(CAR trades their 2010 1st for #43 and #111)
2nd round, #43. Everette Brown - DE, FSU: High risk/reward pick. Clearly we had him rated as a 1st rounder and pounced on an unexpected fall. I really like his first step and natural pass rushing ability but there was some question as to whether he fit better in the 3-4. Many 3-4 teams passed on him so I'm going to assume that he was having problems playing in space and 4-3 RE is his best position. Remember that we hired Ron Meeks(Dungy Tampa-2 disciple) at DC this off season so I think it's safe to say that he had something to do with this pick. At 6'2/255, it seems like Meeks is looking for another Dwight Freeney.

It should also be noted that DEs don't usually contribute right away, so it's a good position to use next year's 1st on. Peppers can hold down the fort for another year while Brown puts on some weight and learns the system. I have no problem with him being a rotational guy for a year until Peppers signs elsewhere.

I freaked out a little bit last year at the idea of trading a future 1st for Otah because I wasn't sure what kind of team we had at the time. That trade ended up working out great and we've retained 21/22 starters so there's no reason to think we'll be picking in the top 20 next year. That being said, there's always the risk that this strategy could backfire like the SF/NE trade three years ago. If Brown eventually thrives at RE in Meeks' defense and we're picking close to 28 where we ended up this year this pick could easily be an A. I can't ignore the risk of this pick breaking bad but I like the aggressiveness. We also banked a needed 4th and only have to pay 2nd round money for next year's 1st.

2nd round, #59. Sherrod Collins - CB/FS, Troy: I don't know how much we're actually going to play cover-2 next year but this pick also seems to be influenced by next DC Ron Meeks. It looks like he has the size and ball skills to place CB in this system but I'm a little wary about his injury history and a lack of competition at Troy. I really hope they're not planning on moving Godfrey back to CB.

Grade: C-


3rd round, #93. Corvey Irving - DT, UGA: Most of the UTs I wanted were off the board so we reach for another project. Irving got very little playing time at UGA but he looked athletic and it sounds like he has a good motor/work ethic. He'll be a rotational guy next year with a chance to improve and take over for Damione Lewis down the road.

Grade: D+


4th round, #111. Mike Goodson - RB, TAMU: Mayock loved this guy for some reason and he seems to have good intangibles. He should contribute right away on special teams and fill a need for RB depth with the release of Nick Goings. Andre Brown is not reliable enough to fill this need and I didn't really like any of the other RB options at this point.

Grade: C+


4th round, #128. Tony Fiammetta - FB, Syracuse: I've been calling for a run blocking fullback the last couple drafts to no avail so I can't really complain. He probably would have been available later but we've been reaching for need all draft, why stop now? Hopefully he's the type of hammer we need to go along with an already potent running attack.

Grade: C


Round 5, #163. Duke Robinson - G, OU: I thought this guy was the next Steve Hutchinson? Keydrick Vincent will continue to start at RG but there was too much value here to pass it up and we lost a lot of OL depth this off season. Hopefully this epic draft day fall will motivate him to improve his pass blocking and become a dominant player.

Grade: B+


Round 6, #202. Traded to OAK for #216 and 2010's 6th: Sweet!

Grade: A


Round 7, #216. Captain Munnerlyn - CB, SC. He really should have stayed in school but we could use a return man and he couldn't be worse than CJ Wilson at corner.

We reached more than usual but did a good job filling needs. I can live with that.

I actually think we did better with our last 4 picks than our first ones.

I think the FB from Syracuse was a great pick, he was probably the best pure FB in the NCAA last year and Hoover is up there in age, so I think that was a solid decision, much like drafting Kalil a couple of years ago. And everyone was infatuated with Robinson as a high-caliber OL until he had a poor NC game and poor senior bowl performance. I could see a bad NC game leading to lack of confidence that hurt him at the senior bowl. If we can light a fire under this guy and get his head straight I could see him being a heck of a talent, esp. as a reserve with our lack of OL depth. And Captain was a solid CB for USC and I think he could develop with good coaching.

Brown I thought was a reach and not worth a future 1st round pick, but we'll see how he pans out.

