few talented receivers to work with over the years. But none had the explosion and consistent playmaking ability of Steve Smith. During the week, Smith had told him, "Don't worry about overthrowing me. You can't overthrow me."

With just more than five minutes remaining in the game and Carolina trailing 10-9, this advice came in handy. On first down from the Carolina 35, Testaverde sent Smith in single coverage streaking down the right side. He faked a handoff to his back, then looked up top to see the coverage. "I saw a single high safety, which was good," he said. The safety couldn't cover the whole field, and Testaverde was happy he wasn't rushing to help on Smith. Vinny let it fly.

Does anyone throw a nicer deep ball, with any more perfect mechanics, than Vinny Testaverde? Remember when he used to be derided with the Bucs for being such an up-and-down player? No one ever said he couldn't throw a football the way God intended it to be thrown.

"Oh no!" he said to himself after launching the ball toward Smith. "I overthrew him."

He didn't. "For some reason, the corner on that side stopped, or slowed down," said Testaverde. Smith pushed into an extra gear, caught up to the ball, and brought it down for a 65-yard touchdown.

"See?" Smith told him on the sidelines. "You can't overthrow me."

Carolina 25, Arizona 10. Testaverde: 20 of 33 (.606) for 206 yards, one touchdown, no interceptions, 88.7 rating. More yards than Brett Favre. More accurate than Carson Palmer.

"Great game, Dad!" Gross said to Testaverde, with a grin, afterward."

^^awesome read. this is my favorite part.

I have a really GREAT feeling about the Colts game...

They will be looking forward to the showdown with the Pats and we will shock them and win.

So let it be written, so let it be done.

I hope they'll keep Vinny in for now, but we have to get the rest of our shit together before the Colts, otherwise it's going to be a bloodbath.

the main thing we got going for us in the colts game is we get an extra week to prepare, and they have a short week before our game.

i'm not getting my hopes up for the colts game. we are 4-2; the teams we have beat having a combined record of 5-18.

unless your team is one of those bottom feeders, they should be winning those games. there are a lot of bright spots however w/ young players that were not playing as well at the beginning of the season that are starting to look better now. i'm glad we faced those horrid teams at the beginning of the season.

i'm just hoping we can find at least 5 more wins somewhere to at least give us a chance at the play-offs. i think 9-7 would get us in with a lot of mediocrity in the nfc this year.
