Yeah I thought the car looked pretty good too. I can see why he debadged it. I've always liked the styling of the Optima, but the Kia badge doesn't help things. I also like whatever black wheels he put on there.
I'm assuming that's the SX Turbo (274 hp), because it appeared to be pretty damn quick too. Maybe he's done some work to it? ] 4/25/2013 10:18:04 AM |

so is turbo the new future of pro mod?
blown alcohol was already killing large displacement gasoline nitrous, is turbo killing off both?
i havent kept up with it for years. what fuel and displacement are turbos allowed? im assuming there are turbo size limitations and/or boost restrictions?
Quote : | "The turbocharger combination will have a reduction in minimum weight from 2,700 to 2,650 pounds. Turbocharged cars will also be allowed to run any manufacturer’s turbocharger as long as it is no larger than 88mm and it meets SFI Spec 61.1. In addition, intercoolers will now be prohibited. To control the boost of these turbochargers, all cars must be outfitted with an NHRA specified boost controller. The maximum boost level setting will be controlled by NHRA officials.
Additionally the nitrous combination will now be allowed to use water injection while the supercharged cars will have no rule changes associated with parity." |
[Edited on April 30, 2013 at 2:30 PM. Reason : nvm]
Looks like turbo cars are limited to the same cubic inches (526) and weight limits as the supercharged cars now. Having no intercoolers this year should make things interesting. Couldnt find the fuel they have to use, but I was always partial to the nitrous cars myself.
The lowest weight allowed by 200 pounds, no cubic inch limit, and now they get water injection too
Not surprisingly both camps now hate the turbo guys instead of each other. Pro Mod controversy is always fun.

It sucks that turbos are so heavily regulated IMHO.
I mean they allow you to start soft and really hammer in the boost down track. I wouldn't be surprised if they just made a pro turbo class at some point.
Hp in a bottle to me is just cheap. Hold on guys let me go but some more horse power... Hope the car doesn't blow up.
Supercharger a were always my favorites growing up and since they went to screw guts instead of roots they have gained some efficiency but still.. 500-600 hp loss in the blower is like free hp for the turbo guys. They lose maybe 100 due to the exhaust restriction but still that's nothing. 5/1/2013 7:37:29 AM |

I saw the pro mods at ZMAX a few weeks ago. That twin turbo car just takes off after 300 feet.
IMO NOS = Cheap Street Racer. Go to any local track and all you see is poorly built cars running on bottle.
I have a cousin that has a s10 that runs low 5's high 4's in the eight if it doesn't blow up. Thing is a pig without the bottle.

you're talking about a 1000 hp + car assuming it has huge slicks and launches like a bat outta hell with no wheel spin and weights in the low 2000lb area (that's for a 4.999999)... realistically you're talking about a 1500hp car that would take a pro to setup worth a crap.
i don't care who you are... a poorly built engine imho makes 500hp tops... so you're talking about 2 500 kits or something.... which again... a poorly built motor won't handle even once down the track...
i'm sorry sir but i'm going to have to raise the bs flag.
doesn't mean i don't like your ambition i just don't think the engine is not that poorly built or i believe this is a fabricated or embellished story.
just a heads up...
these cars cost on average 100k to build (the first time not to keep it running through a season) 5/3/2013 8:43:12 AM |

^^ Such a hater! The 4AGE is a pretty reliable engine. It's a really simple car with the biggest enemy being rust. It's light weight and RWD. I've always been a fan of MR2's (initially MkII, but recently I've converted over to the Mk I), but have been discouraged from owning one because of their used market pricing many years ago. I've noticed that there have been a few really good deals lately, 2 of which slipped through my fingers recently. Non-interference engines are always a nice piece of mind... I don't need a beast to have fun. There's a lot of 80's nostalgia with an AW11 and as I look more into them, I like them more. You don't see many clean examples on the road, which is something that I like.
I really want something like a go-cart; a few weeks ago I posted a Miata. It's more fun to drive a slow car fast on the roads than it is a fast car slow. My current situation doesn't allow me to work on full on project cars like I did before, but I still have resources to maintain a running vehicle.
There's a huge niche missing from our current car market; true light weight compact sports cars. The Miata and BRZ/FRS are close. The S2000 is still a good option, but I want something extremely light and for that, I need to look to the 80's and 90's.

As the owner of a BRZ I'm gonna argue it's not (though maybe it would be if the engine didn't sound so shitty and didn't have a torque dip the size of the grand canyon from 3000-4000 rpm)

Well unfortunately you can blame the government for that. Safety regulations these days are utterly insane and it will never stop. The FRS/BRZ is the best I think you'll ever get again (as far as a coupe goes) and the next gen Miata should be back around 2200-2300lbs.5/22/2013 2:35:43 PM |
