You are one of maybe a 100 people in the world who would ever want to do this. It is easy to go this between multiple *Windows* PC's, using homegroups, as well as with media extenders and Windows Home Server. I was actually suprised it's supported at all

Probably more than 100 people keep their documents on NAS, but I'm sure it's not TOO common.

anyone else have issues with the downloaded win7 x64 ISO from microsoft's technet site?

it says it can't copy some of the files needed and reverts the installation.

i tried to upgrade my vista install with a burned DVD and when that failed, i just extracted the ISO onto the hard drive and then ran it.

in both cases it did the same thing.

the one i downloaded from technet wasn't complete or something. md5's didn't match up. re-downloading and then making a bootable USB stick.

this should be fun...

Waiting to do a fresh install on a SSD. I really wish I wouldn't have waited for the x-25 price drop. The price of the OCZ SSD's actually went up.

You should leave it on in 7. They made massive improvements to the indexing and search services, in performance and footprint. And a LOT of beautiful functionality in 7 relies on indexing. If anyone ever used the Longhorn Alpha's back in the day, Libraries were the first billboard feature of WinFS. And they worked (from a user perspective) exactly the same way in Win7 as they did in those early Longhorn builds.

Windows home server supports networking indexing. It's not NAS that's the issue, its using linux in a Microsoft client environment.

Out of boredom I installed the 7100 build on a Atom powered PC tonight. It actually turned out a lot better than I expected. I'm not actually doing anything on that box that requires a ton of horsepower, but the basic functions of the OS run without a hitch. I'm impressed (I guess more at the power of the Atom than anything else).

So you're suggesting I get a storage solution that runs Windows home server? That seems a little ridiculous. I would guess that most if not all consumer NAS devices (I have a WD mybook) run linux, and I'm sure that mine was designed to be used in a Windows environment. I mean it's not like I'm running linux on purpose, when I got this thing I didn't care what it used, and it's not like it advertises its OS on the box iirc.

Edit: I'm not really trying to be a dick or argue with you, it just seems like my setup wouldn't be all that uncommon.

VirtualBox works fine for me. Installed Win 7 this morning and gave it 512 meg ram. It was still reasonably fast.

Win7 has lower "real world" hardware requirements than Vista, and on par with the original release of XP. The only thing that has been bumped is memory, which is cheap and easy to upgrade on any system.

The combination of the new indexing implementation, caching improvements, new explorer shell, networking improvments, and WDDM 1.1 for video have really helped out low end (and mobile) performance.

i must say i'm impressed. it works. no driver upgrade issues. good design improvements and UI improvements. don't need to say much else about an OS. it just has to work.

I'm downloading the 32bit RC to install as a VM on my macbook pro mainly for IE8 testing and also just to play around with whats new. Is the 64bit stable or is it like Vista 64 back in the day?

and I realize I could probably read back through all 13 pages to see if anyone answered this but thats probably not going to be as quick as someone who already knows the answer responding.

The only reason you would have had problems with vista 64 is shit hardware. Windows 7 64bit works fine.

oh. well beta vista was pretty buggy compared to the win 7 one. So if thats your only experience with vista is the beta that would explain it. The windows 7 beta 64bit is probably better for driver support than vista was at release.

Theres no reason to use 32 bit vista these days since most people got around to fixing their drivers. The exception would probably be for mac specific hardware, if thats what you're running it on.

I've installed win7-64bit on 3 different computers and each time it found all the drivers and i haven't had any issues. Then again, if you're installing it in vmware or something theres really no point.

i mean like the isight, or that piece of shit they call the "mighty mouse" and some of the other mac specific hardware. I boot camped vista 64 on a c2d imac and alot of the hardware didn't have drivers available online. For example the ATI card thats in it was essentially the same as a PC version, but different enough that ATI's pc drivers wouldn't work (unless I maybe edited some infs).

So far I'm really liking Windows 7. Leaps and bounds better than Vista thats for sure. The interface is slick. Been stumbling on some neat features like dragging the window to the left or right for it to 'dock' with that side of the screen or the corner to dock as full screen.

