yep, he was a lot funnier when he was trying to fit in with the younger folks in the group and his disconnection with the present day and general eccentricity led to comedy. but now, like you said, he's just a dick. and not even a funny dick.

^its probably hard to use chevy to be funny without having him do the either Clark Griswold or his caddyshack/fletch type characters

Like I said though hes the weakest part of the show and they should just kill him off and make chang a full member of the group

He can do everything pierce can humor wise except the old person jokes which usually fall flat anyway

There's already too much Ken Jeong in the show, he works best in small doses.

I think she's a nice counterpoint to the less grounded characters like Abed and Troy.

I wouldn't write Pierce out of the show just yet, the study group has a nice balance right now.
I'm willing to chalk up his acting like a dick recently to the pain meds.

Maybe this week we'll see a chang(e).

Wait, what? Chevy Chase was a comedic superstar long before any of those characters existed.

But he's damn near 70. Ask Pacino to channel Michael Corleone or Tony Montana and he'd struggle too.

i feel pierce pretty accurately portrays chevy chase's real personality and how he fits in with the cast dynamic. he's a bit of a self-centered dick in real life.

Chevy Chase, overall brings a lot to the dynamic of the group when he is working on fitting in and being "Popular" .

That being said, Troy and Abed eclipse all the other characters.

GENIUS

So hopefully this ep has allayed your fears of Pierce turning into a complete dick... I assume next episode he'll be back to his old, slightly dickish ways.

No. If anything it makes it worse....

Quote :
"I talked about Pierce's troubling behavior in the D&D episode, and when we got the painkiller addiction story last week, I assumed that was how the series would deal with it: all of Pierce's recent thuggishness would be written off as a result of the pills and he would go back to being the offensive but not malicious character he'd been before. When the Russo brothers spoke about this episode with Vulture's Joe Adalian, they said one of its goals was to help redeem Pierce. If anything, I think the opposite happened. Pierce was even more evil here than he was in the D&D episode, or the trampoline episode, or at pretty much any time in the life of the series. What he did to the group in general and Jeff in particular was pretty unforgivable, and it was done without the aid of pain pills. This was an unclouded Pierce doing this, and if we're supposed to take the emotions of the study group seriously - which this series, and this episode in particular, asks us to do - then this would lead to a permanent shunning.

Even Pierce's explanation for why he did it shouldn't help. It makes sense from Pierce's point of view, because he's so oblivious to his own flaws that he thinks he's been treated unfairly by the others all this time. But this isn't like Jerry on "Parks and Recreation" being unfairly turned into the butt of everyone's jokes and scorn(*). Pierce is treated the way he is because of how he treats others, going all the way back to the pilot. He wasn't originally a bad guy, but he was definitely someone who could be extremely difficult to be around, to the point where it wasn't unreasonable for the others to avoid him and/or joke about him behind his back. Jeff says that Pierce's behavior here doesn't disprove the theory that he's a joke, but it's actually worse. The only way I could see him regaining the others' affection and approval would be if he acted out what's written in Royal Tenenbaum's epitaph - and, of course, he'd be dead at the end of that.

I can't stand those characters, which is probably the reason this show is hit or miss with me. I mean all that one character does is tilt his head sideways like a confused dog and have a blank stare.

Yeah, Donald Glover's stand up special was on Comedy Central on Friday and was pretty good. Not the funniest guy I've seen, but definitely worth watching and it gave me a little more appreciation for his work on Community. I also didn't know until then that he used to write for 30 Rock.

Looking forward to the screencaps of the election coverage, between the fast candidate summaries and the news ticker I'm sure there are plenty of easter eggs.

Still the best show on Thursdays. And that says a lot, considering how much I like the other comedies that night.

This ep had some funny moments, but Jeff's behavior was way out-of-character. I dont' feel like he would have put so much effort into something so petty, or have an angry fit on stage, or sulk on the floor of a utility room. Then, without any prompting, he stops being emo and gracefully admits being at fault.

Also, Britta is becoming a parody of herself. She's become angrier, less intelligent, and more of a pariah. Again, an episode where all her moments are about her being a ridiculous contrarian.

IMO this ep indicates a marked decline in the writing quality all-around. I hope this doesn't become a trend.

Uh... have you not been watching the same show as we have? They've definitely established that Jeff puts way too much effort into petty things after being challenged and then responding angrily: pottery vs. Rich, playing pool in short shorts, etc.

I mean, you could say that the sulking was out of place, but he breaks down in the pottery class as well when thinking about his mother.

She's the same character she's always been. She's always been angry, always been pretty dumb, always ranted about some social injustice, etc. All that's changed is that they're actually responding to it with a "shut up", which is exactly what would happen after spending a year and a half with a person like that.

Jeff and Britta were the normal, "aloof observer" characters at one point Their reaction to the ridiculousness coming from characters like Pierce and Abed is what made them funny. They were Seinfeld's straight man to Cramer's lunatic. Granted, they had their understated quirks, but take away the subtlety and the quirks aren't as funny.

Sure, but how much longer is this going to be funny? It has become predictable.

I still love this show. I just don't like whats happening to those two characters and in this ep there were a lot of moments where I thought "that could have been funnier if they had done it a little differently".

This is called "character growth". You can't have them still be "aloof observers" when they're involved in all the shenanigans.

There have been numerous episodes where they show Jeff's progression from "guy who has to go to Greendale" to "guy who legitimately enjoys being there and with these people".

Next thing you're going to do is bitch that Jeff doesn't try to sleep with Britta every 5 minutes.

This definitely wasn't one of the best episodes they've done (the electioneering stuff felt pretty similar to the territory they covered in the debate episode), but it was still hilarious...it seems like part of the problem is they've set the bar so high that people bitch and moan when an episode isn't flawless.
