don't hate 'til you've seen 'em live, vb

they're great musicians, especially Jim James

i used to not care about them at all, but since seeing them, i've become a pretty big fan (mostly just because how impressive they were live allowed me the receptiveness to listen to their first three albums a little more closely; still not a huge fan of Z)

they had a pretty good run with at dawn, it still moves and z. and they are definitely one of the best live bands i've seen. i didn't really enjoy their show at koka booth last year that much because the sound sucks there, but that's not the band's fault. 3 years later i'm still convinced i will never witness another show as spectacular as the one they put on at bonnaroo in 2008. that was fucking unreal.

"^Haven't listened to it yet, but just finished watching that DBTs documentary The Secret to A Happy Ending. Fucking phenomenal. If you're already a fan, it'll make you an even bigger fan; if you're not a fan, it'll at least give you some respect for them. They really are the real deal. And it'll make you seriously reconsider preconceptions you might have about southern rock.

There's this one part where some professor is talking about the Mike Cooley-penned song "Uncle Frank," which is largely about the TVA and how they displaced the homes of many farmers and the ilk by taking more and more land; he points out that he had a graduate student who spent two years working on a thesis about the TVA, and Cooley does a much better job of describing its effects in three and a half minutes.
"

I just got the doc this week so i plan to watch it this weekend hopefully. I absolutely love this band. I don't think i'll make it to their show at Hopscotch but they are playing back to back nights in June at the Orange Peel in Asheville and if I miss those I will probably off myself.

^^ yeh, the live performance last night started rocky (problems with the sound mix) but quickly became awesome. the female guitarist was ripping up some awesome extended solos, particularly on 'show yourself'. i was so impressed by the performance last night that i decided to buy a ticket to see them with titus andronicus and future islands in atlanta. they're also playing at the cat's cradle, but atlanta is closer to my current location

^ love the instrumentation and song arrangements, not crazy about the vocals on that new antlers record (too melodramatic and theatrical for my ears). i recognize that it's a personal preference thing, though, and overall the album sounds great

I saw Tame Impala and Yuck the other night. I can't help but feel disappointed with Tame Impala. They were really sloppy and just seemed like a younger band that i had pictured in my head. They also played slower than the CD which is super frustrating to me.

Yuck was pretty good, though.

not sure how i feel about the new MMJ yet. i think i like "slow slow tune" and "movin away," but there are some real stinkers between "hangin on to black metal" and "outta my system." somehow "you wanna freak out" got cut short. anyone else have this problem if you got it from what.cd?

Krallice - Diotima was streaming last and probably better than this, all though whatever Liturgy track starts around 10:30 is badass. They're playing at hopscotch for the 3 people on this forum who are into black metal, although you probably wouldn't like these guys they are definitely hipster black metal, even moreso than krallice

I'm AstralAdvent and i approved this message.

since this thread is checked by music lovers, i didn't want to create a whole new thread

does kickstarter.com look like a good or bad way to go about creating an album independently? on one hand it seems like groveling to say "i won't release new music unless you pay me x,xxx to do so beforehand...and also each stage requires more funding" but on the other hand i'm broke as shit and was thinking about just putting up several raw tracks that ive recorded and just seeing what happens. i'm more curious than anything...

Making music is incredibly cheap these days (relatively speaking). Putting out records is not. Think of Kickstarter as a record company you run yourself but is financed from outside; when you finish a record and need to put it out, Kickstarter can be a good way to get the funds to have records pressed and sleeves printed, just like hunting for a label is a good way to get the physical media put out into the world.

I wouldn't use it to try and get funds to buy a laptop and Logic, though...mostly because if you don't have those things you don't have enough fans to fund your stuff anyway, and Kickstarter is most definitely an avenue for artists who already have fans. I'll buy a record by someone I don't know if it's on a label I trust or has been recommended by someone whose opinion I value, but I'm not paying up front for something by an artist I have literally zero familiarity with.

thanks for the quick reply. yeah i was wondering if i put up like 20 min worth of live demo if that would be enough to entice into giving to someone who you weren't familiar with at all. i have an mxl mic, several native instrument programs, audacity, and my casio keyboard so i'm not hard up for equipment (at least for my purposes). about the only thing i would say is that if i went $1,000 over my goal i would preorder a misa digital kitar with a quickness.

i just can't think of what i could do for the various gift levels...personalized songs (not on the final album)? lol at what point are you just coming off as desperate?

edit: i should mention i'm in law school and i'm married so my free time is VERY valuable to me. i'm not going to go chasing my childhood rockstar dreams and drop everything else i'm working on on the off chance (read: super mega unlikely) i develop some fans. i'd rather give it away and have people donate what they want if they like it and if not, well it was free and i was going to record it anyway.

^^ If you have the means to record and aren't really looking to make money, why are you considering asking for some? You need Bandcamp, not Kickstarter.

bandcamp is kind of like itunes only they just take 10% of your sales instead of 30%, and you can stream your entire album and set your own prices for songs and albums. they also don't tell you what you can and can't do with album art and song length, and they won't fuck up your track order either

The first song on the Gang Gang Dance album is really cool, in my opinion. There are some others on the album I'm not really digging right now, but could see myself getting into as I listen more.

So, for instance, this got a "best of" on Pitchfork, and I'm wondering in such instances, ...how many go-rounds do these reviewers listen to an album? Guess it all depends...

Anyway, Pitchfork is awesome, in my opinion, because they're not afraid to completely pan albums. It's basically a breath of fresh air and total distinction from promoters disguised as critics. And that's highly important with Indy music and the infinite number of bands releasing things these days. However, if anybody wants to point me in a more reliable (in opinion) review site that is ALSO not afraid to pan and dog, I'm down.

I was recently involved in a discussion with a "blog bro" who essentially claimed that said [collective] blog (and it's a well-known one) won't write about anything they don't see fit to write about, and leaves the negative reviewing up to "sites like Pitchfork." I can sort of appreciate the negative reviews because I can't always assume that if a blog refuses to review something then it's shit.

Anyway, first track, Gang Gang Dance...I like it. And trying to get into the others...
