Because he was our only senior on the floor. Because, of the people eligible to play, he averages the most points, rebounds, and minutes of any of the players on our team. Because he has the most experience. How many reasons do you want?
I thought the team played pretty well. The first half left something to be desired. But it's a team full of freshmen. They are getting better. What I really like is it's evident the team is playing hard. We just didn't get that all the time with Costner/Fells/Grant etc.

someone (fess up) said we wouldn't score 50+ points in half for the rest of the year: they scored 51
Howell still is a step slow/fat whatever, but he came alive. If vandenburg could move his feet he's gonna be solid, he played pretty well last night against guys who were faster than he was. But you can tell we don't want to throw him the ball on those high screens and UA realized that and Javi/Julius were seemingly always 2x teamed when they got to the top of the key because the big man would never trail Vburg.
It didn't always happen, but during crucial times, there was very little movement by guys without the ball on offense for guys not named Wood, Davis Vburg, or Howell. Horner's body language was bad all game.
As much as losing sucked, we saw glimmers of what could be if these guys can play hard for 40minutes on offense. Defense was a little weak-sauce last night but overall they played pretty well.
As others have mentioned, Javi at times, as good as he was at the end was part of the reason we got into such a big hole. 12/24/2009 10:13:26 AM |

wow. i'm normally the biggest lowe apologist around, but i'm surprised at how calm everyone is on here after some pretty questionable coaching...
did javi have a lot of fouls or something? maybe sidney took him out, b/c of all of his turnovers or something, but imo, he should be playing 35+ minutes a game. and when Mays plays with him (which he shouldn't) then Javi should run point. It's miserable watching nothing Mays handle the ball as he attempts to run the offense.
We need to attack the basket more, with our guards. Javi has shown he's capable of driving and dishing. We should do this more.
Why did Howell disappear to the bench and Painter ever appear? Terrible substitution. Maybe he was hurting/really tired?
If Howell and Vandenburg played more, and Horner played less, we would have won. If our freshmen improve over time as much as Smith, and not like Horner.... loook out! 12/24/2009 10:33:56 AM |

you're an idiot
he's playing with a sore hamstring and at one point late in the game he came down after driving to the basket and you could tell he was in a bit of pain
it's tough for anyone to play 35 mpg, let alone someone with a fucked up leg
Quote : | "We need to attack the basket more, with our guards. Javi has shown he's capable of driving and dishing. We should do this more." |
that is only effective when you have someone really quick or good outside shooters and we have neither (all of our have been pretty inconsistent thus far), otherwise the defense will just collapse to the interior instead like they do now of sticking to their man on the perimeter
Quote : | "Why did Howell disappear to the bench and Painter ever appear? Terrible substitution. Maybe he was hurting/really tired?" |
maybe it's because he is out of shape/coming off of an injury?

this gets said every single season, the glimmers are never more than that because they never gain enough consistency
I'm just going to leave it open ended, how do players become motivated to play with energy and passion for an entire basketball game? lazy passes, clumsy hands, unforced turnovers are the only thing that is inexcusable because that is just a lack of effort. If they miss open looks, whatever, they aren't skilled but basic fundamentals should be beyond solid by the college level
Of course motivation is some part internal, Javi is a good example of that, but no small part lies on the coaching staff to keep these boys focused and on point. 'Glimmers' show that the players have that potential in them, but they can never get rhythm and confidence and some of that blame lies in forcing set plays and substitutions that break any kind of flow and cohesion12/24/2009 12:16:24 PM |

i'm still amazed at how people were expecting us to roll in this game with THESE things against us:
1. Road Game 2. Missing our best player(who is averaging a double-double practically) 3. At the 3, 4 and 5 spots we were playing with 5 true freshmen and 1 senior.
Of course, there are things that happened in the game that shouldn't...silly turnovers, etc. But for this team to have fought back like they did, and play like the did in the 2nd half, with the youth that we have....im proud of them. 12/24/2009 1:37:44 PM |

the committee will consider the fact that smith didn't play in this game and we still almost won save an amazing coast to coast drive by a guy that should be in the nba. If we beat florida, we still have a very reasonable shot at an at large bid. 12/24/2009 1:57:25 PM |

michigan state is overrated as hell. florida aint great but will finish in the top 10 because kentucky and ole miss are the only sec teams capable of beating them so its a great opportunity...
by reasonable i mean .500 in the acc. if we don't don't beat duke and unc we could still sweep a few other teams. Auburn might finish in the top 25 so all we would need is one more top 25 wn in the acc or maybe marquette to have a surprise season for us to have a good resume without beating duke and unc. then of course we have to win probably 2 games in the tournament.
Quote : | "seriously, why can't you all see that you make the same excuses year after year." |
look back on the last 3 seasons. this is BY FAR the best we've been at this point since herb was here and a huge improvement from last year when we had an experienced lineup. The way the team plays, unless harrow and brown are worse than javi and horner, we will continue to significantly improve over the next few seasons.
had we completely sucked this year like we were supposed to (or if we tank in acc play) then I will have doubt for the future but as long as we continue to compete, I'll feel good.
Arizona almost beat wisconsin straight up and we hung with them without our best player. Not only is smith our best player, but the entire offense runs through him. This is like if the heat almost beat a middle of the road nba team without d wade.

Were you watching the game? Did you not see how poorly he was doing? I'm sorry but you just don't keep going back to a guy in crunch time that has been failing repeatedly in the midst of a ridiculous off-game. We seriously fed him the ball about five times in a row with under three minutes and he shat himself and gave AZ the ball gift wrapped with absurd turnovers and horrid shots each time. Meanwhile Javi was busy making four point plays and sitting on the bench until it was REALLY crunch time.