Also IE8 should be renamed to something else because its really slick, fast, and stable so it shouldn't be tainted with "Internet Explorer" in the name. Also most of my development web apps don't require much work to support IE8 except for very minor tweaks to render in IE8. I really should call them 'untweaks' because its strictly CSS stuff that involves vertically aligning text in IE6/7 that I need to omit for 8.

If you have a bunch of windows open, grab one and shake it (wiggle back and forth). It will collapse all the other windows to the taskbar. Shake again and they come back.

Also, you drag to the top of the screen for Maximize, not just the corner And it works both ways. To unmaximize, just drag the window down.

BTW: Win7 64bit is solid as hell. It will be the default version in all OEM PC's that support it. I've only run 64bit since I got access, and have had zero problems with anything, drivers or otherwise.

Windows 7 64bit has actually been better with drivers than Vista 64 for me (if you exclude the weird GPU driver issues it has, which Vista doesn't get quite right either). I've only had 1 driver issue in my daily work with 7 though.

Just FYI- I did an upgrade from 7068-7100 and my firewall stopped working. What's worse, it wouldn't reinstall correctly because it wouldn't unpack everything.

Finally got everything back to normal, but even if you hack the Release Candidate to support upgrades from the beta it still might break stuff.

I was getting unexpected errors and auto locks/reboots watching a 720p file last night, my GPU was around 77C but I was too tired to check the event log to see what was going on.

Also, why would you even want to upgrade from beta to RC? l2 OS drive.

The only thing that annoys me is the fact that you can grab ahold of a window and movei t while maximized, but if you drag it anywhere it pops right back to it's original state.

I'm using only my 1.5TB HDD with the Windows 7 Beta OS. I plan on getting a 30gb SSD to use with the RC as my primary OS.

Can I just install the SSD, install W7 RC on it, and use the 1.5 TB HDD as data storage without worrying about conflicts?

I'm not sure how the system will handle having two different versions of the same OS installed on two separate drives.

you know, my computer started doing some funny things when i disabled the pagefile, but i'm wondering if that was really the culprit

i'm running 8gb in vista (so it probably doesn't belong in this thread, but since the issue's been brought up...) and when i'd put it to sleep, it'd lock up and never cut off...re-enabling my 2gb page file made it stop

*shrug*

The pagefile serves purposes other than to simply provide swap space when you run out of memory... you don't really want to disable it unless you have a specific reason to.

i usually just create a separate partition to keep the page file on, so it doesn't fragment the hard drive, then you can just hide the drive letter/partition so it's never seen. works wonders, i've been doing it since 2001 and keeps my system running fine for years w/out slow-down... you'll also want to set the min/max to the same so you don't waste resources everytime windows thinks it needs to resize the pagefile (if it's set to system managed)

^very good advice. Not that it means anything, but with Vista I returned to using a pagefile because of the indexing service. It took a lot of resources, but dear lord was it a life saver.

Win7 actually uses the pagefile really well now, and it really is a vital part of having a high performance and responsive machine.

The *best* scenario you can have, is to be running your pagefile on a ramdisk. If you have 8gb of memory, chances are you can spare 2-3gb of that for a ramdisk
http://www.cenatek.com/product_page_ramdisk_download_list.php

Is a free one that should be compatible in Win7.

I like it a lot. I'd use it on my main PC if I could get it working properly with samba. I can get it to join the domain and I can view network shares, but I can't add or login as domain users. It seems like they are actively working on it, so it should be fine by RTM:

^^ideally windows would just provide a mechanism to set the pagefile to memory. But there are lots of reasons why that hasn't been done. You get a pretty noticeable perf gain with applications that heavily utilize paging, but the real help is in long-term system performance and preventing disk fragmentation.

As Win Vista and now 7 continue to run, they begin caching more and more information which improves application and service performance. This works fine and well until you use an App like Photoshop that needs to grab a shitton of memory for a session. Then Windows has to released the cache bit by bit to free up memory, and that "stuff" gets pushed to the pagfile. After you shut Photoshop, it slowly starts refilling cache back from page file to memory.

That's one use of two or three I know of.
