I would kill for a NC30.

I would not mind if the boyfriend gave me his SV either, although his is modded to be a street legal track bike (new cams, aftermarket exhaust, etc.) and I'd want to turn one into a tourer with hard luggage.

^^ You saying the 250 isn't a bike?

It'll be tons better once I swap the frame and suspension in a couple weekends though. Got the stock shock and forks with thicker oil and stiffer springs, want my fox shock and reworked forks back.

Heh. Srsly. NC winters are too mild to put a bike away. Didn't think I'd be cleaning road salt off my bike, though.

That's one of the reasons why I took my truck a day or two after the threat of winter precip had passed. Not only was it typically colder (see: cold frontal passage) but I did not have the inclination to have that junk on my motorcycle.

250 is a bike no doubt, but back when I rode with Jillene and Keith to the lake I had my 250 pegged to the max and it tried to pretend to keep up. Going uphill was pretty funny... it felt like I was going backward but I was maxxing out around 90mph. That's when I knew I had to get a new bike

I refuse to go above 90 on public roads anyway, so it works.

I can't wait to get back on my SV

I almost forgot...it received Racetech springs, heavier fork oil, some non-oil-soaked front brake pads, and new fork seals since I last rode it....I can't wait to see the improvement (the brakes were really poor. not unsafe, but a real hindrance to sporty riding).

now I just need to finish wearing out the sport touring rubber that was on it when I bought it, so I can get some nice sticky tires on it.

Wellllllllll..... I would say that a 250 could almost be a scooter with a license tag just kidding... But I think Kawasaki just came out with a 250 that looks just like the ZX 600 +

I am soooo glad they finally changed their body style...
Well.. one of these days girl, you will have to come riding with me In fact, we ought to try to get more girls with us. JoHannah and Jamie (ncsukat) both ride. I am sure they both would like that...

PM me and we can exchange info etc... and I can contact you when I decide to head out. I am kinda hesitant to ride between 5 and 7 because of traffic... but other than that, I love to cruise. I also need to build my confidence back up so I can take those nasty turns. If I dont ride for a while, I dont feel as comfortable leaning my bike like I should and taking the turns at a faster pace...

'08 was the first year of the new 250. They are crazy hard to find and expensive when you do. For the $4k I'd spend for one of the new body style I could get 2 older ones and put all sorts of nice things on them. That's my current plan, have one set up for the mountains and around town and another (or a 500 or SV) set up for touring and going to Sam's club with lots of hard luggage.

Tell me where you can get a 06/07 ninja 250 + SV/EX500/GS500+Hard luggage for 4k...

Despite that gross exaggeration, I get the point. The new ninjas are selling for like 1k more that the old body style of 07, which seems a bit silly.

The 250 was the same for decades, don't need to get a '06/07. Same with the 500, I'd rather get an older well maintained one that a year old one that's been thrashed by a young stunna hopeful.

As for hard luggage, I am very happy with my $50 JC Whitney top case. No luggage racks for sale for the 250, so I got my boyfriend to weld up one for me (free!).

You can easily find a low mileage well running 250 for $1,500. I spent about $300 for the woodcraft risers, fox shock and reworked forks, leaving $200 for other stuff. Probably some tank grip pads, stainless lines and EBC HH brake pads. It's easily possible.

I think polishing a turd is a bit of an overstatement. There is something to be said for small displacement bikes. Generally, a 250-500cc bike can, in many ways, be pushed to the limit on the streets. The same can't be said for any of the o-so-popular RRs. Its not that the larger machines are inferior, because they can certainly entertain the squid in all of us, but they aren't necessarily better machines just because they have more HP/Torque. On a track is a totally different story, but on the streets, it's entirely reasonable to prefer a smaller bike. Riding a 250 will undoubtedly decrease the size of one's e-peen, but they a rider isn't inferior for choosing a machine that they can realistically master.

With that said, I understand most of the shit talking is because it's lewoods.

At least one person gets it.

Once I start passing liter bikes in the twisties I'm gonna order a set of my little pony decals to up the humiliation factor.

In the States, in 2009, there isn't anything available with the level of chassis/suspension/brakes that a 600cc race-replica comes with...we don't have a CBR400RR available in the U.S. market anymore.

A Ninja 250 isn't in the same ballpark as any full-tilt sportbike. It's not even playing the same sport--thinking of a Ninja 250 as a ZX-6R with a lot less power isn't accurate at all. While a ZX-6R is very much a ZX-10R with a smaller engine, a Ninja 250 is not just a further step down the displacement ladder. It's not really even related in any way other than the name.

I agree that no-holds-barred sportbike in something smaller than 600cc would be a ton of fun, and I advocate going with a 600 rather than a 1000 to almost everyone...but doing a bunch of performance mods to a Ninja 250 just seems silly to me, unless you intend to actually compete in the race class that they have.

^you'd have to be pretty good, up against a very poor rider, AND in a very tight set of twisties. I used to ride a LOT and ride HARD, so I know what it's like to completely leave for dead a poor rider on a faster bike. For that matter, the only person I've ever ridden with who I couldn't keep up with was r1pimpin, and on a curvy road, he could outrun me on my 750 with his R1 or his R6, and I'm sure he could've done it with his SV-650 if he'd ever put it on the street (part of it was that he was legitimately better, and part of it was that he was legitimately insane).

All of that said, have you ever actually RIDDEN a modern 1000cc sportbike? Even if you're a very good rider (and I doubt that you're THAT good at riding at the limit), you'd have your hands full against even a poor rider on a liter-machine, and if there was ever any straightaway at all, he'd put so much distance on you so quickly that you'd never be able to chip it away in the curves. I mean, yeah, a good rider on a Honda F3 will crush a really poor rider on a new R1 as long as the road keeps curving, but a Ninja 250 is a little different.

The 250 frame will never be as stiff as a modern RR bike, but upgrading the brakes and suspension helps a ton. For me, it's much more fun to ride it to the limit than ride the 636 at speeds that are safe on the street.

I've met several 250 riders that could shame the average 600 out in the mountains. It's not really that hard, but it might help that I did a ton of bicycling before getting the motorcycles so I'm familiar with the concept of trying to carry as much corner speed as possible and other things that most people take a while to learn.

it's uninformed shit like this that will never get you anywhere on TWWGarage. read Duke's statement above, then read it again. repeat that process until you stop believing you could hang with a 600 anywhere outside of a 35mph zone (and i dont even think you could do it there)

I rode yesterday... It was wonderful :-)

I rode my mom's 250 rebel in Cololorado. The weather was really nice there last week and I didn't need a helmet. But I only rode around the block without a helmet; just wanted to feel the rush of not wearing it. Otherwise I think its the dumbest idea not to wear a helmet...

I just bought a yamaha xv 250 for 50 bucks. It's ugly but I've had it running and all the electric stuff seems to work. I may just put a knobby tire on the back and ride it around the farm.

you can't beat craigslist. a guy had it who needed to get rid of it and I think he bought it not running and never messed with it. to make it a farm use only bike so to speak all I need is a seat and a gas cap. I think I'll rig something up out of croaker sacks and a tractor gas cap for a few days but I found some real cheap parts on ebay. it's kind of ugly, but I don't care. it will still be fun to mess with. I haven't had a motorcycle for a few years so I'm looking forward to playing around with it.

Are there any decent twisties around Raleigh with few cars?

I feel like an idiot leaning off the bike hauling through blind turns, but goddamn it's fun. Does anyone here do track days?
