Good to know for the manuals. I was mainly curious because I've heard several times that the automatics overheat on the track even at stock power levels. Of course I would imagine most people that would take theirs to the track wouldn't order it auto

So only:single turbo "kit", intercooler,METH injectiontuningintakeclutchmade 644rwhp. That's a lot of power, but then you've got meth injection with a bunch of extra parts running insane boost w/a huge turbo. I guess I'm not as impressed. RE: Track worthyness, they go into limp mode with nothing more than a chip b/c of overheating. They also have inadequate brakes even at stock power levels, so yeah. Pretty good street cars (though I find the "hand me my seatbelt" crap annoying on the coupes).
5/18/2012 11:07:28 AM
^haha the little arms pushing up the seatbelts surprised me when I got one as a loaner.

If we're talking current (just released) 3 series, I have no first hand experience. That said, very few street cars have brakes adequate for extended track use from the factory, so I wouldn't hold that against the piggy.

The brakes in the ///M are surprisingly good. A large improvement over the previous generation.

S2000 is probably the only "mass produced", non ricer (and not Porsche) car to come w/decent brakes from the factory. Xcellent point from mr. S60R. Those brakes were rather ///M-azing. As for the /// having great brakes... Brembo M3 brake upgrade kit vs. 90s Porsche (far lighter, and less power) vs. current Porsche:[Edited on May 18, 2012 at 2:37 PM. Reason : S60R Woot!]

Guess I'm a bit naive then! I always figured the autobahn stormers would do just fine with maybe a pad swap.
5/18/2012 3:00:39 PM
Most of them will do OK w/a pad and some fluid for a little while sure. I mean they're obviously in another league compared to an Infinity or Acura or something but they're not up for sustained track use, but again not much is. It's all relative...

I would not be easily impressed by something running meth. People have made insane amounts of power using stock internals on all sorts of cars. Remember the Dodge Caravan turbo, pretty sure it ran 11s w/stock internals, I don't care. Somebody made over 500hp out of an S52 that was internally stock. All it had was a bunch of fuel, a giant turbo, intercooler, etc. What would impress me is if it made somewhere around 450hp w/JUST a tune. For comparison I made 310ft-lbs AT THE WHEELS in a Porsche 944 turbo with nothing more than some washers for the waste gate, a home made boost controller, cat delete (nothing fancy, shop in Garner for $50) and a $300 chip. In a car that originally made 240ft-lbs crank. Similarly I'm drawn to the 996 turbo that almost touches 500hp completely stock except for a tune. Brakes: I actually don't think BMW brakes feel all that bad and they're not that bad really but they're also not "motorsports" worthy, unlike the engine and most of the rest of the car(s). Moot point really, as BMW is selling stupid crap like convertible M6 automatics and X6M, etc. Of modern BMWs there are only 2 I am interested in; e90 M3, M1. Nothing else they've made recently interests me and like I said IMO they're going downhill, fast (with inadequate brakes!) Now I'm not saying BMWs are worthless, they still make fantastic cars. Cars that I don't find interesting enough to drive, that's all.

Never thought I would see the day when someone continually defends modded BMWs based on their quarter mile times
5/20/2012 10:43:04 PM
CONFIRMED: New M3 will have I6 with twin or triple turbo, producing around 450 hp. (I6 is the confirmed bit)And ^^ will be called the M4 (and new 1-series coupe will be 2-series)
5/22/2012 12:08:46 PM
This new naming convention for BMW's coupes is another gay move in a recent long string of gay naming convention moves.
5/22/2012 2:02:59 PM
I wonder if they have forever axed the sedan for the M3, or if they'll bring it back when they super charge the twin tubro I6.
5/22/2012 2:25:15 PM
sedan should be there (M3) and coupe will be the M4.
5/22/2012 3:12:59 PM
Pretty stupid, considering the first M3 was coupe only.
5/22/2012 3:33:40 PM
Was that really a coupe though or just a 2 door sedan ??Bahahahahahaha! Lol cause you know we have 4 door coupes now so... 2door sedan??
5/22/2012 11:01:36 PM
Not as cool as the i-series, but much cheaper, and you get to keep your 3-series looks: factory 500HP electric conversion kits from BMW
5/22/2012 11:41:39 PM
Electricity : A motor rated at 500hp will not make 500hp unless fed the power to do so.My guess is it's lacking in voltage/amperage to produce its maximum capacity.
5/23/2012 7:38:14 AM
^^i can only imagine how much the handling will suffer.
5/23/2012 8:05:33 AM
yeah i thought the same thing but maybe they were intelligent with battery placement and it isn't that bad.... but probably not they probably just stuffed batteries wherever they had room and it will handle like a nose-heavy pig.
5/23/2012 8:09:02 AM
pretty cool idea, considering you could get a full electric car for 25-30k?But what happens when you need to get some service done?

Bought a 1990 E30 325i convertible yesterday, so I guess I've joined the BMW club. Needs some work before its a daily driver . . . . overheats. Might be something simple, might need a head gasket (which doesn't look too bad on this engine). Runs and drives beautifully though while its cool.
6/4/2012 6:51:40 PM
flogged the shit out of mine on the way home and realized it is time for tires. i would recommend the nitto 555's to anyone. i will run them again.

i think i have michielin mxm4's on my 330ci? something like that. they do extremely well for daily driving in stormy ass charleston. driven through tropical storms and severe thunderstorms without losing grip on the road at higher speeds.]
6/5/2012 11:02:13 PM
MXV4 is a pretty decent street tire for people that are sane. Michelin makes tires that nail compromises, they just cost more. If you can afford them, they make really good high perf. tires also like the Pilot Sport, Pilot Sport Cup and the Pilot Super Sport.
6/5/2012 11:26:56 PM
^^^ Disagree, I think that Nitto NT-05 is at least right there with them. Also, I've had multiple sets of both (but not on the same car).
6/6/2012 12:20:55 AM
I was considering one of those high performance ones a bit but wasn't really feeling the 4 hundred per tire I was quoted
