Quote : | "So, are you expected to tip the dealer ON TOP of the rake? Because the rake is generally used to pay their wages. When Jamie Gold left a HUGE tip for the dealers, he was told not to because they were paid so nicely.
Are players at the cheapy tables expected to tip dealers often too?" |
This is very incorrect.
the rake has nothing to do with the dealers. and yes, youd tip on top of the rake. the rake goes to pay casino commission taxes, to the house, etc.. thats the take. poker dealers are paid much much much lower than say blackjack dealers. think of it morel ike a waitress, low low rates, rely on tips.
for tournaments, the rake does go partially to the dealers. it is customary to leave a percentage of the prize pool to the dealers also however, seeing as how the dealers that run in tournaments arent making tips, they are paid a flat rate, usually much much lower than their regular rate from cash game tables. i mean, its not bad earnings, but probably like $8/hr or so.
but, the WSOP dealers are paid nicely. they are recruited b/c they are some of the best at what they do. hence, paid higher. however, it is still customary.
you play 2/4 or a $50 taj tournament, it aint the same.10/27/2006 2:19:52 PM |

The first time I ever went to a real life casino was a disaster. The first night I played for a couple hours and ended up winning like $100 in no-limit. The next day, I finished in the middle of the pack in a fairly large tournament when my AQ lost to AK. I was fairly devastated, because up unitl that point I had only played very small tournaments (10ish people) and it was very rare for me not to at least place.
Anyways, I figured I'd try my luck at limit, which was stoopid considering I never ever played limit before. Looking back, I wasn't all that good at no-limit at the time, but given the choice between the 2, I definitely had a much better shot at no-limit. Well, I sat down at the table, and of course had to have the betting structure explained to me. I played $1/2 for a bit, but then got bored after pretty much breaking even for a few hours, so I decided $3/6 was a better fit. To anyone who has not played $3/6 before, lemme tell you, you can lose a significant amount of money in a short amount of time.
So about 2 hours in, I was down about $250, angry and befuddled about how KK could be beaten by J7 and how my trips could be beaten by a runner runner flush on a rainbow flop with no draws. I still don't know how people win at limit. What I do know is that there is a fine line between stupidity and solid play on limit tables, and I am about as far away from that line as one can get.
I have noticed that Asian women love to frequent limit tables, and this particular table that I was loosing my ass at had one particularly annoying Asian woman at it (the older ones all seem annoying, no racism intended). She was one of those many people who liked to play any 2 cards, and she always had something to say about the hand, even while it was going on. In one hand there was a raise in front of me, I had JJ and reraised, and she looked in disgust and folded. Eventually when it got down to the action, the flop was something like 722 or 772..... either way she had been dealt 72 and was livid that I raised, going on and on (this after I was still shellshocked after losing $250 for the first time ever). I looked at her and said "You stupid bitch, that's why people raise, so morons like you don't get to play 72, and if you so feel the need, it will be expensive." For the moment, this shut her up. I don't know what the rest of the table thought. Maybe they were thinking the same thing as me, but I doubt it. Limit tables seemed to inevitably filled with idiots who just want to play every single flop, so I imagine they sympathized with the woman.
So like an hour or so later, she was back at it with her non-stop ramblings. I FINALLY won a sizable hand (maybe $100ish dollars) after I had flopped trip 4's and had hit the boat on the river. I don't know/care whether there was even a straight on the board that I outdrew, all I know is that I won the hand. Well after 3 hours of losing (I was down about $300 by now and on my last $100) I was in no mood for tipping. However, this Asian woman felt it necessary to grab 2 of my $1 chips as I was raking in my winnings and hold them up, saying, "You need to give this to dealer cause you win hand." I was in no mood for her, and I get VERY pissed when somone touches my chips. I grabbed them from her hand and told her, "Leave my chips alone, and another thing, I PROMISE that if you shut the fuck up for just 15 minutes, I will give the dealer half of anything I have left when I leave this table." Once again, shock and disbelief from the table. The dealer cautioned me (again haha) for saying fuck, and he warned her not to touch my chips. Needless to say, I only played there another hour or so, but from that point on, the woman was silent. I did keep up my end of the bargain too, as I left the table with exactly $0, to which I gladly gave the dealer half. 10/27/2006 8:15:31 PM |

i used to railbird a lot when i first started out. twin caracas was always cleaning the 10/20 tables (highest stakes at the time.) he'll play any suited hand. pair with flush draw on flop, he'll check raise all in. hallinggol is a grinder though. best nlhe ring/hu player on ps.

I busted a guys aces with suited connectors this weekend. he took off his wedding ring and held it up to my face. i later found out that he was attempting to make some lame insult insinuating that i resembled frodo from the lord of the rings.
later that night i was playing at another table, and another guy said i looked like frodo, then the whole table agreed.
then at a craps table later while i was shooting a guy at the other end aske for some hobbit luck.
no one has ever said this to me before, and im quite disturbed. Esp. seeng as to how it came up 3 times in 12 hours.
time for a new hair style i guess.

just an idea, throwing it out there.
Would anyone be interested in a poker book read through and group discussion?
set up a schedule of readings and then use this thread for a forum for ideas and concepts?
I need to reread SSHE soon and was thinking about this. Even though it's a limit book, I think there are plenty of keys that would help everyone here. 10/30/2006 1:30:34 PM |
