Glancing back over my tentative schedule, I was stoked to realize that I won't have to set foot in White Collar Crime or The Hive

I'm gonna have a great time, but this year's lineup pales in comparison to last year's. A large part of this is that I've already seen most of the bands that I want to see this year, whereas last year was night after night of bands I hadn't had a chance to see before. There's not a single band this year where I thought "Holy SHIT, I can't believe I get to see THEM!!!" I'm gonna have a rad time, but it's not going to knock me on my ass the way it did last year.

Last year they lost money. Go figure.

Anyway, he's just trying to troll me, I think. Ever since I started the incessant bitching about Ashley Christensen (deservedly), and tommy wiseau called me 'insufferable', it's become the new thing.

Whatever...

last year they paid Public Enemy approximately $75k

that is why they lost money; i agree that, overall, the under-card of the line up was better and i was a bit more excited for many of the same reasons spookyjon listed.

the main stage shows are better than last year based on The Flaming Lips and Dodo's alone, for me personally, even though I've seen each before. (and, of course, GBV). I wasn't a big fan of No Age or Broken Social Scene before or after last years show.

Wow, what a godaweful waste of money. They could've used that to bring in 10-20 good regional bands...would've been nice to see some of that money put to use for this year's undercard.

If I wanted some irrelevant, washed up rappers, I would sit on the couch and watch flavor of love re-runs on Vh1

^^^ and then they had a show in Charlotte maybe 2 or 3 months later where they only had like 50 guarantees, LOL

but, as i understood it, for whatever reason the signing of Public Enemy helped them land some other acts and got the ball rolling. (and, iirc, Panda Bear was one of those... but,not sure about that either, b/c Panda Bear played a show in Portland the Sunday after Hopscotch and it was one of only a couple of shows he played in the US last summer, and it could have had more to do with the timing.)

Panda Bear played in Governor's Island, NY the day after Hopscotch.

I even have a recording of it...like everybody else that bought Tomboy.

^ yeah, it may have been Portland the day before or 2 before.

i know he only played like 4 or 5 places that entire month, and that was a pretty big get for the festival.

Panda Bear was a bit of a disappointment for me last year, and another reason why I know/think the main stage shows will be better this year. Loved Person Pitch, but was not impressed by that show.... at all.

I need some advice from people in the know.

I have a lot of friend who were fucking retards in the many months I nagged them to get tickets, and obviously don't have any now. I'm wondering if anyone knows where to pickup last-minute stuff from people trying to get rid of it, aside from craigslist.

ALSO, vinylbandit and others need to confirm something for me. A WKNC DJ told me that certain shows will be selling regular admission tickets even though it's a Hopscotch event because of predicted attendance or something like that, especially 21+ shows. Can anyone confirm this? If this is the case I might pull some non-ticket friends with me to some shows.

Ended up hanging around Kings after lower dens to see what Grandchildren was all about.

Holy shit those guys were great. Hadn't listened to or even heard of them to be honest, but they absolutely killed it. They had several multi-instrumentalists; dude started on the bass, then hopped to keys / vocoder, then to percussion, trombone and finished out on the kit....all done seamlessly and didn't feel like a performance gimmick.

Ready for noon to roll around, so I can gtfo of the office and back downtown.

i'm not sure HOW i'm awake.

i'm still so god damn pissed about not getting into dinosaur feathers WITH A FUCKING VIP WRIST BAND.

let's see:

1. didn't see Dinosaur Feathers

2. the room they booked for the party was so small, it was eventually one in one out

3. they ran out of liquor (of vodka) an hour into aforementioned vip party, beer shortly thereafter (as i understand, but i had already left by then)

exactly what the fuck did i pay for?

i could have had the all shows pass and saw everything i did last night, because they apparently over-sold, or at minimum mishandled, the vip shit so much i still had to get there early.

i don't know if i'm going vip next year if it's going to be like this. such a tremendous step back from the vip passes of last year in terms of how the doors were handled and the pre-festival perks.

/first world problems rant complete