I wouldn't say that, as long as we can stay healthy. We have 2 great tackles, a great center, and some solid FBs and RBs. I think we can probably do enough and have enough talent to mask any deficiencies at the guard positions and depth if we can avoid major injuries. The starting 5 are solid but the depth is a major concern, big drop-off after losing our best reserves.

i don't know if this has been discussed but i was wondering if it could have been a viable option to have traded Peppers to the Chargers. Prior to the draft, a lot of mock drafts stated that the Chargers don't have any major needs to be addressed in 09 draft. They run a 3-4 D but I am not sure where they would fit Peppers since he wanted to play OLB in that system since Merriman already provides that pass rush specialty.

Turns out Chargers used their 1st rnd pick on a DE anyways. Then Panthers wouldn't have to have given up 2010 1st rnd pick. Sorry if this has been talked about already. I was just curious if this kind of deal would have been ok.

to say that everette brown might be better in a 3-4 is stupid, anyone that runs a 3-4 would never use him, he has to play in a 4-3....the knock on him is that hes slightly undersized, but that is what they want, coach ron is trying to get brown to be like robert mathis, same size, same build....

secondly, panthers will not move godfrey back to corner, he is their safety.....collins was a guy they liked for size and hitting abilities, def. not for speed.....it 's not so much converting to a tampa two scheme now, just getting a couple of pieces in place so if they want to run some of it, they can and it would work.....collins's going to be keeping everyone in front of him, he will never get beat, probably every once in a while roll coverage over to him, but really size, and lay lumber, that's what meeks wanted.....

I don't know what part of that you're taking offense to, but most experts were speculating that he would go to a 3-4 team to play OLB. Seeing as how DEN/SD/CLE/SF/GB/MIA/NE all passed on him at a position of need at least once, it's safe to say that he's no Terrell Suggs. Which was good for us as I'd imagine he was one of the top defensive players on our board period.

I certainly wasn't arguing that he was a better fit in the 3-4. I was just pointing out that every expert mocking him to those teams were wrong. Maybe you thought I meant playing DE in a 3-4, which of course would be retarded.

All I said about Collins, projected by most as a FS, was that I hope they're not planning on play him there. That would mean moving Godfrey, who most projected as a CB last year. Just a random comment.

If by chance SD agreed to that I think we still take Brown at 16, he fits better than English or Ayers in Meeks' system. In this scenario we'd be paying Brown a lot more money and expecting him to start after coming out as a Jr. I like the way we did it better.

^I think Foxy just wants a D coordinator who will fall in line with what he wants....Problem is, the D hasn't been anything special since Del Rio left and he's reluctant to make changes until the game is over.

In the cards playoff game for example, Gamble should've been glued to Fitzgerald. Instead, they let AZ dictate the matchups by moving Fitz around and not switching gamble. By the time they adjusted defensively, the game was effectively over.

For what it's worth, I pin Delhomme's shitty performance on the coaching staff too. After the domination that was the opening drive, b/c of the ground game, they decide to call passing interception plays over and over until AZ's so far ahead by halftime, we are forced to give up the run game.

Overall, i like him as a coach, but it's the lack of flexibility and huge lapses in judgement that kill me.

i ran into Mike Rucker @ the quail hollow championship on Saturday and naturally felt compelled to engage in conversation with him. He was the nicest dude ever, and we talked for about 5 mins about the draft, the upcoming season, and his expectations.

He hasnt met Everette Brown yet but he has seen film on him and says that his technique is phenomenal and should be a huge success in the NFL.

He said there's no reason for us not to win the NFC South again and make a run in the playoffs.

I also asked him what he thought about the Julius Peppers situation, and he said that obviously he's really good friends with him and he expects things to work out with "Pep" in Carolina and that a lot of people don't realize the business side to things from a players perspective.

i tried to get him to come back but he said that he really wants to but his body wont let him. o well


oh and he was eating a grilled chicken sandwich on a sesame seed bun. he like mayonaisse and mustard on it with lettuce tomato pickles and 2 slices of onion. also enjoys Cape Cod original potato chips.
